Pains of Being Pure at Heart @ Bell House in March (more by Chris La Putt)
Pains of Being Pure at Heart

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart headline a free show at South Street Seaport in NYC tonight (7/10). Zaza and Ribbons open. Zaza member Danny Taylor has done production work for Pains. Zaza member Jennifer Fraser used to be in The Warlocks. Ribbons, like Zaza, is a Brooklyn based duo - not to be confused with Ribbons aka 'jherek bischoff' who has played in XIU XIU, The Dead Science and Parenthetical Girls.

Last week the Seaport Music series kicked off with a July 3rd Here We Go Magic and Bachelorette show.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 11:25 AM

god these guys suck live

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 11:39 AM

Have they gotten rid of that chick on keyboards yet?? She brings NOTHING to the band.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 11:40 AM

The pains of BEING BORING AT HEART! See what I did there?

Posted by jay reatard's twitter | July 10, 2009 11:40 AM

what time is this?

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 11:42 AM

Set Times:

7:00 - Jump into the river cuz you actually considered going to this.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 11:43 AM

in which annals of HISTORY will this band be?

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 11:45 AM

Sometime you wonder how a random, generic band can get so popular all of a sudden. Not only do they suck live, they suck on record.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 11:47 AM

who is this idiot who keeps posting "HISTORY" in every post. you are a pest.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 11:51 AM

I've seen them live, they are not that special. I don't even know how they got such a large gig, were there no other, better bands available? Seems like all their fans are 15 year olds!

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 11:51 AM

"Sometime you wonder how a random, generic band can get so popular all of a sudden. Not only do they suck live, they suck on record."

True dat! Same with Vivian Girls and Vampire Weekend.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 11:51 AM

Good lord, I was just about to say "Vampire Weekend", you've totally beaten me to it. I think VW set the standard for "random, generic band getting popular". Next stop, live on Letterman, then, mediocrity!

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 11:55 AM

jesus christ its free, who cares if they suck, honestly, id watch jimmy buffet take a shit at SSSP for free too...

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 11:58 AM

I'd pay to watch Jimmy Buffet take a shit, actually.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 11:59 AM

wow. why are so many of the posters on this site so hateful? perhaps all of you who are so negative should spend your time making your own music if it's so easy. any coward can be a critic and say nasty things.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 12:00 PM

Sorry to derail the hate, any idea what time these shows go on until?

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 12:01 PM

any idea what time they'll go on?

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 12:06 PM

Vampire Weekend is catchy and has distinct melodies. I wouldn't lump them in with the overhyped generic lo-fi buzz bands

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 12:07 PM

I'd pay to watch Jimmy Buffet take a shit, actually.

2nd that

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 12:08 PM

wow, all the negative comments make me want to go more.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 12:10 PM

Are you being facetious 12:07?

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 12:11 PM

Not only does this band suck but they also believe their own ridiculous hype more than even the most gullible fan. There was an interview a few months ago where they were ragging on the songwriting skills of a couple of bands who are their superiors in all ways. Complete fucking douchebags who make entirely shitty and forgettable music. They'll be back working in Staples in another 18 months.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 12:15 PM

12:07 is right. at least VW has some ideas, and ability to play live. TPOBPAH (did i really just type that?) are bloody awful.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 12:16 PM

TPOBPAH

Just funny to think about.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 12:18 PM

No, 12:11. Vampire Weekend has a defined pop sound with distinctive melodies. Whether you think they're generic or not is irrelevant to the fact that they have a proven mainstream sound and appeal, which I feel is quite opposite of the Pains, and all the other ho-hum lo-fi brooklyn bands.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 12:21 PM

I think the point of having them compared to Vampire Weekend isn't so much as the music being anything similar to each other, it was more of comparing the fact that both bands had a meteoric rise in popularity in a short time for apparently no reason.

And no, talent isn't the reason, c'mon, there are better bands!

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 12:21 PM

"TPOBPAH

Just funny to think about."

hahahahalolozzz that is funny!

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 12:23 PM

what time do pains go on?

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 12:23 PM

they will probably go on around 8:30-9:00ish

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 12:28 PM

12:15 do you have a link to that?

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 12:28 PM

Pains of Being Pure at Heart > Dirty Projectors

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 12:33 PM

Ribbons 6, ZAZA 7, Pains 8 pm

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 12:36 PM

Maybe people would hate them less if they were playing smaller venues more suited to their musical stature? You don't play the Cake Shop one month and then sell out the Bowery Ballroom the next. That just stinks of hype.

I also wish people would stop comparing them to the Jesus & Mary Chain. That is so lazy. The JAMC were pioneers, TPOBPAH, sorry, not so much.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:02 PM

you insolent fools. jesus and mary chain were doing their version of American rock music from the fucking 1960's. They did not invent reverb, echo,or distortion. You people compare all these new bands to the JAMC because you clearly do not know about any other potential musical reference points.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:11 PM

Stop slacking off and get back to work!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:14 PM

this community saddens me.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:16 PM

"Have they gotten rid of that chick on keyboards yet?? She brings NOTHING to the band."

Actually, I think she probably brought most of the publicity for this band, or maybe had the right industry contacts. Peggy (the chick on keyboards) is/was a talking head on NY Noise so she must know some people.

I would also guess that she is probably a big factor as to why they are even (kinda) popular or getting semi-decent shows in the first place.

Lastly, nothing makes indie boys pay attention to a band more effectively than a token Asian girl.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:18 PM

yesh, the pains are more original than most BV commenters in any case. BV Commenter Newsflash: the pains apparently sound like jamc and vampire weekend suxorz (i'm still confused how that even got to be a topic of debate in this post).

at least reatard was punny.

The Pains of Being Unoriginal at Making Music

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:27 PM

"They did not invent reverb, echo,or distortion."

That's true, but it's what you DO with it that matters. That was the point. JAMC did things with it that were new and influential to this day. Or at least they were trying to sterilize you with the sheer volume.

TPOBPAH, trying to, I don't know, bore people to death with their sheer boringness.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:30 PM

"Actually, I think she probably brought most of the publicity for this band, or maybe had the right industry contacts. Peggy (the chick on keyboards) is/was a talking head on NY Noise so she must know some people."

See, it's all about knowing people, not talent. All you need to do is been in the "scene" and whine to your industry friends to put your band on the bill for certain events and voila! People with actual talent have no chance with people like these around.

"Lastly, nothing makes indie boys pay attention to a band more effectively than a token Asian girl."

At least be hot for f*ck's sake! She looks like a muppet!

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:34 PM

we can debate how they got popular but the fact of the matter is that they make boring unoriginal music and they are terrible live. it's just weird.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:44 PM

more like ANALS of HISTORY

AMIRITE?

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:47 PM

"Stop slacking off and get back to work!!"

Ha! Nice one. everyone knows the only people who post are transplants from the midwest, live in Williamsburg and have their Mommy and Daddy pay their bills. I on the other hand, make $185,000 a year and am a digital online supervisor at a major ad agency in NYC. Yeah, I just wrote that.

It pays to be filthy rich...

Kaaaaching!

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:52 PM

blame pitchfork for their popularity

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2009 1:53 PM

pretty sure Peggy is loaded and pretty much bought her way into the band.
