Cheveu

"This Parisian trio has been making scene noise, and for plenty good reason: their songs go a long way to carve out a real living end, so what you get is a neatly reductive sound universe, all patent recall and sass and open Gallic charm. Byron Coley calls them "devolved in a lopsided way," which is sort of spot-on. Cheveu excel at keeping things simple in the heat of an energetic rave-up. You sort of imagine these guys never breaking an honest sweat. Their songs roll out like a weird iteration of nature--all the rock tropes we thought we'd forgot, or lost interest in--made extant and coy, and attacked from within." [Cokemachineglow]
Almost missed the fact that Cheveu is in town from France! Catch them at Silent Barn tonight (7/17) and PS1 on Saturday. All dates and some videos below...

what a fucking pretentious description for some noise-rock.

I liked this scene at first, but c'mon guys, it's not like you're over here changing music. Just admit you're having fun!

"what a fucking pretentious description for some noise-rock."

It's from a review of their record, not the band.

cokemachineglow prides itself on how ridiculously masturbatory their writers get from their own reviews. just imagine if pitchfork was bitter because they had no pull in the 'indie' scene.

I don't think these bands are positioning themselves as innovators, or set out to change music or anything. In fact, most bands that consciously try to do that from the outset produce very contrived, very pedestrian music.

people who comment on this blog are not the audience for this kind of music.

none of you have any idea what you'e talking about, please stick to your postal services and your death cab for cuties's and your grizzly bears, you'll be a lot happier

I'm all for smart, dense write-ups of all music, rock included. Christgau, Bangs, Tosches, etc etc. But holy shit, that cokemachineglow snippet is some seriously overripe verbal wankery.

Art criticism should provide a service to others: it should help people make informed choices about art products or events. This cokemachineglow shit does the opposite; it inspires more confusion with its insular, clunky word-games.

Cheveu kicked shit at Silent Barn the other night! Did anyone go to PS1?
