Fireworks dancing
Last week in dance I got a late start. I'm not sure what it was, but I couldn't get myself out and on a dancefloor until Sunday. Once that finally happened I could not have been happier...Justin Martin absolutely killed it at the BKLYN Yard as did Alex from Tokyo later that day at the Rivington Hotel. More on each of their awesome sets later. For now, here's where you can get down at the start of this lovely 4th of July weekend:

Thursday (7/2):

Don't let the name fool you, the Wurst Boat Party is actually going to be awesome. Wurst Edits Wurst Music Co. head, My Cousin Roy is going to be deejaying along with Brennan Green whose track "My First House" will be the first released under the new label. Check out some mixes from when each of them were on Beats In Space just over a month ago. Party info below:

DANCE

Hopefully on Saturday (7/4) the weather will cooperate and give us a Fourth of July full of great outdoor dancing! Saturday afternoon P.S.1 kicks off this summer's edition of their Warm Up music series with Reagenz featuring Jonah Sharp & Move D (extended live set), and a DJ set by Daniel Bell.

Reagenz...dreamy brand of ambient electronica is riddled with analog interjections and jazzy idiosyncrasy.

...DJ Daniel Bell brings minimalist influences to the turntables. Steve Reich and Philip Glass meet Chicago House to create a pulsing, bleeping, and blipping techno baby.

Warm Up Admission
On Warm Up Saturdays, from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the admission fee to P.S.1 and Warm Up is $10.00. Included in this price is access to all exhibitions and to Warm Up. We do not offer special discounts for seniors or students on Warm Up Saturdays. Cash only.

More info on Warm Up, including where to buy advanced tickets and free admission for MoMA members and L.I.C. residents can be found here.

From P.S.1 there's no need to go far if you want to keep dancing. Just a little walk away from the museum you'll find the Beach Party at Water Taxi Beach, complete with dancefloor, excellent Manhattan views, and great deejays including residents Justin Carter, DJ Probus, and Eamon Harkin, plus excellent guests like this week's: Robert Hood. Sunday (7/5):

Justin Martin @ Sunday Best @ the BKLYN Yard - June 28, 2009
DANCE

I never used to like Sundays. For as long as I can remember the feeling of dread of what was to come on Monday would totally ruin the day for me...until now. Sunday is, no exaggeration, my new favorite day of the week because of Sunday Best and Été d'Amour.

Last weekend was the perfect example of why. I woke up late, got absolutely nothing done, but made it to the BKLYN Yard with plenty of time to eat some delicious Asia Dogs and enjoy the sunshine before hitting the floor to a very deep and techy, yet surprisingly upbeat set (possibly my favorite of the series thus far) from Justin Martin.

This week expect music that is a great blend of electronic beats with a jazzy/soulful sound from Losoul. Full info below:

address 400 Carroll St between Bond and Nevins, Brooklyn
if it rains (lets hope it doesn't!) The Bell House (around the corner)
dates Every Sunday from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend
food Tacos, Huaraches and other Latin American delicacies
booze You have to be 21 to drink it, but we'll be selling it at the bar
ages All ages
time 3p - 9p
cover $10 // $8 before 4pm with rsvp OR $8 in advance
RSVP rsvp@sundaynestnyc.com
Alex From Tokyo @ Été d'Amour @ the Rivington Hotel - June 28, 2009
DANCE

After witnessing Justin Martin make everyone lose it on the floor right up until he blew out the soundsystem at the Yard (just minutes before the usual 9pm end of the party), there was still much more dancing to be done at Été d'Amour at the Rivington Hotel. Upon arriving, Alex from Tokyo was already behind the decks and a healthy group of people were moving in front of him pretty much non-stop until the end. His set was a great blend of some of his own stuff, house, disco, and everything/anything super dance-able. It was another one of the dj better sets I've witnessed this year. Info on this week's Été d'Amour featuring Todd Terry below:

DANCE

RSVP here and check the out the EANY group for info on future parties.

Here's what's happening heading into next week:

Monday (7/6)
- Francois K is deejaying Deep Space at Cielo.
- Benji B is at the Hudson Hotel. You must RSVP.

Wednesday (7/1)
- People Don't Dance No More continue their Annex residency with special guest Alex From Tokyo (He killed it at Été d'Amour last weekend - go see him!!).

DANCE

- Kevin Hedge (Blaze Imprints) and Louie Vega deejay Roots at Cielo.

DANCE

Have a great Fourth of July weekend (hopefully full of dancing)! I'm kind of annoyed the fireworks have been moved to the Westside. In case you don't get to see any, check out some below from the International Fireworks Competition in Montreal two years ago. The video doesn't really do them justice - best I've ever seen:

I’m on board the Tune Yards bandwagon. They blew my mind in Montreal and won over the whole crowd
