"Was anyone else shocked by the NYPD? I saw them arresting 2 hipsters, and the cops were quite aggressive and violent, like one guy was put down, and the other one had his arm twisted in his back and it looked painful. I am sure there were some kind of legit reasons for taking these hipsters away, but not so violently!!!" [pilou]
Unlike Trail of Dead, but like HEALTH (and Grupo Fantasma) the Black Lips played a set at the JellyNYC Pool Party at the Williamsburg Waterfront on Sunday (7/26). Black Lips return to NYC in September to open for Yo La Tengo at Roseland Ballroom. Tickets are on sale.

In related news, the Black Lips are also now members of the Almighty Defenders supergroup. More pictures from the Watefront, the new video for "Drugs", and all tour dates, below...

2nd pic from the top is extremely awesome

Coppers hate the weed.

Were they serving Colt 45? Did Colt 45 hire people to hold it up in pictures or something? It's in that video too.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 12:30 PM

The crowd looks like a busload of high school kids. Good thing this show wasn't at night, they would have all had to be in bed.

It's easy to say the Black Lips are recycling 50's garage rock, thus not being original. But if the original 50's garage rock bands are to play today, you'd be like, "old man gots to quit". The best thing about this kind of music is its youthful rebellious spirit set to a highly infectious beat you can dance to. That's what Black Lips brought full force. One may be the originator of this music which I'm not trying to diminish, but there's something to be said about being young.

Btw, I'm 35 and I thought the Black Lips brought the thunder.

this band is like a compilation of the Nuggets songs that no one picks on the jukebox. You can thank their popularity to hype, Vice, and Colt 45. Whee!

That show was the siznit! I got caught in the swirling crush to the stage and couldn't have been more estatic to be in the best mosh pit I've seen for years. The kids (some looked well underage as they were downing 40's of Old English) were just spreadin the fun! It was a mass blast and a great set! Colour me impressed! Still pissed Trail wussed out, but it woulda been hard to top that!

Posted by Deano Bravo | July 27, 2009 1:04 PM

at 3 minutes in the video, one of the security guys tries to kick one of the band members off the stage, because he doesn't realize he is in the band. The other security guy has to tell him...

so it was due to pot? the arrests? fckin cops.
i assume they were in uniform? if that's the case, there's really no reason to get urself caught.

i dunno...smoking in public is a huge thing for me. anyone else?

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 1:06 PM

black lips fans look like a bunch of teabaggers

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 1:13 PM

Security also kept gesturing to the soundboard to cut them off.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 1:13 PM

The young people seem to enjoy this band

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 1:26 PM

great show. why does anyone care about how old the people who decided to push to the front were?

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 1:36 PM

state troopers, not NYPD. it's a state park.

if Trail of Dead played in the storm there would have really been a Trail of Dead with Black Lips but not much Health! but yellow-backpack girl will outlast everyone.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 1:42 PM

Really great pics here! Captures the energy perfectly. Still pissed about Trail of Dead.... I want my money back!

Posted by @willbah | July 27, 2009 1:52 PM

those are some hott jorts

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 1:53 PM

There was certainly weed.

Also, while there were plenty of people pushing, crowd surfing, and having a good time, there were others who were just being dangerous and unsafe.

Posted by The End of Irony | July 27, 2009 1:55 PM

looks like poeple having a good time

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 2:20 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 2:29 PM

I saw two fat naked bikers off by the water having sex.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 2:36 PM

I really hope these dudes play Maxwell's again - AND that it's 21+.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 2:44 PM

i love listening to these guys before my 3rd period algebra class. they get me pumped!

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 2:53 PM

Um 12:56 I believe it was the clouds above that brought the thunder!

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 2:53 PM

Black Lips Rock and they have a good time doing it too! That's rock and roll, you pretentious hipster fucks. All music is recycled from generations past. Who cares who they sound like? They pour their hearts out into their music and their live shows, that is why they are popular. The apathy that surrounds most shows in Brooklyn these days is nauseating. Wake up have fun!

Posted by Jason | July 27, 2009 2:56 PM

freckle girl's hot

jorts are hot too

hot stuff

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 3:07 PM

Are Black Lips still doing that thing where they makeout on stage and spit into each others' mouths and all that? Or is that not cool anymore?

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 3:09 PM

They didn't even pee in each other's faces? Glad I skipped this to go to the nob competition.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 3:16 PM

looks like people having a good time

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 3:51 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 3:52 PM

show was fun. don't be dicks. black lips live shows are almost never disappointing.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 4:16 PM

i for one would like to call blockader nationwide rentals and loudly voice my opinion on the inefficacy of their device.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 4:48 PM

I was right up front and I can attest to it being an amazing time. Too bad there aren't any shots of Cole when he was fighting one of the security bros. Good seeing him stick up for the crowd in that instance.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 8:01 PM

music is only for adults

" Too bad there aren't any shots of Cole when he was fighting one of the security bros. Good seeing him stick up for the crowd in that instance"

Yeah... it's good when self-entitled, spoiled douche bags fuck with a guy and make it impossible for him to do the job he has been told to do while making $10/hour to pay his rent and feed his family. Good for him!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2009 8:50 PM

If you are a 20-something or younger in this day-n-age, NOTHING you are or do will matter to anyone but yourselves. Sorry to have to tell you this, but it's true. Especially when it comes to shit like The Black Lips and anyone in their audience. - Karl

These photos are amazing! Bao Ngyen for the win.

"...the cops were quite aggressive and violent, like one guy was put down, and the other one had his arm twisted in his back and it looked painful..."

State Troopers, NYPD, or whatever - this is how cops arrest people in the NYC area when they attempt to avoid arrest (i.e. do anything except hold perfectly still and repeat "Yes, officer.")

The kids were lucky they didn't get faceplanted into cement.

Posted by Lori | July 28, 2009 7:55 PM

i really love the black lips but i really really really dislike their fans.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2009 9:05 PM

I am glad I wont be anywhere near this area when Girl Talk plays. Who knows what will happen at that...hopefully they get better security.

Posted by Anonymous | July 31, 2009 12:21 PM

and lot's more Colt 45!

Posted by Anonymous | July 31, 2009 1:39 PM
