Adam Yauch

BEASTIE BOYS TOUR DATES CANCELED, ALBUM RELEASE POSTPONED
ADAM YAUCH DIAGNOSED WITH PAROTID GLAND TUMOR

Adam "MCA" Yauch of Beastie Boys was diagnosed last week as having a cancerous tumor in his left parotid (salivary) gland. Luckily it was caught early and is localized in one area, and as such is considered very treatable. It will however require surgery and several weeks of additional treatment. Fortunately the cancer is not in a location that will affect Yauch's vocal chords.

Beastie Boys have canceled all upcoming concert appearances to allow time for Yauch's surgery and recovery. The release of the band's forthcoming album Hot Sauce Committee Part 1 will also be pushed back.

Paraphrasing from a video statement on Beastieboys.com [below], Yauch said, "I just need to take a little time to get this in check, and then we'll release the record and play some shows. It's a pain in the neck (sorry had to say it) because i was really looking forward to playing these shows, but the doctors have made it clear that this is not the kind of thing that can be put aside to deal with later."

Saddest news... Get well soon Adam.

Beastie Boys were scheduled to play many festivals this summer including All Points West on Friday, July 31st.

The video message is below...

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2009 12:38 PM

Get well soon Adam! The show at McCareen was so much fun!

Now who will YYYs step up and play their biggest NY show ever???

Goldenvoice should ask.......

Today is the fourth and final day of the Latitude Festival. Thom Yorke has been announced as a very special guest at the Obelisk Arena in Suffolk, where he debuted a new song and almost played another unreleased track.

The performance was already pretty unique as the Radiohead frontman hasn’t done any solo shows since the release of ‘The Eraser’. Thom Yorke took the stage at noon. Despite the early hour, the festival organiser called Thom Yorke’s performance another headlining slot at the festival. Responding to the crowd’s cheers Thom said: “Shhh… There’s people sleeping”. Playing on piano, Thom started with ‘The Eraser’, which was the first of five tracks played from Thom Yorke’s debut album. When someone from the crowd shouted “I love you Thom”, he replied; “Yes dear, I’ll be home later.” For Harrowdown Hill and Black Swan Thom took the guitar, looped it and returned to the organ. Everything In Its Right Place was played on piano as well as on a sampler and drum machine.

Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich was watching (and singing along) on the side of the stage. Thom Yorke played three songs which were never released on a studio album; ‘Follow Me Around’, ‘True Love Waits’ and played for the new song ‘The Present Tense‘ for the first time with key lyric ‘I’m Lost In You’. “Thank you for having me,” said Thom at the end of the set. Thanking the Latitude Festival, he said: “I thought it was a nuts idea, which is why I did it!” (…) “Have a wicked Sunday”.

The original setlist had a different encore planned. ‘Reckoner’ from Radiohead’s ‘In Rainbows’ was on the setlist, but was not played as well as another unreleased song ‘Give Up Ghost’.

The BBC promised a broadcast of Thom Yorke’s full set on Tom Robinson’s 6Music show Today, but it turned to be only two tracks: Harrowdown Hill and True Love Waits, you can listen to both soundboard recordings – and an audience recording of The Present Tense over at FineFineMusic.com.

Here’s the full setlist.

Setlist:

01 The Eraser
02 Weird Fishes/Argpeggi
03 Atoms For Peace
04 Harrowdown Hill (at the end of the song: “I’ll Be Your Bitch”)
05 Follow Me Around (”One that’s on the shelf and never made it off. Did you like that? Good! It’s on YouTube now”)
06 Everything In Its Right Place
07 The Present Tense (”A New song, so you know, go for a piss”)
08 Cymbal Rush
09 Black Swan (Not too confident about his guitar loops: “It’ll be a miracle if this works”
10 Videotape

Encore:
11 There There (”Anyone see Grace Jones? I want those costume changes. G-string. Is that a good idea?”)
12 True Love Waits (”This is another song that fell off the shelf once…and it’s still there”)

APW does not have enough creativity to find a replacement in such short notice. I expect that YYY are the new headliners with new bands filling in the bottom slots.

This festival is not a regular one, it's APW. Don not expect a new headliner to come aboard.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2009 3:19 PM

You will beat this MCA. Get well soon.

Posted by Dan | July 20, 2009 3:23 PM

noooooo!! listen all ya'll, it's a sabotage! anybody but kings of leon!! they almost ruined the first APW for me... sandwiched right in there between animal collective and radiohead as if they were on the same level! a disgrace it was. and what's worse, all the while i could hear bits and pieces of the infamous Roots crew filtering in from the second stage, trying to lure me away from my prime vantage point at the main stage.

please goldenvoice, pick a worthy replacement. or just make the YYYs the headliner and extend their set. that'd be fine by me. you could even get Discovery to do a daytime set beings both band members are already playing at the fest. that'd be kinda cool since i don't believe they've played any live shows yet.

get well mca.

Posted by Cameron | July 20, 2009 3:44 PM

Wow, I hate cancer. Please get better, Adam, and many prayers with you.

As for APW...

Jane's Addiction, Bjork, Beck, RATM -- bands who tend to have hip-hop tendancies when they sing that are also white, basically, to hit the Beastie demographic.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2009 3:45 PM

Most comment-leavers here have extremely short memory spans, so I would like to point out that, though it was LADEN with logistical problems, the 1st two days of APW last year had:

Radiohead
Grizzly Bear
Animal Collective
Kings of Leon
Andrew Bird
Girl Talk
Underworld
Chromeo
The Roots
New Pornographers (or were they day 3?)
Felice Brothers

That is a pretty fucking stacked lineup by July, 2009 standards. So...it's by no means a perfect festival, but it may not have been as poorly-booked as it seemed at the time.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2009 3:56 PM

Being that the YYY's are one of the best bands of the 00's, I think they did just fine with that booking.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2009 4:19 PM

I guess being vegan isn't the cure all. Oh well, pass me a steak.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2009 4:26 PM

MEH MEH MEHs

"Being that the YYY's are one of the best bands of the 00's, I think they did just fine with that booking."

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2009 4:26 PM

From the APW website:

"YES SADLY BEASTIE BOYS CANCEL. PLEASE SIT TIGHT WHILE WE MAKE NEW ARRANGEMENTS

Monday, July 20, 2009
Yes we are aware that Beastie Boys have canceled their tour dates. Please give us a day or so to sort out alternative plans. Stay tuned for details."

The wording and use of "arrangements" and "alternative plans" leads me to believe they might just switch some bands around or just add a few more new mid-upper tier acts on Friday.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2009 4:34 PM

it's benign. Christ, relax people

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2009 5:35 PM

Bust the ol' cancer's balls MCA!

I'm going to be completely different on the APW front and suggest that...GV is going to surprise us with a big Beastie headliner replacement. GV know they can't just push up YYY's...no way.

Hold tight and something surprising might come along...the victim will be the hip hop fans. Sorry folks.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2009 5:38 PM

I like how on the video announcement, the Beastie Boys are laughing about the fact that he has cancer...

Posted by The End of Irony | July 20, 2009 6:18 PM

I guarantee GV has been on the phone with those that represent Kings of Leon and The Killers all day...unless there are contractual issues that preclude them from playing, I'd bet a lot of money that we will see one of those bands at APW.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2009 6:41 PM

I GOT THE CANCER!!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2009 6:48 PM

Kings of Leon...please no.
The Killers...pretty please no.

Cancel Friday if you have to but please neither of these bands will suffice.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2009 7:06 PM

best wishes MCA, get well soon

please no Killers at all points west. i could live with kings of leon,

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2009 7:10 PM

Listen to RXP tomorrow morning and I guarantee Mike McCready and Matt Pinfield will announce this.

Posted by Laura | July 20, 2009 7:11 PM

GV has the biggest balls of all if this comes to pass.

Best to MCA - kick it.

SCANDALS! SCANDALS! SCANDALS!

DANGER! DANGER! DANGER!

GEORGE W. BUSH IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS CRIMINAL STALKER!

“In her suit, Margie Schoedinger states that George W. Bush committed sexual crimes against her, organized harassment and moral pressure on her, her family members and close relatives and friends. As Schoedinger said, she was strongly recommended to keep her mouth shut. . . . Furthermore, she alleges that George Bush ordered to show pressure on her to the point, when she commits suicide” (go to Google, type “blog of drizzten Margie Schoedinger,” and hit “Enter”).

“George [Bush is personally complicit] in the death (murder to be precise) of my friend Margie Schoedinger in September of 2003. Determining the exact whereabouts and contacts of . . . George Bush on September 21 thru 22, 2003, should be entirely lacking in difficulty” (Leola McConnell—Nevada Progressive Democratic Candidate for U.S. Senate in 2010).

McConnell is correct: Bush applying pressure (continuously criminally stalking Margie Schoedinger) purposefully to force Schoedinger to commit suicide does in fact constitute murder where it culminated in her death.

Bush’s method of murdering Schoedinger cannot exist in a vacuum: he must have murdered other people in the same way.

During Bush’s presidency, of course Bush would have desired to kill people whom he hated or get them out of his way. Insofar as Bush was clearly capable of murdering Schoedinger—even in “broad daylight”—and is clearly capable of getting away with it, in consideration of common sense and the laws of human nature, Bush of course murdered numerous people in the disgusting way he murdered Schoedinger. One can examine public information; in various situations where people who sought to oppose or disadvantage Bush ever so frighteningly ended up “committing suicide”—specifically—Bush murdered them just like he murdered Schoedinger. For example, Bush murdered James Howard Hatfield by continuously criminally stalking Hatfield to the point that Hatfield could not get away from it—purposefully to force Hatfield to commit suicide—and Hatfield committed suicide in desperation to escape. However, the vast majority of such scandalous cases will never come out (the grisly details are typically hard to substantiate). A prosecutor really can lawfully charge a former president with murdering one or more people in the disgusting way Bush murdered Schoedinger. The American people unfortunately live in a world where evil presidents can murder any number of people—figuratively—with a wave of a magic wand and get away with it.

(There are thousands of copies of the information above on the Internet. Please feel free to go to any major search engine, type “GEORGE W. BUSH IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS CRIMINAL STALKER” or “George W. Bush continuously criminally stalked Margie Schoedinger to the point that she could not get away from it, and she committed suicide in desperation to escape: he murdered her” or “George W. Bush applying pressure (continuously criminally stalking Margie Schoedinger) purposefully to force Schoedinger to commit suicide does in fact constitute murder where it culminated in her death” or “George W. Bush murdered James Howard Hatfield by continuously criminally stalking Hatfield to the point that Hatfield could not get away from it—purposefully to force Hatfield to commit suicide—and Hatfield committed suicide in desperation to escape,” hit “Enter,” and readily find hundreds of copies.)

older hip hop artist out of nyc, has a new album coming out, doing shows this summer but free at that time. and unlike the above haters i think that would be AMAZING. he brings it live, a great show. hope it happens, a most worthy replacement.

Get well MCA! Health is wealth. I don't want
go to a "half-arse" Beasties show.

When everything gets well.....woohooooo!!!!

Posted by cindy | July 21, 2009 7:42 AM

Pearl Jam headlining Friday would we fantastic....but it does seem unlikely. While they are fan favs for sure, they just aren't the type to fill in at the last moment. Don't kid yourselves...this is last moment in festival terms.
I suppose a good thing about PJ is they don't require any PJ specific rigging.

Jay-Z is a great local but I'm guessing GV really want Friday to sell-out and he won't do that (Beasties didn't do it). He's been in the tristate area a lot lately.

YYY's could do it but that would be a bit of bummer. We already have them on the bill.

Outkast to the rescue

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2009 9:33 AM

Okay, so the rumours have ranged from Paul McCartney, Thome York, Kanye, Jay-z, Daft Punk, Pearl Jam, The Killers, and Outkast. Granted they are just rumours, but I like the sound of most of those names headlining a day already stacked for indie/hip hop fans alike.

However, those of you who would love to see the killers or kings of leon, or who think the yeah yeah yeahs are headliner worthy (but the beasties weren't), haven't the slightest idea of what quality music really is!

Posted by Josh | July 21, 2009 3:18 PM

If they got Macca I would be so stoked. He doesn't have to be in MD until the next night, so technically it's possible, but he'd be a lot more expensive than the Beasties, that's for sure.

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2009 3:29 PM

Lollapalooza just announced that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are now taking the place of the Beasties, playing opposite of Tool. I now think Perry Ferrell is going to return the favor for Goldenvoice by bringing Jane's Addiction to APW.

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2009 4:28 PM

Cancer is so scary. I love Adam and the Beasties and how they've evolved over time.
Good luck, be well. Will miss you at APW.

Posted by cynthia | July 21, 2009 9:57 PM

They should do a hardcore/hip hop HYBRID maSHup to honor both sides of the Beasties music. Their origins AND what they became, like a get well type shit to MCA.

I say Gorilla Biscuits and RUN DMC with Cut Creator on the tables in place of JMJ.

Make it so! I know you "hipster/yuppie transplants" can't wrap your heads around that. That shit would be TRUE NYC, unlike all you art house posers.

Posted by Jay BORN IN BROOKLYN | July 22, 2009 1:23 AM

I buy into the whole Jane's Addiction theory from above. However, I love the Pearl Jam rumors.

BTW...Sir Paul is a no way...even with the Coachella link in place. There are too many logistics and he just played three nights at CitiShea.

Jaz-Z...nope...in the 'hood too much recently.
Kanye...nope...just because.
YYY's...nope...already on the bill and GV is smarter than pulling that push up the not quite headliner yet. Lolla is different because there at two main stages.

Beastie Boys are legends but mash ups in general just suck. Pure and simple.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2009 9:56 AM

If there is no issue with having a repeat, I think KoL is still a possibility, too. They will be performing on the "Today Show" that morning, so would be very easy for them to make it happen. Otherwise they don't have area dates here until mid-September. Just sayin.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2009 10:02 AM

Jane's Addiction is in Australia next week so they are out. Realistic alternatives are The Killers and Kings of Leon with Pearl Jam as an outside dark horse. With all the non-sold out Killers/Kings of Leon shows around in the coming months though, there may be some contract limitations.

Note: I am not endorsing the Killers or Kings of Leon...just being practical here.

The other practical move would be to pocket the Beasties money, bump up the YYYs and fill the lineup up with one or two mid-level acts. I don't think this is ideal from anyone's point of view, but I won't be surprised if it happens.

The rumors about Adam beating cancer are not entirely true. As of January 2011, he posted the following on his site: "Hello My Friends While I’m grateful for all the positive energy people are sending my way, reports of my being totally cancer free are exaggerated. I’m continuing treatment, staying optimistic and hoping to be cancer free in the near future." Go Adam, go! We are rooting for you
