The rain held off for Todd P's Unamplified Acoustic BBQ at Fort Tilden Beach on Sunday, June 14th. At the show, a sizable crowd congregated along the dunes where acts from the day's lineup played on acoustic guitars, hand percussion and various other things (xylophone, a small boombox, etc).
Park rangers watched from the hills behind, and only intervened, as far as I could tell, when people walked onto the dunes or into the water.
On the beach, the temperature was at least 10 degrees cooler, with a strong wind that carried away a lot of the sound. I caught a couple acoustic acts, and Puttin on the Ritz' B.J. Rubin, who told a story about going to Monterrey with Todd. White Diamonds decided to spin the unamplified theme, opting for a performance-art set that featured an iPod hooked to a stereo. The band clanked on bells, hit a drum and threw clumps of sand in the air. Even with a bit of sand in their hair, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.
It looks like the group moved toward the water later in the day to gather more closely around the bands (via Dumbo Books of Brooklyn)...
The bands started moving down to the water as the day waned. As far as we could hear, nobody introduced anyone, and when bands alternated, they sometimes passed on their instruments.More pictures below (though only of a very short part of it)...We noticed what we think was Todd P talking to the park rangers back by the rise where the beach begins (or ends). On our way out via the concrete path, we asked the park rangers if we could take their photos. No dice, not even for an alter kocker wearing a blue Rockaway Beach Surf Shop t-shirt. But the rangers, who tolerated the nude beach back in our day at least, said they enjoyed the day and had no trouble.

the rangers were only there for about a 5th of the day. they were not really a big part of the day.
wish you could show photos that don't imply it was some tense shut down situation...
it was actually a really beautiful day in the sun with minimal attention from the authorities, who were only really there to keep people off the dunes anyway.

anyone hating here looks pretty ridiculous. it was great. free music on a beautiful beach and you have a problem with that?
hater, you need to rethink your life.
who's mad at a sunny day at the ocean?
Posted by Anonymous | June 16, 2009 12:35 PM

Posted by Anonymous | June 16, 2009 12:39 PM
Horrible pictures. Truly horrible. Too high contrast. Too many pictures of nothing. Doesn't capture anything of the beautiful day at the beach.

flickr, google blog search, they're all there

Really great day. EXCEPT for those White Diamonds assholes. What a bunch of self-centered fucktards on acid. Lots of photos of the chick crucifying herself and shouting during other peoples' quiet sets are online. Yeah we all really enjoyed having sand in our faces, too. Really great way to embrace the stereotypes of us all being dicks with full enthusiasm, guys.
Everyone else was pretty much great, though. Thanks so much to Todd. Aa, Necking, Shilpa Ray were tops. So beautiful out there. Party bus/train caravans. People were good about picking up their trash, the rangers were pretty chill, good community feeling, lots of us went to the Wharf bar in Rockaway Park after.
This is a really nice review that captured the day pretty well:

glad i didn't go, haven't seen one girl that looks like she'd be worth having sex with
Posted by Anonymous | June 16, 2009 3:34 PM
^^^3:34 - you mean one girl you would not want to "sexually assault". It's not as if it would be consensual.
Posted by Anonymous | June 16, 2009 3:53 PM
why is it still necessary to wear those wool hats on a summer day..
fucking hipsters
Posted by Anonymous | June 16, 2009 4:12 PM
I don't understand how people are raving about [band X] being so amazing. If I am not mistaken each band only played for 10 minutes, how the hell can a band be amazing only playing for 10 minutes?
All the people who are defending how "awesome" this day was keep saying is "wow, the weather was great". If all it takes to make a day amazing is the sun coming out you are a sad person and it makes you sound like a hippie.
Posted by Anonymous | June 16, 2009 4:15 PM
4:15 no likey nothin!
4:15 hate sun!
4:15 curse god!

the worst part was when the sun came out and everyone was in their bathing suits and little gold was playing serenely. I hated that.
also sucked when I went swimming and drank beer on the beach out of cups and everyone was smiling.
but god it was just fucking awful when the sun was setting and the ocean got all orange hued and kurt vile was playing intensely with everyone gathered in close.
seriously: worst beach party with free music and happy vibes all around EVER

why can't a band be amazing for just ten minutes? ponytail played "celebraate the body electric" and that's all i remember. it was great. the drummer in the coathangers has a fascinating/awesome voice.
