Pains of Being Pure at Heart

As pointed out by Stereogum, there's a person who definitely won't be at the Pains of Being Pure at Heart Seaport show tonight.

Brooklyn shut up ! most of your bands all suck and you are total wanna bees ! The pains of being boring at heart ....oh it must hurt being so bland - Jay Reatard on Twitter
Pitchfork also posted the... news, and that's what Jay responded to 6 hours later in a second tweet...

Pains of Being Pure at Heart

Jay played his own outdoor NYC show in Manhattan on July 1st, and a show in Brooklyn the very next day. Did that one not go so well? Video from that show below...

Jay Reatard - its so easy - music hall of williamsburg

Jay Reatard - not a substitute - music hall of williamsburg

Hey! Let's no re-write history here.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:46 PM

Seriously though Brooklyn sucks

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:47 PM

it's true, 95% of the bands covered on this site totally suck

Posted by blunts | July 10, 2009 1:48 PM

I'm a fan of Jay's, and I think he's very talented. But it's pretty hysterical he's bitching like htis when he's not exactly doin' the most original thang out there.

Posted by rajah of rehab | July 10, 2009 1:49 PM

I was going to propose we have a Bore-a-Lympics where Pains of Being Fucking Boring can compete with Jay Retarded over who sucks more but then I realized that already exists and it's called Pitchfork Music Festival.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:50 PM

i'd like to see jay vs. all the members of pains. would be a pretty even fight. and would rid the world of a lot of lame music.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:53 PM

he speaks the truth

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:53 PM

ha. jealous jay is lame. lame. lame. nice publicity stunt, but still lame.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:56 PM

pains are dope....jay reatard is so shitty. stupid ass 2 chord songs that suck and arent even fun.

Posted by doo | July 10, 2009 1:57 PM

"most of your bands all suck" = true.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:58 PM

Sounds like Jay REatard would fit right in here in the comments sections.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:58 PM

jay reatard is tired. let him fade away.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:58 PM

whatever, he's a child

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 2:00 PM

brooklyn sucks, but reatard can't spell friends correctly.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 2:02 PM

I like Jay Reatard...I like the Brooklyn Bands...His twitter is by far and away the most entertaining one that I've subscribed to. Absoulutely hysterical commentary.

Posted by Travis | July 10, 2009 2:09 PM

So does his generalization apply to all the non-hipster/anglo gentrificationXcore crap living in Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Bushwick and taking over Bed-Stuy? Or does he really hate the salsa, hip-hop, and reggae acts, too?

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't get the message that Brooklyn was composed entirely of 20-something artfags with shitty bands and NO ONE ELSE.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 2:19 PM

"Oh I'm sorry, I didn't get the message that Brooklyn was composed entirely of 20-something artfags with shitty bands and NO ONE ELSE."

There are also yuppies.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 2:21 PM

like reatard is so original? look pains are cool. take it for what it is and stop complaining. the record is good, but if you don't like it then don't listen. it looks like at least all the pretentious assholes won't be at the show tonight.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 2:24 PM

the truth does hurt, Brooklyn

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 2:34 PM

2:19

jay obviously means the people who didn't know williamsburg, etc existed until the turn of the century. the "20 something artfags" if that's what people want to call them. anything is better than 'hipsters', seriously.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 2:35 PM

both bands suck, Brooklyn sucks, this site sucks, New York sucks, etc.

Posted by JT | July 10, 2009 2:37 PM

i wish twitter didn't exist so i didn't have to be informed of thoughts of artists i don't listen to

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 2:43 PM

Didn't this guy throw a fit and refuse to play after he didn't like what he heard from the band opening before him?

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 2:45 PM

Fact: all bands suck.

Posted by DJ Backfat | July 10, 2009 2:47 PM

i don't like reatard's music at all but he doesn't pretend to be anything other than he is. i mean, he calls himself reatard!

and brooklyn bands do suck. could they stop pretending they are so original! they actually could learn something from reatard.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 3:03 PM

I like both bands.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 3:10 PM

I like both The Pains and Reatard but this little kid is hurting for some attention. Tonights show at the seaport will be lovely minus a few twatty twitterers.. so fucking what?

Posted by redpoint | July 10, 2009 3:12 PM

Brooklyn used to not be associated with over privileged, racist, whining bitches.

Posted by mike flood | July 10, 2009 3:23 PM

Jay is just a big baby. His career is stalled so he's lashing out at people and places that get more attention than he's getting.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 3:30 PM

dissing a band and a borough on your twitter account is lame, but pains are pretty boring. saw them open for m83, and i was like "is this band worth standing around for?" so i went to go get a beer and kill some time in the basement.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 3:45 PM

If someone who willingly went to an M83 concert thinks a band is boring that's pretty solid evidence.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 4:07 PM

I don't see why Jay Reatard cares. He gets plenty of attention. He's signed to goddamn Matador, I also wouldn't say that POBPAH in any way accurately represent anything in Brooklyn, love them or hate them.

Posted by kl | July 10, 2009 4:08 PM

Love this tweet!

It makes Reatard sound like a pro-wrestler. He is from Memphis though, and pro-wrestling is huge there.

Reatard is apeing shit from the 70's. Pains of Being Pure is apeing shit from the 90's. Just so happens that more people are apeing shit from the 90's right now, so it sounds that much more generic.

At least Reatard paid his dues in a bunch of Memphis bands and put out a shitload of 7 inches before getting bigger, whereas Pains is trying to get their 10 songs on Gossip Girl, condemning their music to be that much more generic.

Rock on, Jay!

Posted by Anonymal | July 10, 2009 4:15 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 4:22 PM

I'm sure it must comfort Jay to know that some of the biggest idiots in the world - Brooklyn Vegan commenters - agree with him and his dumbassery

New York is NOT "just filled with people who migrate from Chicago and Ohio." The city is filled with people who have been here for generations AND it attracts people from all over the country. They're all New Yorkers so fuck you.

Posted by truth | July 11, 2009 12:43 AM

new york is the most diverse city in the world. we don't need to defend ourselves, we are the envy of the rest of the country and the world.

it really goes without saying.

"New York is NOT "just filled with people who migrate from Chicago and Ohio." The city is filled with people who have been here for generations AND it attracts people from all over the country. They're all New Yorkers so fuck you."

They are NOT all New Yorkers. Do not expect to move here from the Midwest and expect to be called a New Yorker. Maybe in the good ol' days of Koch, but ever since Giuliani everyone and their mother moved here.

You will never be a true New Yorker (especially those slumming it in Bushwick).

Nobody gives a crap but you, and for fuck certain nobody's impressed. Why don;t you tell it to your ma in Bayridge... or is it Chappaqua?

in my experience, people who actually grew up in NYC are generally way cooler (ie: friendlier, less pretentious) than any of the transplanted posers.

second, yes - as far as cities in the US go, NYC blows all of them away in terms of culture.

third, people move to NYC from all over the fucking world not just ohio and chicago.

NO NO NO

THE YEAH YEAH YEAHS? Karen O is from NEW JERSEY! FUCKING ENGLWOOD NEW JERSEY!! OK? I love Jay Reatard and I'm from Midwood. Fuck Williamsburg. That is not Brooklyn anymore. It's a fucking wasteland made up of people who are NOT new york natives. Assholes who got priced out of Manhattan, when they moved here and pretend to be from New York City. I'm fucking born and raised in Midwood. They might be giants are from New England? right? They have honorable mention because they lived in Williamsburg before all those sushi eating hipsters who "dj on the side" destroyed the fucking place, and TMBG's don't FRONT like they don't come from somewhere else. LIKE ENGLEWOOD NEW JERSEY! THE RICHEST TOWN IN NEW JERSEY! I hope Jay does not take a bunch of snarky american apparel wearing NON-New York Natives as "brooklyn" fuck that shit. It's probably easy to assume that Williamsburg is "brooklyn" if you don't hang with natives.

Don't lump all of "brooklyn" as a bunch of displaced douchebags whose scope of the fucking hood is the L train. We laugh at you morons and can't wait til your money runs out to move back to wherever the fuck you came from.

Beastie Boys are native. Fuck the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They suck suck suck. Fashionista garbage.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2009 1:48 PM

Why do y'all care so much about which bands/kinds of people are from Brooklyn? Also, why are so many people throwing around the word "fag"? And why are y'all so angry? Heal the world, make it a better place...for the entire human race.

Posted by CK | July 12, 2009 2:15 PM

the New York nativist idiots are worse than Jay Reatard, twice as ignorant and not half as clever (and Jay Reatard ain't clever.)

Only people who grew up in Brooklyn would think that's a real point of pride. Brooklyn was basically a backwater butt of jokes before it became an art / hipster mecca.

You should be psyched all those art kids elevated your hometown, before them being from Brooklyn was about as lame as being from Jersey.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2009 2:21 PM

Creative communities are as good as the collection of people who are drawn there. Brooklyn, NY happens to have the best draw of talented people coming from all over the country and the world, right now.

If maybe people in the rest of the US are too caught up in their old-fashioned New York resentment love/hate jealousy thing to appreciate that Brooklyn has got it going on, you should rest assured, the rest of the world does appreciate it.

Nothing said on this comment page on this blog amounts to anything, by the way. Interesting people with interesting things to say avoid this comment page like the plague. Just a bunch of uninformed outsiders trying to one up each other with the rudest zingers. Smart people ignore it.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2009 2:30 PM

have you ever tried to hang out in the "rest of Brooklyn"? pretty boring, pretty lame. Williamsburg / Bushwick / Bed Stuy is the only section that is isn't completely characterised by backwater urban hicks, misplaced suburban types, or disenfranchised poor people. Park Slope area may have some yuppies, but that's all it's got. Let's be honest, the Northern section is the only part you'd really want to hang out in.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2009 2:35 PM

Pains show was excellently not-boring. And pretty sure I saw Gibby Haynes there, who makes Jay Reatard look as boring as the fucking Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2009 2:36 PM

Staten Island < Surburban parts of Queens < the Bronx < non hipster parts of Brooklyn < any part of Manhattan < ethnic neighborhoods in Queens < Hipster parts of Brooklyn

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2009 2:38 PM

Jay Reatard is probably responsible for 90% of the "fag" and "faggot" comment on here. Like a lot of minor league famous people, he spends tons of time anonymously talking about himself on the internet. He's also a gay man who's in the closet, and he calls people "fags" and says juvenile rude shit in general about gay people all the time to hide it. It's kinda sad.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2009 2:48 PM

"Brooklyn was basically a backwater butt of jokes before it became an art / hipster mecca"

Proof? Please state your sources.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2009 3:16 PM

Brooklyn used to be right up there with New Jersey

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2009 3:22 PM

Slagging off anyone is great for publicity. It's basically how Oasis and Blur became so popular in the '90s in the UK - because of their press and tendency to slag each other off. Their music certainly wasn't good, but it got them each attention.

This stunt by Reatard has manifested at P4K, Stereogum, and this place, and each one of the comments here simply reinforce my statement.

If you think this guy's a douchebag then ignore it, really, you're just giving him more publicity. It's great for the BV, P4K, and Stereogums of the world because it attracts readers. P4K arguably wasn't the biggest online source for music until it started handing out 0.0 as a rating here and there. The current wave of mediocre ratings don't do a hell of a lot for their readership.

And for the record I lived in NYC for a while and can attest that authentic New Yorkers are some of the nicest, kindest, most genuine people I ever met. It was all the transplants from the coasts and the mid-west who were jackoffs. They're not true New Yorkers nor are about 99.9% of the bands who were aforementioned as "New York bands".

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2009 4:18 PM
