The Dead Weather
The Dead Weather

People (including one very small child) waited in line over 12 hours outside "Third Man Records" aka the Envoy Gallery at 131 Chrystie Street on the LES in NYC for a chance to get in to see Jack White's new band The Dead Weather play a free show at noon today (7/16). Ends up, the band didn't play in the pop-up store, but right downstairs in the bar called Home Sweet Home (which not long ago hosted that Sonic Youth 'Eternal' party).

Inside the yellow store people can buy Dead Weather merchandise (including their album Horehound that was released this week) from the one and only Matt Pinfield and his WRXP co-host Leslie Fram. Downstairs, the band which features The Kills' Alison Mosshart on vocals played for about 30 minutes with one encore to the 175-or-so people that jammed into the hot and sweaty basement. Jack played drums and sang on one song, and in usual Jack White style, everyone associated with the band, even the roadies, were well dressed. Ryan said the band sounded great, and he couldn't think of a better place to catch the band than a dive bar like Home Sweet Home...

...which isn't saying much for the much, much larger venue the band is playing tonight (7/16) and tomorrow (7/17). The Screaming Females open both NYC shows at Terminal 5. More pictures from the Third Man Records in-store, below...

Um ok, so Meg White.

The reason that I like this drummer so much, uh, aside from the fact that she's amazing is, um, I feel like she was kind of overlooked when she actually came out and now she's like this absolute classic drummer. But, uh, when she was actually reviewed, when she came out, she really didn't do very...I mean she did well, but she didn't do extremely well. Rolling Stone at the time gave her like..I think 2 out of 5 stars or something like that. And then when she re-released it they said she was 5 out of 5 stars, when they did the next review. But she was just a very important drummer in my formidable years and, um, she's a classic pop drummer.

jack kind of looks like glenn danzig nowadays.

Camping last night and the show today was true bliss. Great staff and security. Some of the most helpful and genuinely nice people I have ever met. It was a great night and afternoon. Thank you everyone!

Camping out to see a band that released one record a couple days ago. What the hell is wrong with this picture?

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 8:21 PM

dont really care about this band but those pics look great. must of been jampacked down there.

Posted by freddie mercury | July 16, 2009 8:30 PM

Does anyone know exactly what vinyl they are selling and if they have anything left that I can't find at other record stores?

Also, were the prices cheaper than other stores for the new record?

Basically, any reason to go by tomorrow if all i care about is buying records?

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 8:39 PM

crackerjack photography to be sure...

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 8:48 PM

ummm how does jack look like a tool? you cant even really see him in the photos

MEHrchandising the hell out of this band

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 9:34 PM

So after waiting outside from a few hours, the show was pretty disappointing. The bar was in a long narrow room with the band all the way in the back. Only about 20 or 30 people could actually see the band. The rest were just packed in looking at the back of heads and raised cameras.

However, they are definitely a good live band... much much better than the recorded material which wasn't that great.

A large chunk of the people waiting for the show seemed like they were waiting to see the white stripes. Guys with mini guitars were playing riffs from stripes songs with a few people singing along. People were wearing stripes shirts and brought along posters hoping for jack to sign. I understand this is the primary fan base for the Dead Weather but still weird.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 9:39 PM

Agreed with 9:27. Great shots.

I may give their album a try, but those two songs I've heard have not been very inviting.

Posted by dee | July 16, 2009 9:41 PM

who are all these people? how on earth can this many people care about such a shit band?

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 10:10 PM

that Mosshart chick is fucking unbearable. she used to be in this crappy pop punk band Discount. she's doing better stuff now but seriously, bland fashionista waif shit compared to the REAL THING (PJ Harvey wannabe).

lots of pissed off scalpers outside t5. could not sell tix for $10. people wanted them for free.

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 2:07 AM

Wasn't it kinda warm for long sleeves and leather jackets?
You see blues players back 20 30 years ago in Chicago,Memphis, or elsewhere in the south wore the same clothes a lot because they didnt own much and were taken advantage of with what they were paid on albums or live performances.

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 2:11 AM

It's because they're, like, ROCK STARS MANNNNN.

Fuck that shit.

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 2:27 AM

Any one know if they have White Stripes vinyl for sale? How much?

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 8:38 AM

Anyone know if they had colored LP of Dead Weather for sale last night? What kind of merch did they have?

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 8:43 AM

there was limited white stripes vinyl at the store,, some as much as $250,, some only 30,, most of it was gone w/ in the hour yesterday of the store opening.

God damnit - I understand that we are in a recession, but doesn't anyone fucking work? Who the hell has 12 hours to stand in line? God get a life...

Also Jack White = big coke head. Anyone see him at the Black Lips gig at Maxwell's a few years back...

Anyone know what time they come on @ terminal 5?

Posted by J | July 17, 2009 10:40 AM

screaming females didn't come on until about 9 and played a pretty good set, about 45minutes. i would say the dead weather came on around 10. but T5 really sucks- it's so hard to see no matter where you are. so if you get there too late, you will have a heard time seeing the stage

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 10:45 AM

"...T5 really sucks..."

Yep, you pretty much summed it up right there.

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 10:50 AM

saw them at the bowery... now that was a super show...

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 11:12 AM

They came on more like 10:30 and ended 11:30, if they actually played for over 60 minutes I will be shocked. The show got better as the night progressed. The highlight for sure was the last song of the set before the encore when Jack White picked up the guitar (for only one song) and sang it with Alison M. That was true ROCK and ROLL and the genius of Jack White. Another highlight was So Far from your Weapon, Alison "plays" a box Bo Diddley type guitar and the song essentially is Wang Dang Doodle, but it was very well done. 3rd highlight was the Buffalo song. But this band is all about White and Alison, but it's really Jack White, he truly is a rock and roller, all else is padding. They don't let the other members (especially the guitarist) solo or let loose at all. And please play some covers or Kills, White Stripes material, <60 minutes is not acceptable.
Overall it was fine, but where it goes from here I don't know and can't envision anything.

Posted by rescueblues | July 17, 2009 11:31 AM

It's always all about Jack White. He's the quintessential rock premadonna.

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 11:37 AM

sorry, you're right- they came on more like 10:30... didn't get home until 3am, my mind is working properly yet

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 11:39 AM

haha- ISN'T working properly yet... see what i mean?

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 11:39 AM

hahahahah "premadonna"

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 12:01 PM

Isn't he technically post-Madonna? Essentially Like A Virgin on the rock scene?

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 12:17 PM

"T5 really sucks- it's so hard to see no matter where you are. so if you get there too late, you will have a heard time seeing the stage"

T5 does suck. The sound is terrible and the location is lousy. But I don't understand the complaints about the site lines. I never had a problem. Then again, I only stick to the floor. Even from the back of the floor, I don't have any problems seeing since the stage is high.

Of course, I am tall. If you are complaining because you are short, then your problem is really with Mother Nature and not T5.

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 12:22 PM

The Dead Weather was awesome. i thought that Jack and Allison had a lot of sexual chemistry going on during the concert. Or was that my wishful thinking?

T5 sucks and is a waste of space as a venue. Been going there only because my favorite bands go there.

The Screaming Females were okay but that set was way too long as an opener.

To the girl who sat on whomever's shoulders, you are an inconsiderate bitch. i'm glad people threw shit at you. This isn't an outdoor concert. People couldn't see to begin with and you made it harder for them. You suck at life.

Posted by JR | July 17, 2009 12:42 PM

Thank you so much for the amazing pictures! I was about 4 rows back, but couldn't see a thing. Thank you for showing me what I was missing, it's good to have a picture to go with all of that pounding sound in my head. Although it is a little painful to know I was so close, and yet so far away.

Posted by rachel | July 17, 2009 12:43 PM

"...i thought that Jack and Allison had a lot of sexual chemistry going on during the concert..."

I just assumed he's been pounding that ass since they met. Jack doesn't strike me as too much of a family man.

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 12:47 PM

That pre-Madonna stage erection in Marseilles was killer.

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 1:06 PM

LINE OF THE DAY

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 1:32 PM

so I was at the terminal 5 show last night and I aMEH a Jack White fan sometimes. He is a good guitarist and good drummer... Not like the fucking diety people make him out to be but he was very cool in his own right with early white stripes.

While last night I was much more excited to see Screaming Females who rule... I wasn't dissappointed with the dead weather music.. better live than what little i have heard from the CD

WHAT I HAD FORGOTTEN was that because Jack White kinda is the Michael Jackson at least popularity wise was that the crowd at the show was full of tons of gym ratt, wall street closet mancrush types!!!

REALLY Screaming Females could not get through 1 song before some drunk buff dumb shit was yelling WE LOVE YOU JACK WHITE

it was odd... the guy has just become to popular regardless if he is cool or not - also he is Sweeny Todd - but maybe Jonny Depp just ripped off of Jack white like he did Keith Richards?!?!

Posted by Fuck you | July 17, 2009 3:39 PM

3:39. . . seriously, one of drunken gym rats actually flat out grabbed my crotch while waiting on line for the bar. He kept saying, "oh sorry,I thought you were my friend." Oh? That's okay then, my friends and I are always grabbing each other's genitals. . . .

Overall though the crowd wasn't THAT bad and I thought the show was better than the last Racontuers one I saw . . .

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 3:51 PM

Enough with the bashing of Terminal 5.
Every time a show is reviewed and/or photos are posted there are so many complaints about the venue in the comments. Enough already. Move on.

Posted by enough with the T5 bashing | July 17, 2009 4:10 PM

T5 sucks

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 4:38 PM

did someone seriously just compare JW to MJ? let's be real here folks

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 4:51 PM

Seconded. T5 is the worst venue in NYC, hands down.

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 4:53 PM

yeah, but them cheeseburger empanadas... i don't want a damn cookie or any coffee shop crap when i'm fixin to rock.

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 5:50 PM

Ugh, as usual all the negative comments are ridiculous and unfounded.

Posted by Pox | July 17, 2009 6:15 PM

everytime i read comments from a brooklynvegan post i lose my faith and hope in humanity. wow @ the smearing. jack white is a coke head? what the fuck?

screaming females sucked last night, they didn't win a soul over. they have a long way to go. a friend of mine said it best.

why are people pretending that a well known musician starting a new band will not create some sort of buzz? I'm more than certain that if your favorite musician started a new band that a good portion of the people on the line will be fans of their prior works. This is the equivalent of being surprised that nirvana fans were showing up to the first Foo Fighters tours. There is nothing worse than new york and brooklyn hipsters, not very bright, quick to bash everything. If jack was still an indie kid's favorite little secret, you'd be seeing a lot more praise. Merchandising is a problem now? How else are bands going to create revenue when everyone steals music. Only Brooklyn Vegan commentors assume roadies are working probono and aren't on some kind of payroll. They are so used to stealing music and getting everything free the concept of overhead escapes them. Mogwai came out with a musical box that they sell on tours, i guess that makese them assholes? Jack wants to sell records, why does that surprise anyone? He wants his label to be successful. who doesnt want their endeavors to make money? What the fuck is the alternative? Giving out music for free to appease fickle shithead brooklyn hipsters who are quick to bash you a week after they praised you? Oh and commentor at 9:48 AM, yes we are in a recession, people are not working, that is one of the things that happens during a recesson, an increase in spare time. Or how about requesting a day off in advance to make it out to this? Some people have ultra flexible jobs that aren't necessarily 9-5. Why do you need to be told this?

Posted by favian | July 17, 2009 6:33 PM

Now can I say something?

I like the Dead Weather record . . . because it reminds me of some of Boss Hog's records. And they haven't put anything out in some time.

I what Jon Spencer thinks of all of this.

Jon?

Posted by Curious in Queens | July 17, 2009 10:15 PM

jack white will never be as short as glenn danzig.

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 10:20 PM

glenn?

Mommy?

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2009 10:24 PM

danzig got knocked the fuck out (youtube it) and jack white knocked out that guy from the von bondies. all bets on jack in the ring. oh and danzig is the shit but i dont think he could take jack at all.

Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2009 12:24 AM

"screaming females sucked last night, they didn't win a soul over. they have a long way to go. a friend of mine said it best."

The best rock'n'roll is found at house shows, seriously. SF are optimal in this kind of environment, maybe they were having an off-day or the sound fucked them up, but they've been awesome every time i've seen them. "a long way to go" to what? schmaltzy nu-blooze bullshit like the Dead Weather?

Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2009 12:56 AM

i agree they have a long way to go. that chick's guitar solos are a bunch of nonsense. i'm glad she's trying to do something with guitar solos, but the solos are weak and the screaming reminds me of lame early to mid 90s indie/college rock. some people will only go to shows if the capacity of the club is < 50 because THAT MAKES IT MORE REAL. gimme a break. i do appreciate their showmanship though, i like that the chick dressed up and the drummer did too to a degree, but seeing the bassist wear jeans and an old navy shirt. Seems like he cares less about presentation than his bandmates. I havent counted this band out, i applaud DIY bands, but if they were having an off night, then i saw them on an off night.

Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2009 2:22 PM

if Screaming Females were having an off night they were probably put off by the douchebags in the audience like those crotch grabbing muscle heads.

I absolutely guarantee you Screaming Females will still be around when this Dead Weather record and tour is a barely remembered footnote in Jack Whites bio, a trivia question if you will...

Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2009 6:12 PM

this concert came sorta like a blast from a sawed off shot gun, it was way way fast and hard and brutal-- but in the best way. tons of sexual chemistry too, the highlight, predictably, was 'will there be enough water'

whoever the girl with black hair who dressed in all black the first night and in a grey shirt the second night was the best person i ever saw'd.

it was fun seeing how many people who went the first night went the second night. guess it proves what an experience seeing the show was. me friend and i didn't get into the concert the second night though.

funny thing is, we were late for getting tix for the second show because we were waiting/saw jack white coming out of 30 rock where he did the jimmy f. show.

<3 jack

Posted by michael | July 18, 2009 6:49 PM

lol @ blaming the screaming females having an off night on the audience. everyone gave them a chance.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2009 4:59 AM

Its amazing to me that the 'screaming females' dickriders on bv are slamming the dead weather even though dead weather are the reason why they opening on this tour. Jack Lawrence handpicked them after seeing them play a gig in nashville. If not for that, they'd be playing shitty shows in Rutgers right this summer or in a basement of someone's home for beer money.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2009 5:09 AM

Everybody sucks... sometimes

Posted by Michael Stipe | July 19, 2009 9:20 AM

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2009 11:38 AM

Screaming Females started a little slow, and yeah maybe the set would have worked better cut shorter, but even they still impressed me and seemingly pretty much everyone in my general vicinity. they're not reinventing the wheel as a rock power trio and i doubt they'd claim to be, but they're as amazing a live band as there is coming down the pike.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2009 5:42 PM

it was a different type of music, that screaming females..

firstly, she really really liked to scream. though she screamed well, it really put me off and i think a lot of other people, at least around me, agreed.

second her guitar solos were so antiseptic and technical. it reminded me of somebody playing guitar hero it was just noise. no soul.

does anyone know that blues song that came on through the speakers before jack et all took the stage?

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2009 7:00 PM

word @ soulless guitar solos

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2009 9:42 PM

Screaming Females were the best part of the night. They fucking killed. The Dead Weather put on a great show though, they are way better band like then on the album.

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2009 1:30 AM

Forever my queen (pentagram cover)
Hang you from the heavens
So far from your weapon
Rocking horse
No hassle night
Treat me like your mother

I dont remember correctly but i think this was the setlist. I know the first and last song are right, but the middle might be rearranged.
