Tune Yards @ MHOW 2/4 (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)
Tune Yards

Tune Yards (or tUnE yArDs as its usually written) is the one-woman band of Merrill Garbus. Her debut record BiRd-BrAiNs, previously out on Marriage Record, is being re-released by 4AD, first as a limited-edition screen-printed CD on August 18th, then to wider release later in the year. "Sunlight," a track from that record, is posted above.

As Tune Yards, she tends to perform solo -- she also plays as part of Sister Suvi. Tune Yards will be performing at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday, September 5th with (opening for) Phosphorescent (also a one-person band, Matthew Houck, though live he usually has company). Tickets go on sale Friday, July 17th at noon.

A track from Phosphorescent's latest, To Willie, is also posted above. Their most recent NYC shows took place in Prospect Park and in Bruar Falls.

Check out a video of Merill at Trophy Bar during the Northside Festival (with Zach Condon of Beirut, a band that Tune Yards has opened for, and who are also on 4AD, in the audience) and all tour dates, below...

Um ok, so tUnE yArDs' "BiRd-BrAiNs."

The reason that I like this record so much, uh, aside from the fact that it's amazing is, um, I feel like it was kind of overlooked when it actually came out and now it's like this absolute classic record. But, uh, when it was actually reviewed, when it came out, it really didn't do very...I mean it did well, but it didn't do extremely well. Rolling Stone at the time gave it like..I think 2 out of 5 stars or something like that. And then when they re-released it they said it was 5 out of 5 stars, when they did the next review. But it was just a very important record in my formidable years and, um, it's a classic pop record.

Do we really need more sensitive butches making this kind of racket? We already have two Indigo Girls and an Ani Difranco.

I shouldn't, but I'm enjoying the bro who just quotes wavves on each thread....

Wonder how Long I'll find it funny

why are you pointing out that the guy from beirut is in the audience in this video?

Congrats to Merrill! She really deserves it!

why do people think she's a "butch"? is it because she doesn't wear lipstick? i haven't met anyone more womanly than her. she has the personality of a fertility goddess.

ps. indigo girls and ani difranco are both unbearably boring IMHO.

Merill is a goddess.

@ 1:10 PM
have you heard this woman's voice. monstrous, spine-tinglingly beautiful voice. whether you like her music or not she is dripping with talent. i love her. and talent like this doesn't appear very often.

i think pitchfork gave her a 6. fuckin' idiots!

and just because she is not photogenic doesn't mean she's a fuckin' lesbian.

this woman is great! this album is spotty but so was patti smith's horses. but the great songs are that great. and she is a great performer...
