Shilpa Ray and her Happy Hookers

You may have randomly come upon a band or two playing on the streets of Williambsburg this past long Northside Festival weekend. On Thursday, Pow Wow! was one of those bands. On Friday, many people on their way to the BrooklynVegan showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg passed by a street performance by Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers. Those are the pictures in this post.

Shilpa also played a more official show (with Pow Wow!) at Spike Hill later that night, and as usual, there are plenty of chances to catch her and her band in the near future. Options include this weekend's Olive Juice Music Festival, a show at the Stone later in June, a gig at Southpaw on July 1st, the Heavy Trash/Those Darlins show at Mercury Lounge on July 9th, Citysol a couple of days after that, and then the Sly Stone tribute at Castle Clinton not long after that. All dates and more street shots, below....

I didn't realize they have a filmmaker in the band.

Is there any reason she gets so much coverage on the site, other than the fact that she has the same manager as A place to bury strangers?

Seem to be cut/pasting the press releases on a lot of these

those hookers don't look so happy...

Posted by Anonymous | June 15, 2009 1:04 PM

What about the fact that they are awesome? Doesn't awesomeness deserve coverage?

She needs to wear a hat..seriously

Posted by Anonymous | June 15, 2009 1:32 PM

does awesomeness deserve coverage? sure.
does coverage result by virtue of sheer awesomeness and sheer awesomeness alone? nope.

"Seem to be cut/pasting the press releases on a lot of these"

not true

"Is there any reason she gets so much coverage on the site, other than the fact that she has the same manager as A place to bury strangers?"

The more I think about it, what does that even mean??? Yes, we decide what bands we cover on whether they share a manager with A Place to Bury Strangers...

Shilpa was terrific at the Acoustic BBQ yesterday. It was he first time I'd seen her perform.

She's clearly talented and it's an interesting sound, kind of mixing cabaret elements with a PJ Harvey kind of intensity.

Why so much groundless shit talking goes down in the comments section of this website I'll never understand. 99% of the time the haters are clearly fools with an axe to grind. It's a sad combo of out-of-the-loop teenagers and burnt out music industry hacks battling to bring down whoever they're jealous of.

Anyway... lay off, losers!

whoa!
brooklyn vegan commenters get told off by BV and Todd P themselves.

Ultimate indie rock zing?

i like to think a lot of the nastiness of the comments would vanish if Anonymous comments were removed because the extra step of logging in would remove the incentive to just instinctively shit on everything.

but then i think about gothamist's comments.

so whcih one are you todd?
burnt out music industry hack
or
out-of-the-loop promoters trying to make a fast buck with the shit talent you leach on to?

all of the above

I don't know 3:44, but I know which one you are...

burnt out industry hater, front and center

i have a boner.

Shilpa's terrific live. She deserves multiple postings here and elsewhere. A rousing, reckless performer who clearly busts ass to bring people her music.

The sniping on NYC boards is hilarious. Here, Gothamist, you name it. It's easy for cowards to complain. Few speak up unless it's to gripe.

Comment boards attract flies.

she busts ass?

shilpa's awesome. saw her at the beach show and I'll deff be going out to see her again

Posted by Anonymous | June 15, 2009 10:23 PM

Best performers on the beach. Somehow even LOUDER than the other performers, acoustically! People dancing or just dumbfounded and silent. People got an agenda, I don't give a shit, if you were there, you couldn't deny they owned it.

The only reason I just spent time reading all these comments is because I'm on the mega-bus, which has free internet! That chick ruled last night at Mercury Lounge. In fact, everyone but that crappy Trash whatever wannabe Elvis Band was amazing. And I'm neither a know-it-all teenager or a industry loser, or I may have mixed that up. The point is, I don't give a rat's ass about any of y'all's shenanigans. I'm a girl who likes music and I like that girl.

:-) Bye Bye

I was at the show last night and can confirm - she does bust ass!

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:00 PM

Honestly speaking, busty and ass could not be more defined than shilpa ray. :)
