a shot from the 1st Pool Party (last week) (more by Bao Nguyen)
Pool Party

Chances of rain aside, the free show prospects for this weekend are amazing. Tonight/Friday its the South Street Seaport (with Superchunk and Versus), Saturday is the Siren Festival in Coney Island, and Sunday brings Dirty Projectors, Magnolia Electric Co, and Crystal Antlers (not White Denim) to the Williamsburg Waterfront Pool Party.

Alternatively, Saturday also offers the the African Festival in Prospect Park, and Q-Tip and friends at Central Park's Summerstage.

Video of Magnolia Electric Co performing live (recently) (including one with The Avett Brothers), below...

Is the seaport rain or shine? It doesn't say on their website....

On the Seaport website it says DJs at 6, bands at 7 for all of the shows.

when it rains they pause the show. its only supposed to be a passing t-storm so you should be ok, just hide under the overhang or the under pass on east side HW

Has anyone seen any of the Versus reunion shows? I thought they were one of the best live indie bands circa 1998-1999 but haven't seen them in years.

I saw Versus at mercury lounge a few weeks ago. They are still as solid and rocking as they were back in the day.

the national played in the rain at the seaport a couple years ago.

superchunk plays at 8pm.

superchunk has never let me down live. last time i saw them was in detroit, they opened with detroit has a skyline acoustic and closed with an amped up version. good times.

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 7:06 PM

So, having now seen the Superchunk show and thinking it was awesome, I'd like to know which record of theirs to get. Listened to the previews on emusic of some of the early stuff and nothing really grabbed me.

12:10 is correct.

Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2009 1:21 AM

Thanks for the video, 12:33. Sure was a fun show. Sticky as can be though.

all though most people prefer the very early superchunk, "here's where the strings come in" has always been my favorite. i always liked "indoor living" a lot too - i don't think they played anything from it last night though.

"So, having now seen the Superchunk show and thinking it was awesome, I'd like to know which record of theirs to get. Listened to the previews on emusic of some of the early stuff and nothing really grabbed me."

ON THE MOUTH is one of the best records ever in my opinion. My 2nd favorite Superchunk record is Foolish.

Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2009 10:38 PM

I'd also recommend "Tossing Seeds (Singles 89-91)" - as the title suggests it is a collection of Superchunk's early singles including "Slack Mother***er."

ALL Superchunk is good
