Posted by carrie mundane | July 16, 2009 1:54 AM

was expecting tears on his cast followed by JAMC-level riot. wavves fails to deliver.

Uhh...so thus was the first time i saw wavves live. I had high standards bc I think his recorded work is real dope. For a first show post "major meltdown" I felt reAlly proud bc he owned and killed it. Seemed like a maturing, yet crippled musician. Hope he continues his resurgNce!!!

worst shameless friend pretending to be fan impersonation ever.

Let's fast forward to 2012 when the world ends and everyone's forgotten about this guy already for two years.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 3:21 AM

He was fine, and that is it. FINE. Not good, not bad, not okay; just fine. He played longer than his usual 25 to 30 minutes.

He also hid behind heavy, heavy reverb and vocal distortion, which honestly made it better than the last time I saw him.

Overall: I should have been more stoned.

Posted by Gaytrain Jones | July 16, 2009 3:36 AM

eat a dick.

he was awesome

"I felt reAlly proud bc he owned and killed it."

nice.

and to make it even funnier, i think this guy was being serious.

I heard this band was good so I just showed up to be seen. Nothing to text my friends during the show about. I scanned the crowd for people I might know, celebs, or other band members from bands that are cool. Nada. Not the scene I payed over face value for.

I tried to understand the music. Really I did. Maybe if I had listened to the actual album or seen a couple videos on youtube I might have "got it" but no deal. I decided to head to the bar to drink and chat it up with my buds about all the actual cool shows we had gone to. Dude got mad because I tipped him $1 for 8 bud lights. Not like he mixed any drinks. We blew that place quick.

Posted by Blake | July 16, 2009 8:09 AM

I don't think Wavves can maintain any sort of "buzz" without doing some stupid shit at his shows. His music is fucking terrible so unless he starts crying or flipping out I wouldn't pay to see him.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 8:11 AM

What happened to his wrist?

Kiddin...

Let me split the difference here. I don't think anyone is confusing Wavves with a technically sophisticated band playing intricate arrangements (but you know, Phish is touring again, if technical musicianship is your thing). It's a lo-fi band. It is what it is. Is he an amazing musician with songs that will stand the test of time? No.

But, are his songs pretty fun to listen to? In my opinion yes. And as far as the show itself, I'm not sure what more you can ask for. The guy goes out there in a cast and fucking rocks the crowd. If it's not your scene or your kind of music, then don't see Wavves again. But there were a lot of kids there to be entertained, and judging by the mayhem going on up front, I'd say they were. And, considering what had happened with the whole "meltdown", this was a return to form. I'm happy for the band and hope they continue to grow.

You guys really like to put me on the spot

Um ok, so Wavves at Bowery Ballroom.

The reason that I like this record so much, uh, aside from the fact that it's amazing is, um, I feel like it was kind of overlooked when it actually came out and now it's like this absolute classic record. But, uh, when it was actually reviewed, when it came out, it really didn't do very...I mean it did well, but it didn't do extremely well. Rolling Stone at the time gave it like..I think 2 out of 5 stars or something like that. And then when they re-released it they said it was 5 out of 5 stars, when they did the next review. But it was just a very important record in my formidable years and, um, it's a classic pop record.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 8:21 AM

was it sold out?

"sober, meltdown-free"

BORING.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 10:09 AM

Seriously, the whole "technical musicianship" thing is so overrated. there are tons of bands that have "pro gear, pro attitude" and "chops."

most of those bands pretty much suck. Bands like Wavves are fun and cool because they write immediate, engaging songs that don't give a shit if there are only 3 chords in them, or otherwise not "complex compositions."

i dunno-- i can see if people hate on them for some stuff, but the whole "not pro enough" angle really rubs me the wrong way.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 10:13 AM

10:13, your comment really rubs me the wrong way because like, it's retarded.

Bands like Wavvvvves are not "fun and cool." They are schlock for kids who don't know any better, like yourself.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 10:16 AM

The dude can't play the guitar and sing in time live. He's lucky to have competent drummers.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 10:47 AM

it has nothing to do with "technical musicianship." wavves can't write songs.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 10:49 AM

I dont care if you can shred 6 different wavves NO POINT ffuuuuuuuuck

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 10:59 AM

it was a fun show, wavves was great. it felt a bit tense at times because he was under the gun to put on a good show after everything that's happened, but that's not a surprise. what is surprising is that no one has mentioned his wrist in regards to the quality of the performance. if you consider that, which is significant, he killed it, the motherfucker could only strum like a bad robot, so yeah, kudos to him.

i'm not a huge wavves fan, the kid's been propped up by pitchfork for the better part of a year, but a lot of his stuff is damn catchy. it's july, just hand me some bourbon and give me a good hook, i don't need to analyze it too much.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 11:05 AM

Back off Warchild.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 11:05 AM

heard there was a sweet rainbow after his set

Posted by summerofchavez | July 16, 2009 11:17 AM

Woods and Real Estate were both excellent.

Woods had one guy sprawled out stage center, playing electronics, singing into modified headphones and occassionally exhaling puffs of smoke.

Headlining the Bowery should be next for the Woods-men.

Posted by drewo | July 16, 2009 11:29 AM

Wavves was funn (haw haw, nvr heard that one b4!).

but..

yall forgetting how fucking good Woods were last night. they killed it.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 11:31 AM

@ 11:31 yeah, I had forgotten to mention Woods, too. It was a great set from them. For me, at least, much more fun live than listening to their record, which I'm going to go back and give another listen....

Woods are opening for Dungen on 8/14, along with what I'm sure will be a bunch of other local gigs...

You Guys are all Wankers! It was a fun show Popo played hard, real estate did there thang ,Woods was beautifully creepy ,and wavves , though i'm not that big into him sounded better than the last time i saw him. the crowd is what made it a good wavves set. Stage dives, some sort of gentle mosh pit, and give aways i think some dood got wavve's bulls hat.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 12:34 PM

dood gave the hat back at the end of the show, lame

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 1:25 PM

The guy being able to play with a broken wrist is simply a testament to how pedestrian the songs are.

GARBAGE.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 1:57 PM

1:57 is all bent outta shape that dude didn't bomb like he hoped.

have you considered, 1:57, that you're just a prick?

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2009 2:15 PM

Woods was cool. But hey dooshbag...get off the fucking floor and get a haircut. You idiot. Having a hairstyle based on how you setup your equipment makes you A#1 Asshat material.

Woods rocks mah world

Having never played guitar with a cast, I can only assume it's tenuous. That said new songs were surprisingly good, the vibe pretty laid back outside of the non-stop mosh pit, the meltdown should give the Wavves project a new focus and hella character. Worse things can happen than to have the larger indie community intensely focused on your next output.

Also backflip stagediver on last song ftw, someone should post vid

Neither did I. It was my good taste and sense of decency that deterred me.

Wasting time either making a huge deal about or overly disparaging a band like Wavves is feeding precisely into the hype/hipster/scene attitude which turns things like the current lo-fi trend into an epidemic.

The best thing for it, I think, is just to enjoy the music if you want to( personally I think Wavves are an inoffensive example of the lo-fi "style" taken to its logical extreme, though "So Bored" is fun) and don't let these preconceived notions about the greatness of all those Smell bands affect the way they are experienced.

Of course, given the way things are, this is absolutely impossible, so I'll just ignore bands like Wavves until they go away, which is soon enough. It's a testament to the dangers of the so-called "Shitgaze" scene that better bands like No Age get lumped into the same pile as Wavves.
