MGMT, Kuroma & Suckers in Prospect Park - pics & video
photos by Natasha Ryan
Zen: stumble into MGMT bringing it live(!) while walking the hound. Brooklyn has a great soundtrack. - Doug Moore

MGMT, Suckers, and Kuroma played a big Brooklyn show together last night in Prospect Park (7/1). I listened to most of it while hanging out in the grass from outside the black, heavily guarded, tall, not-see-through fence (which was behind a 2nd, smaller fence which had lots of security guards behind it (aka people between the two fences) (there were also a LOT of police around).
The highlight of the show for me was at the very end when MGMT (a band who I generally don't like... especially live... but last night I thought sounded ok... lots of people having fun also = good...) started playing "Kids" and, as the crowd could be heard erupting in cheer on the inside, a huge dance party broke out in the street behind the bandshell. Nobody could see what was going on inside, but that didn't stop everyone from getting down.
There were lots of people taking video of the people dancing. Please post it if you were one of them. More pictures from the inside, and some other videos, below...

I like how the singer ditched his hippie garb for a cooler vibe, but the fans are still dressing like idiots! He must be laughing on the inside.

i enjoyed the show from outside the wall.
those fireworks that led to the encore were interesting.
after admiring them, 10 cop cars/vans, and a platoon of cops started running towards the lake with search-lights. perhaps they weren't part of the planned entertainment for the evening

peace, love, and MGMT.

The fireworks were not part of the official show. Technically speaking they break the sound restriction rules. The organizers were having a fit about it. Its pretty likely that the band knew about/encouraged it.

This was my first MGMT show so I have some questions about their performance. 1) Why did they end the show a new tune that nobody knew and was slow? Just because they acknowledged that it was an "anticlimax" doesn't make it a good decision.
2) Is it just me or did the lead guitarist do everything for the band? He's not even part of the offical band and he's the only one that I saw really displaying music skills other than Andrew's vocals. He was playing lead guitar, percussion, keyboard, backup vocals, and keyboard. Ben hardly moved and it made me wonder who actually writes their music.
In general, I think it was a solid show for a band that only has one album. It was great to see the crowd get into it, especially for Kids.

best MGMT show I have ever seen, however they suck as bad as anything that ever sucked soooo..... meh.
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2009 1:58 PM
MGMT completely faked Kids and fucked up mid-song. We all noticed it, it was really horrible.
Posted by DG | July 2, 2009 2:14 PM
suckers were the best part of the show hands down.
Posted by suckers fan | July 2, 2009 2:17 PM
i agree that suckers were the best. mgmt is not the best live band. but they are fun.
Posted by anonymous | July 2, 2009 2:19 PM
that guitar solo on Kids is so LOL worthy... doesn't fit in with the song at all
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2009 2:38 PM
That second video sums it up perfectly, except that it does not include cameras or iPhones blocking the line of sight.
I love the album. I won't be seeing them live again.

1:48, they write the music. they didn't hire those guys in the touring bands until last year or whatever.
man we should have a comparison picture of what the lead singer looked like at mccarren pool last year vs. this show. he cleans up nicely.

I love all of you hipper-than-thou MGMT haters. You've been ragging on MGMT non-stop for the past 2 years and they just keep getting bigger and bigger and bigger all across the globe. Guess you must know more than Beck, Radiohead, and McCartney, all of whom have chosen to work with MGMT. Look in the mirror..if you're so talented and smart why are you still living in your pathetic little ratholes nastily envying those who actually succeed in life? L-O-S-E-R-S
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2009 3:27 PM
I agree with the majority of what 3:27 said, aside from the fact that obviously Beck, McCartney et al see MGMT as a conduit through which many many more millions of dollars can be made.
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2009 3:33 PM
MGMT are really not that bad of a band, it's just the fans that are really annoying.
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2009 4:08 PM
THEY DONT EVEN PLAY INSTRUMENTS.
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2009 4:16 PM
mgmt is big with moms and tweens
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2009 4:42 PM
Uh, when exactly did Radiohead "work with" MGMT? Sharing a bill at a festival or something?
And what's the point of putting a fence up to keep people from looking into a sold out show? They didn't do that for David Byrne, and it wasn't like people weren't gonna buy tickets to MGMT because that fence was there...seems like a waste of effort and a bad message to be sending people who wanted to see the show but weren't right on the trigger when tickets went on sale.

anon @ 4:16
this is my #1 problem with this band. for their "hit" song they ditch their fucking instruments and strut around!
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2009 5:14 PM
too bad standing nudes had to breakup for this
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2009 5:22 PM
I absolutely love Oracular Spectacular but this band underwhelms live. Their whole organization knows it too.
Too bad..A lot of potential with that album.

Maybe all the talented, genius musicians posting anti-MGMT sentiments could advertise their next show on this forum and we can compare.
Oh no, that's right you prefer be a cliche Brooklyn vegan contributor who is full of self-awareness and hot air.
You can't hate someone because they're now popular. I didn't like the crowd there either but the band still has talent. 'Cool' or not.

what was the fucking song. If you dont like mgmt, just ignore them. stop adding to the hype by hating. Any promo is good promo. I met a bunch of people that had just heard about them a week or so ago. For those that didn't go to the concert, they played a bunch of shit off their "new album" and it kinda sucked. But what was the last song, the jimi cover or tribute, iono. If the lead signer, andrew or w/e the fuck his name is can do girls just wanna have fun with a vocoder on halloween I think they could have done a tribute to MJ.......then agagin.
