Bring on the hate.

this song is great

When I'm gone? My guess is within the next 6 months.

Caught the VGirls out in Tucson a few months ago. The new songs sounded really strong then -- a good sign of new music to come.
And I don't know which is more stupid - the typical hate posts or the posts that try to bait the haters.
Posted by drewo | July 14, 2009 2:30 PM
I don't know who's more stupid--the people who post here or the people who complain about the posts. Me? I'm filled with self-hatred. And I have zero opinion about Vivian Girls.

Seen them several times and each time was great - especially the Bowery show where they traded up intsruments. Chatted up the bassist at MHOW once too and she couldn't have been nicer.
That being said, rumor has it that America Ferrera replaced Kickball Katy at the Tuscon show, MF Doom stylee.

I like this song, they've always been great.
Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2009 2:45 PM
the hate is unnecessary, really. these girls are just having fun playing some guitars and drums and writing songs and shit. no one's getting hurt. let them do their thing. i think it's great that they're even DOING anything in the first place, instead of wanting to start a band and write songs, they're actually doing it. you don't have to like them, but give them a LITTLE respect.

anyone that likes this, wont in a few years when they get older. FACT
Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2009 2:51 PM
Listened to the whole song....couldn't understand a single word they were "singing".
To the kids who think this is music: I think the fluoride in the water is finally starting to take effect.
The blond is cute though. ;)
Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2009 3:02 PM
wow, "these kids today" comments. yeah with their long hair and crazy bell bottom pants! they don't know what music is! i could hardly hear what these dames were a singing. back in my day, we had real singers, like frank sinatra and kurt cobain and you could understand every word.

" I think the fluoride in the water is finally starting to take effect."
...Good one, altacocker!

Another week on Brooklynvegan, yet another shockingly predictable post about the Vivian Girls. Yawn.
Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2009 3:20 PM
They have such an awful attitude towards musicians if you watch/read their interviews. They really aren't in the proper status to make such awful comments either, their music barely makes it among the mediocrity of other bands.
Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2009 3:20 PM
Yeah, you can really judge their attitudes on all musicians based on a 1 minute clip of a video interview.

Please let this "lo-lo-lo-fi" phase of indie rock end.

never met a vivian girls fan? Where are they? I'm 32, are they just a decade younger then me? Who the fuck likes this shit?
Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2009 3:51 PM
WHAts with all the misogynist comments??!? We make our own beats fuckers!! no man behind our music.
Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2009 3:55 PM
3:51, i'm a vivian girls fan. i'm 29. their music is great.

this ""lo-lo-lo-fi" phase of indie rock" is MAKING HISTORY

will you sit around and miss me when i'm gone?
Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2009 4:14 PM
I feel like Phil Spector when I listen to them.
Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2009 5:07 PM
i'm 29 and also a fan of the vivian girls, they jam and it's fun. they're talented, good spirited, beautiful young ladies.
Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2009 5:12 PM
the MAKING HISTORY guy is ENTERTAINING HIMSELF alone
Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2009 5:34 PM
If 3 dudes were making the exact same music or even if they were still girls but not "cute and trendy", no one would give a shit. The music isn't absolutely terrible but it isn't very good either. They sure do know how to shmoosh around with much better bands though (Abe Vigoda, Sonic Youth, etc.)

I would go as far as to say that a good deal of Vivian Girls fans are late-20s/early-30s, the sort of people who remember the glory days of K records, and the last time lo-fi was fashionable.
Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2009 5:51 PM
Um ok, so Vivian Girls "Everything Goes Wrong."
The reason that I like this record so much, uh, aside from the fact that it's amazing is, um, I feel like it was kind of overlooked when it actually came out and now it's like this absolute classic record. But, uh, when it was actually reviewed, when it came out, it really didn't do very...I mean it did well, but it didn't do extremely well. Rolling Stone at the time gave it like..I think 2 out of 5 stars or something like that. And then when they re-released it they said it was 5 out of 5 stars, when they did the next review. But it was just a very important record in my formidable years and, um, it's a classic pop record

i agree with this. i think that many of the criticisms being lobbed at the vivian girls stem from many newcomers' inexperience with diy music in general. the post-pitchfork era of indie rock has created some strange beasts. many people instead want to hear slicker/more polished bands such as feist or the arcade fire or what have you and look down upon--or simply don't understand--where bands like vivian girls, for example, may be coming from.
a sense of history is important.

i know it's been said before a hundred times, but look no further than bands like black tambourine, the shop assistants, action painting, chin chin, meat whiplash, early creation records stuff and other bands from indie rock's history to understand what the vivian girls are doing. i can certainly understand how, with an absence of that context, this band may seem lazy or lame or strange to people. but it helps to educate one's self.
Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2009 8:27 PM
there's nothing amazing about fancy production or having orchestras back up your pop songs. in fact 90% of the time that leads to far more cliched music than what bands like vivian girls are able to pull off.
there's energy and realistic emotion in their songs that you can't find in slicker indie rock stuff.

The only thing more predictably boring than the Vivian Girls themselves are the comments on here anytime Brooklynvegan posts something about them (which is about every other day).
Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2009 9:47 PM
your post is actually heaps more boring, 9:47
Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2009 9:48 PM
I never said my comment was excluded, 9:48. And neither is yours.

Yes, like the PR intern/scenester apologists who act like it's hard to "get" their ridiculously rudimentary sound without a BA in Twee Studies. Bad band. Not musicians. Living the dream on daddy's money in Williamsburg. Don't deserve attention. End of story.

and where oh where do you get this info about the girls' personal finances, 10:35?
you pulled it out of your snooty little ass, presumably.

i think 10:35's favorite band is wilco

patrick ewing= greatest center ever?
Posted by john starks | July 15, 2009 1:03 AM
I'm not ashamed to admit that I've had many detailed conversations about Space Jam, and how the aliens put together the worst possible team for the situation. They took the skills of a joke of a center, three power forwards, and a 5'3" point guard. They also had no bench, meaning they had to avoid foul trouble at all costs.
How would you possibly coach a team with Shawn Bradley at center, Patrick Ewing at power forward, Larry Johnson at small forward, Charles Barkley at shooting guard, and Mugsy Bogues at the point? If you don't double team Jordan with Barkley and Johnson he's going to score every time. Presumably this leaves Bugs open, and you just know he has a killer outside shot. On top of this, Taz has to be good for like 15 points and 12 rebounds, right? He'd be banging bodies with Ewing (Who has to stay out of foul trouble for lack of any bench) all night. And it doesn't matter who you have at center. They're dropping 20 on Bradley no problem.

The drummer would play better if she just lost some weight. You can't play drums if you've got a big gut.

That's what they said about Stanley Roberts.

512, I'm glad you support the Viv Girls, but using comments like 'beautiful' when I can't remember the last time a male-dominated band was called 'handsome' is entering misogynist territory.

wilco might be boring old fucks but at least they don't try to have an underground image while their management shoves them down the throats of every indie music fan every five minutes
Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2009 10:09 AM
I always think its weird when people go on and on about how much they dislike a band. If I don't like something, I just don't listen to it and move on, but some people just love to talk about how much they think this or that sucks. Therefore, I'm here to say I love this song and can't stop listening to it! I liked Vivian Girls debut lp well enough, but everything they've released since then I've been completely hooked on.. that moped girls/death single and now this. Can't wait for the new album!!
Posted by luc | July 15, 2009 1:35 PM
plain & simple, the new record is really good!
