Elgin James

"CHICAGO--The self-proclaimed founding member of a street gang that purports to exert control through use of violence over hardcore punk rock music in clubs and concert venues in major cities nationwide was arrested yesterday by FBI agents in Los Angeles on a federal extortion charge filed in Chicago. The defendant, Elgin Nathan James, allegedly extorted $5,000 from an unnamed victim, a popular recording artist from the Chicago area, while the victim's band was on tour in late 2005 and early 2006, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, announced today." [FBI]
The street gang they're referring to is the notorious straight-edge crew FSU which stands for Friends Stand United, or as most know it... Fuck Shit Up (or as the FBI document refers to it, "F(_ _ _) S(_ _ _) Up"). The charges continue...
On Nov. 27, 2005, the victim and several friends left a bar in Orlando, Fla., and were jumped by a group of men, some of whom were wearing clothing with logos that said "FSU" and "FSU Nation." The victim escaped with one friend. But another friend and that friend's brother were severely beaten by the gang, the charges allege. About an hour later, the victim received a telephone call from James, and according to the victim, James asked how the victim's trip to Florida was going when the victim had never told James that the victim would be traveling in Florida......

.....On Feb. 25, 2006, under FBI surveillance, the victim met James outside the southern California club and handed James an envelope containing $5,000, which the FBI had provided to the victim, according to the charges

As stated above, these charges are just coming now - over 3 years after the above incident happened. Since then Elgin James moved to LA, released a short film starring Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz and became a Sundance recognized-filmmaker! More about FSU and Elgin below...

Elgin James
Elgin James

[Elgin James] befriended a group of kids from the tough Boston neighborhoods. They started FSU... in violent response to the number of Neo-Nazi hate groups on the rise across the country.

FSU was made up of a handful of Irish, Black and Puerto Rican kids. Since they were usually outnumbered by their 'enemies' (Nazis, other street gangs) they compensated with viciousness. They would use makeshift weapons such as hammers, Cue balls in a sock and even a human thighbone. Soon racist skinheads, who had been such a common sight at Boston hardcore and punk rock shows, became scarce.

To date there have been FSU chapters in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Chicago, Dallas, Portland Maine, Seattle, and Los Angeles. Despite the group's anti-racist past, critics frequently accuse FSU members of instigating and perpetuating gang violence.

[After successfully eliminating] several Nazi groups; Elgin turned his attention to drug dealers. He eschewed the usual passive ideals of straight edge and instead went, in his own words "right after the heart of the enemy, money" . He would rob drug dealers and then use the money to produce music and film that furthered 'straight edge beliefs'. [wiki]

Reportedly the infamous Boston Beatdown series of DVDs (which made the Boston news, video below) was funded via "reclaimed" drug money...

Boston Beatdown On The News

"According to Absolutepunk.net Elgin has started a band with New Found Glory's Chad Gilbert. They will be releasing a record in 2009." [Wiki]

good riddance. the self-proclaimed Robin Hood-esque nature of these thugs is laughable. these turds are just as bad as all the other thugs they claimed to despise...worse, even. I hope there are more arrests to come, and that these parasites get what's coming to 'em.

FSU is the definitely the scariest crew in Boston. It is kind of fucked up how far their influence reaches. I hope this guy gets ass-raped in jail.

Anyone remember another Skinhead crew in Boston back in the early 90s called The Boston Mob? They all wore black flights and had The Boston Mob embroidered on the back? Man, guys like them and the FSU really made those shows memorable

Um ok, so 454 Big Block's "Your Jesus."

The reason that I like this record so much, uh, aside from the fact that it's amazing is, um, I feel like it was kind of overlooked when it actually came out and now it's like this absolute classic record. But, uh, when it was actually reviewed, when it came out, it really didn't do very...I mean it did well, but it didn't do extremely well. Rolling Stone at the time gave it like..I think 2 out of 5 stars or something like that. And then when they re-released it they said it was 5 out of 5 stars, when they did the next review. But it was just a very important record in my formidable years and, um, it's a classic pop record.

The only reason Elgin James had a film "recognized by sundance" is because Ben Stambler, an FSU member (and suburban pussy from a rich family), was manager of acquisitions at the now defunct, Think Film, the company that released and legitimized that piece of shit short. I'm sure a "favor" was asked of Ben by Nathan(elgin) and he had no choice but to greenlight it.

FSU is a crock of shit. They were all heroin dealing drug addicts NOT sxe civil rights warriors. Ask anybody from Boston HC back in the day about Jamie Calcagno. The most notorious FSU member. Total dope fiend. 456 Big Block wrote a song about him.

Also Ask Jonah From Only Living Witness how pious FSU were.

Thats the real FSU the FSU that turned into Outlaws, not these youthcrew pawn faggots from Nevada/Jersey/Philly etc.

All of this was very very public information for YEARS. 3 fucking A&E documentaries later and BrooklynVegan starts regurgitating lies.

good riddance mr. james, the jigs up.

Whoever wrote this piece should really do some journalistic research on FSU. They dispatched the Nazi menace because they WERE the Nazi menace.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 9:59 AM

Yeah, FSU kinda ruined Seattle for a second. One thing though, I don't think FSU was a straight edge crew. Most of the kids that brought FSU over to seattle were military from the east coast that were stationed nearby. Plus, a bunch of them ended up doing some sketchy stuff involving coke and what not.

FSU are about as straight edge as Courtney Love. These guys are nothing more than a bunch of racist, homophobic, misogynistic, violent, dumbfuck hooligans.

Another thing, remember how Boston used to have a thriving music scene back in the 80's & early 90's? Well guess who killed all of that off? That's right, FSU. Their antics caused many clubs to go under from the bad publicity that these assholes reined down upon the city. They were like the mafia, they'd approach club owners and offer them "protection", and if the club owners didn't accept...well, bad publicity & licenses being yanked by the city due to violence at that club was a result. Through these tactics FSU even *became* the security at a few of the clubs for a while (like the Rat in Kenmore Square)...not that it stopped the violence, in fact, it probably increased because now they had impunity to do whatever they wanted without anyone getting in their way.

Fuck these guys. The amount of lives they've ruined, the amount of drugs & guns they've put on the street, the amount of property damage they've caused, the amount of people they've put in the hospital for no reason what-so-ever...and to top it all off they killed off a thriving music scene. I hope they all rot in hell.

It's about time. Every single FSU member I know is an insecure loser. Hopefully these fat failed sxe kids will take a break from chugging beers and shaking down merch girls behind venues now that their leader is catching heat. It's such a bumout that they have spread into every city, causing trouble and living their badass "punk rock" lifestyle via other people's sofas and the public system everyone else actually pays taxes to maintain. Fuck FSU and fuck anyone who is still stupid enough to think that their presence is "helping" anything.

Hmmm...Bruce Swaintock (may have spelled that wrong) who was an original member of FSU was a Confederate Hammerskin in the mid-1980's. Nathan James was a skinhead from Connecticut who didn't mind fence sitting--think back to Forced Reality days-- until somehow FSU got a name for "fighting nazis". Incidentally, I am a Boston native and saw very few Nazi skins in the area. The few that showed up got chased away pretty quick. Sure, FSU might have been involved in that but it was a case of personality clashes and "turf" BS, nothing about being crusading anti-racists.

I knew Nathan vaguely when he worked the door at The Paradise in Boston and got along well enough with him. The trouble is, Nathan will say anything you want to hear, depending on the crowd or who is listening. I've met few people who want to be "infamous" more.

As for the SXE thing, I have no idea where that all started. I know Nathan didn't do drugs or drink but I met plenty of FSU members who did. And listened to racist bands, for that matter.

Some of the FSU guys I knew were okay, some were big assholes. But it does seem like the latter category ultimately won out...I never feared going to a show because of "Nazi skins" but certainly would think twice if there was going to be a large FSU presence.

I'm no FSU expert and wouldn't want to be. Just telling people what I saw in the late 1980's, early '90's before shit like this made me give it up for Nick Drake records.

What goes around, comes around, doesn't matter if you are a white power asshole, a drug dealing asshole or a "saving hardcore" asshole.

Once the Pheonix starts to rise there can be no stopping it. The fire builds and engulfs all that was once dark with light, all that was once cold with heat, all that was once dead with life. This is not the end of Elgin James. This is the flashpoint that separates all that was with all that will be. Long live the Pheonix.

I dodged some nazi crap at a couple jazz shows at Brown U in about 94. I wonder if it's because FSU scurred em outta the punk scene and over to us dorks playing trumpets? if so, thanks FSU, my freind getting hit with a tire iron was wicked hilarious! He's mostly OK now, in case you wanna send a card.

At least Elgin's beliefs were right, he may not have carried them out in the best manner but his head was on straight.

A lot of respect for Elgin and all of FSU. The whole extortion thing is pretty bad, I am amazed that it came to that. Also curious to know what band it was that was being forced to pay out.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2009 3:53 PM

Elgin is an amazing writer. The guy on here claiming Ben had anything to do with him getting into Sundance has his head up his ass. Think Films didn't even pick up the "Goodnight Moon" short until it had over two million views on Youtube, so much for Elgin asking for a favor. Think Films was out of business before pen went to paper for the feature length script of "Goodnight Moon". His talent got him his representation and got him into Sundance. Anyone claiming anything different doesn't know shit and is most likely jealous.

Elgin is the real deal, he's a smart talented guy that I've known since the mid 90's when he was working at the Paradise. He may of done some things in his past, but he moved three thousand miles away to leave all that behind. Anyone claiming to know all these facts they claim to obviously don't.

Posted by Anonymous | July 29, 2009 2:40 AM

Ask Jonah from Only Living Witness about how pious FSU is? Was Jonah working on a documentary about them, I didn't know some failed musician from the Bay State was now the FSU biographer.

Why don't we ask some members of The Shods, or Milltown, or Brian McTernan or any label that ever had the misfortune of working with Jonah how much of an ass he is.

Elgin is one guy, he doesn't speak or represent all of FSU and he shouldn't be guilty for all the things any other member of FSU or someone just claiming to be a member ever did.

Posted by Anonymous | July 29, 2009 2:52 AM

For the joker who says Elgin's short film had over 2 million views on YouTube - gee, think that had anything to do with tweens checking out Pete Wentz...
No, I'm sure it was because it is such an amazing movie..give me a break..Elgin's no fool, do you really think he though anyone would look at his movie?

And according to you, he moved 3,000 miles away to "leave all that behind" Where was he making his extortion calls from? Oh yeah, it wasn't Boston, it was L.A..where did he meet the guy from Mest..Oh yeah, at a club in L.A. - You're full of it

Posted by Bruce | July 30, 2009 6:09 PM

Why does Elgin always wear a hat?

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2009 9:00 PM

I love how people claim to know where Elgin was making "extortion calls" from or that he was "living in California" when this alleged transaction took place.

Did you forget Elgin was also touring the country in Righteous Jams? The press release also said "Southern California" that could be anywhere from Santa Barbara to San Diego. Maybe they both had tour dates near each other. I have no clue.

Tony Lovato is a fucking joke, the guy has had a US Thugs tattoo on his stomach since at least 2003, look at pics of him on the warped tour proudly showing it off. He claims to have not known what FSU was? What about all the times his best friends Benji and Joel flew FSU guys to LA to hang out with them while trying to become members? What about the pics of Tony Lovato with Bloods online? Real nice people to hang with. Anyone with half a brain knows there's a whole fucking lot more to this story than in the FBI press release.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2009 3:21 PM

So because Tony Lovato is a "joke," then Elgin has a right to extort him?

Isn't this the smokescreen/twisted logic Elgin has been hiding behind his whole life? Pick an unpopular target (Hey everybody, I'm not a 30 something hanging out in Boston picking fights with drunk college kids, I'm fighting "Nazis"!!!) and you can do whatever you want to them?

Went to hardcore shows for almost a decade - didn't see any "Nazis" - what the hell purpose did FSU serve after they supposedly drove the "Nazis" out of the scene in Boston?

Oh yeah, they got to pimp themselves making the violent equivalent of porno videos.

What goes around comes around

Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2009 12:17 PM

How do we know if Elgin extorted anyone? This is a criminal complaint, it came from one guy with his own gang and white power ties who made the recordings himself. Do we know how many other conversations he might of been hiding? Despite living in California for years, Tony still likes to tell people he lives in Blue Island, IL, where the American Nazi Skinhead movement pretty much began. Elgin has not been indicted yet, so who knows what's going on.

I remember plenty of Nazis hanging around Kenmore. I went to shows in Boston for almost a decade also and never had a problem with FSU, was I intimidated by some of those dudes, sure, they were gigantic. But in the same way I was intimidated when a group of New England Patriots would get invited to some BCN or FNX show and try to "mosh".

How many FSU guys are even fighting on the Boston Beatdown videos? Most of those are the drunken townies and college kids hanging out on Landsdowne.

Sorry you had such a boner trying to be a part of FSU and they turned you down. I never wanted to be a part and was friends or acquaintances with lots of them and know this shit is getting twisted out of control.

Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2009 3:03 PM

Funny how the sewing circle works. Some of these post are so backwards. I lived it. I have known Jonah and Bruce for twenty years. I don't think I ever even saw them cross path's. I think Jonah is a great guy, when did he become anyone who knew what went on with FSU? He was a cool kid with a cool band and wrote a zine actually in New Hampshire. He actually had a few blackbelts to boot. Bruce lived in Maine. Nathan lived in Boston. Hell let's really stir the pot and throw Mike Cartier's name in the mix, I'm prettty sure I'm one of the last people who ever saw him alive.
FSU didn't get it's reputation beacause Nathan or Bruce are pussies. These are guys who took out four or five dudes at a time by themselves on the street. If Nathan goes to jail, he'll be just fine, he practically grew up in jail. If you saw pictures of FSU in 1990 you'd laugh. These weren't big bullies. These were normal sized kids who fought like it was for their life everytime they had too.
Nathan was straight edge. Bruce (and that's not even close to his last name above) went back and forth and the hammers on his neck were from Pink Floyd, Not the Confederate Hammerskins. Bruce enjoyed drinking but often quit because he knew he became more violent when he did. FSU was not a straight edge crew. I was never straight edge. Shit, it probably would done me some good. On the other hand, I never knew anyone to use any drugs other than smoking some weed. There was a lot of beer and malt liqour.
We sure as shit ran nazi skinheads out of town. I know, I did it. They would come into the burbs, have little punk rock parties for the high school kids, liqour them all up and then the propaganda and the preaching started. Fuck them, they got what they deserved. FSU is truly the reason that there has been no racist presence in the Boston Hardcore or punk scene for over twenty years. There aren't any other cities like that.
You can all look back twenty years later and point fingers. Hind sight is 20/20. It might be a lot worse now if FSU hadn't struck fear and heart of any racially predjudice group that thought of entering New England.

Posted by Kevin Veinot | August 25, 2009 4:04 AM

"It might be a lot worse now if FSU hadn't struck fear and heart of any racially predjudice group that thought of entering New England"

Yes, thank you for your hard work.

Considering that racist hate groups are so huge in other parts of the country in the hardcore scene because there is/was no FSU

This is the equivalent of saying the Mafia made my neighborhood safe by driving out all the other criminals

Now all I have to do is stay on their good side, and everything will be ok

So what was the purpose of FSU after they drove the "Nazi's" out of Boston?

Posted by Dan Tar | September 12, 2009 11:05 AM

all the complaints about FSU are valid, and probably all true, but right now it seems a bit suspicious that the FBI is deciding to target many former "gang" members on racketeering charges (like alex sanchez) that have some connection (even if it seems bullshit) to some sort of political campaigns. perhaps a bit conspiracy theorist of me...

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2009 12:35 AM

I remember when Nate & Bruce showed up in Kenmore sq. Bruce had the hammers tattoo. I dont remember any Nazi skinhead gang in Boston ever. Nate replaced Glen in wrecking crew. in the 90's this FSU thing started. most of them were strong fit kids. I dont understand why they fought as a gang, most of them looked like they could hold there own with anybody 1 on 1.
in the last 90's I was jumped by FSU in the rat. because I insulted Nate. a mutual friend of mine & Nate broke it up before it got serious. after Nate said he was sorry that he had respect for me because I was from the "old school" but that I had to show him & his friends respect.
I saw many fights at the rat, bunrattys, channel, fathers, the linwood. but the FSU fights went to far. I cant say FSU killed the HC scene. but they did change it in a less than positive way.

Haverhill Skins and Boston Mob.... remember both well. I was from
Portsmouth, NH and Boston was another world for us circa 95-97, when we ventured to the Rat to see bands like the Unseen, Disordery Conduct, etc. Skinheads were the tough guys of the scene and I dont remember a nazi or FSU pressence, and since I was 13 and looked it most Skins gave me respect and didnt fuck with me cause I was young and into it. When bands like 454, Honkeyball, Blood For Blood came into play, FSU was there too and shit was never fun, always sketch. Extreme, overexagerated violence to anyone who fucked up, which in my experiences was bumping into a member, not clearing the pit, etc. Fuck FSU.

It's so funny when someone obviously just finished watching the Boston Beatdown documentary. You can tell they instantly hop on YouTube or some blog, without researching or making any consious effort to obtain the real story, and start the trash talk. "FSU is a bunch of pussies who need to be taught a lesson!" Well here's some shit for ya - only 3 clips from the documentary contain FSU fights.

C'mon: did you really think some of these chickenshit scuffles are FSU in action? I wish I could have seen the fight that occurred prior to the scene where Nathan and his boys are sewing up stab wounds. I bet that was epic!

The worst is people who will pass judgment after reading an FBI report. Police and the like are notorious for putting words in other's mouths and not getting the full story. I know this from personal experience.

For those of you who are actually from the scene and have mingled with FSU, your opinions are valid. Everyone else needs to get hit in the face with a brick for being a dummy. Less speculation, more reality please.

Based on my loose knowledge of this group, I think they are fairly noble. However, I don't know enough to make a definitive statement. Just know that most who trash-talk this group have their facts ass-backwards.

Hey Posted by Anonymous | December 27, 2010 6:59 PM

What's noble about grown men often in their 30's that go to shows and mob beat up little kids? If a 90 lb 18 year old looks at one of them wrong 6 dudes all kick his ass at once. Often joining in after the victim is already on the ground, repeatedly kicking them.

Seen it a number of times.

There is no honor in mass beating weak opponents. In general FSU are pussies who would run miles to avoid a clean one on one fight.

Thank god that FSU in NYC is small and tame.

They are not straight edge either...

It is histerical to me how half of you fucking people who have never dealt with these dudes have all the shit in the world to say. This "3,4,5 on one" bullshit. No one who didnt live in the Boston area in the early - mid 90's has any clue what it was like. There we alot of people who claimed FSU and started shit that werent really affiliated. When they were found out, they got thier ass beat for fucking up like they should have. I have been to shows all over from Boston, Brocton, Providence, Fall River, Taunton, all over and never came across a single FSU incident that some drunk ass college student or kid hitting chicks in the crown didnt start. period. THose dudes would kick it with anyone that showed any kind of respect....not because they were FSU but because they were PEOPLE.. and that was the whole point from the beginning.

FUCK FSU BUNCH OF PUSSIES... THE REASON YOU STARTED FSU WAS COOL BUT AFTER ABOUT A # YEARS OF THAT U GUYS SHIT THE BED BINCH OF FAGGOTS YOU NO BETTER THAN A GROUP OF SPICS IN THE GHETTO

Posted by chris | January 5, 2012 5:29 PM

FSU are pieces of shit.end of story, and nathan elgin james is a rat who rolled over on everyone..
fuck them...

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2012 11:34 AM

FSU are just total douchebags..the issue is - the scene doesnt have any heart cause if it did, everyone would unite and run FSU out of town for killing the boston music scene.. THERE WERE NO NAZIS TO FIGHT BACK THEN... Nazis were NOT big in boston. it is their excuse..
The scene doesnt have any heart, and FSU for sure has no heart if you get one in a 1 on 1 fight..
and whoever brought up mike cartier, watch it.... dont talk about him...

Is D in FSU?

Came into Hardcore directly into this scene. There was no whimpy shit and no cry babies. Even at the pozzy(positive)core shows , we danced (not moshing, jumping up and down pushing eachother is something they do in a lockerroom )and we threw down. The 90s in boston were different than they are today and they were a time when the city needed alittle slap in the face and a little pride. Path of Agression , right lets address this, dressing in all black, robbing drugdealers to finance projects... and the problem is ? That standard DEA tactics right there. Not all of us BHC cats were FSU or BXC. And not all the boys in FSU were Bxc hardcore edge. Just a big gaggle of misfits that saw the larger whole taking advantage of the disillusioned middle and lower classes. Sure we let the nation know that this was the forefront of it , but hardcore needed a driving force that was just that..hardcore. There is kind of an understanding when you go through those doors. You're gonna get you butt whipped tonight, so do a little whippin yourself , when its over , we're all having a fire on the tracks down by comm ave. . Disruption is a great was to get heard. For a generation that was left feeling alittle lost , it was our loudest cry. But we refused to cry help. We prefer "here I come". And its not just Elgin with that bite or be bitten mentality many hardcore "clubs" took no bull. SHARPs were SkinHeadsAgainstRacialPrejudice and just as prone to violence when the situation called for it. You see, thats just us , thats just Boston. We all bite back. Sometimes you gotta bite first.

FSU outside of boston , is a sleepy perversion of what we created on the streets of Allston (R.I.P. CastleNeck) and greater Boston. The L.A. Sanfran scene were too soft to accept us , said we were doing the scene a disservice. So dont start that "Try it here" shit. We did , you cried, we left. Thats why its us they remember and talk about when YOUR scene is discussed. As it was said above , not all of us operated on par with the social norm (mike WAS a little nuts, but a trip and a force to be reckoned with, all crews have atleast ONE CastleNeck ) but wasnt that also a big part of the scene? Breaking those binders as normal society already had no place for us ? Im not condoning any of the final acts (R.I.P. Kristen) of certain individuals , but there needs to be a realization that being walled off from society and pushed to the side over and over , any one is bound to snap. When society shuns you for "not belonging" then shuns all that you've now found to belong to. Repetitously. To some that may be the bottom and the bitter end. Either way , we beat up and were beat up by, your kids , your parents, your uncles and cousins. And we loved it.

lol @ being a skinhead from Boston. Slighly below pond scum eveloutionarily. What a life.

I have a tough time understanding why anybody could support or defend FSU. I've seen them hit ppl at clubs to try and hurt them and I also saw an incident at Middle East where and FSU guy was pulling fist back to punch a girl in the face and when someone stepped in the middle to stop the FSU guy the person who stepped in middle got sucker punched in the face by Minus. I am also aware of FSU guys who deal drugs and beat on women. They're the worst thing that ever happened to hardcore in Mass and Ct

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2014 8:25 PM

Who cares, minus a handful of bands, Mass and COnn hardcore sucks the big fat one.

I was friends in HS in Lawrence w/ Mike Cartier (castleneck), as bad as the crimes he committed were the guy wasn't pure evil. Saved my ass a couple times and he taught me how to survive the streets. he got into the junk and got lost...I miss you Mike RIP

Posted by M from Lawrence | February 25, 2014 1:59 PM

M from Lawrence, Mike was as close to pure evil as someone could get. Cut from the same cloth as a serial killer. He tortured and killed multiple animals, abused numerous girlfriends, ultimately killing Kristin.

BostonSHARP, who are you kidding? You clearly weren't a part of any scene. I don't remember a single SHARP skin that mattered -- or ever even hung around. Do you pretend to be a STAFF Skin at parties for fun?

No one was robbing drug dealers. That entire storyline was made-up for the press.

Posted by Unbelievable | March 6, 2014 7:54 PM

Unbelievable,

You likely didnt know Mike or the hellish existence he had as a young kid.

Sure man, what he did was pure fucking evil. All the shit with the animals started after he was in a bad car accident. That accident changed him, he was never the same afterwards. He went from being a caring trusted friend to a scary dude w/ obvious mental health issues. Right after he moved to Boston he got into smack and he turned into "castle neck", not the same dude I knew.

Not making excuses for his actions, there isn't one. But I remember him for his horrific actions as much as how much he helped me. I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for Mike.

I love reading about FSU. I like being able to read the truth who have experience it throughout the years and have dealt with these guys. Speaking of, how were 454 big block shows? Pretty violent?

I had no idea that Tallahassee had any kind of hardcore scene, move or less one to garner FBI attention
