Pool Aid fighting against McCarren Pool name change
Patrick Henry McCarren

To: New York City Parks DepartmentWe do not support the Parks Department's plan to sell the naming rights to McCarren Pool. Our pool was built and paid for by the taxpayers, not by a corporation. Patrick Henry McCarren is an important figure in local history, who helped build the Williamsburg Bridge and establish local parks. Both McCarren Pool and McCarren Park, named in his honor, should retain their historical names. We demand that the Parks Department take our landmark off the for-sale list.
Sincerely,
---

As long as they don't change it to Obama Pool, I could care less.
A Walmart Pool full of water is better than a McCarren pool full of weeds.

Yeah, a Senator who took bribes from Standard Oil while in office deserves to be honored.

There is much truth in the statement, "The bridges, the parks, the improved means of transit, the better paved and lighted streets...by which the Brooklyn of to-day is distinguished....are due more to the legislative efficiency of Senator McCarren than to the influence of any other individual."
Of course, he did so frequently on behalf of the Eastern District's big industries, becoming a political marionette for both oil and sugar. He was publicly charged with actually being on the payroll of Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company. According to one account, "No denial of the charge was ever made by the Senator." One paper even referred to him as "the Standard Oil serpent of Brooklyn politics."

People shouldn't have to plug a company to tell anyone where they are going.
Posted by Kurt C. | June 29, 2009 3:48 PM
People don't have to.
I for one think the whole thing should go back to being called Greenpoint Park. You burgers have been getting far too comfortable.

"Anon 3:21 Corporate Sellout Pool" is the correct term. You probably love major labels.

3:29 - I think you mean "Spanish-speaking" people, not the Spanish themselves. Phrases like "Hispanic" or the one that the younger crowd likes, "Latino", refer to Spanish speakers and/or descendents of the Spanish in the Western Hemisphere. "Spanish" itself refers to Spaniards, or those from the country of Spain.
Of course, I'm fine with "Spics" should you use that one.
Posted by Grammar, see? | June 29, 2009 5:27 PM
Actually, 5:27, most Latinos, especially caribbean Latinos, say "Spanish" to mean any Latino. Only white people don't know this- which is weird, because it's something you figure out quickly when you live in Brooklyn.

dude,
That's because Carribean Latinos, especially ones in New York, are wrong.

i don't realize what the crime in corporate sponsorship is
Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2009 7:40 PM
7:40, if you read the story and knew the facts, you would know that it is not a knee-jerk reaction to corporate sponsorship. In fact, this is not sponsorship at all. McCarren Pool is 100% paid for by taxpayers--both its original construction and its renovation and reopening. All paid for! Selling the naming rights would contribute nothing to the pool. In fact the money wouldn't even go to this neighborhood.
If some corporation wants to give $3 million to build a new park in North Brooklyn, or maybe a bike path along the water, we're all for it! A little place where people could kayak would be nice. But the pool already has a name, and pool is already paid for.
Thanks for posting this Brooklyn Vegan, we aren't embarrassed to care about something.
