We’re at the beginning of another stacked weekend of dancing that goes right on through to next week. No time to waste…here’s what’s going on, starting with Saturday (7/18):

Right now the forecast looks clear for Saturday afternoon & evening which is perfect if you want to head to P.S.1‘s third Warm Up party of the season. While last weekend’s line-up was a bit more disco-oriented with Arthur’s Landing & Danny Wang (with some more experimental work from MV Carbon and Aki Onda), this weekend’s features acts each with their own, very different sound:

Affiliated with the art zine by the same name, SPANK is a sassy/sweaty/neon/rainbow/hot/mess on the dancefloor.

“Francofreaks” Cheveu play an explosive brand of disjointed electro punk that alternatingly grinds and harmonizes, thrashes and pleads.

Xeno and Oaklander are a Brooklyn-based duo featuring the minimal sounds of multi-instrumentalists Liz Wendelbo and Sean McBride. Playing exclusively analog synths and instruments, the two blur the genres of coldwave, post-punk and synthpop, producing a rare breed of haunting, stripped-down beats that a computer could never create.

DJ Pieter, who hosts weekly Wierd parties and runs Wierd Records, spins minimal synth sounds and dark but danceable beats. This veteran of the New York obscuro-electro scene brings a unique sound to the tables.

Warm Up Admission
On Warm Up Saturdays, from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the admission fee to P.S.1 and Warm Up is $10.00. Included in this price is access to all exhibitions and to Warm Up. We do not offer special discounts for seniors or students on Warm Up Saturdays. Cash only.

More info on Warm Up, including where to buy advanced tickets and free admission for MoMA members and L.I.C. residents can be found here.

Lopazz
DANCE

I’ve been regretting not looking at my calendar before agreeing to head out of town Saturday…mainly because Lopazz is deejaying the Beach Party at Water Taxi Beach. While I’m not too familiar with this German producer, his release history on a few of my favorite labels – Get Physical, !K7, and Output makes me confident his set will be good on Saturday…that, the vocals, and the analog synths:

Kyle Hall @ Sunday Best @ the BKLYN Yard – July 12, 2009 (more by David Ferino at Resident Advisor)
DANCE

Sunday (7/19), things really heat up…as they did last week at Sunday Best. Kyle Hall was absolutely awesome. I’m assuming he went on somewhere around 7 and by the time I got to the BKLYN Yard around 8 the dancefloor was completely packed. It was easily the most people I have seen dancing there this summer. From what I could see it was an all vinyl set, and Kyle handled the records really well…the mixes, levels, and manipulation were all super on point. He was dancing the entire time, smiling, and working the crowd into an absolute frenzy with some very hard-hiting techno and house. It was a great set, period, and this 17 year-old’s set went way beyond his years. I expect big things for Kyle in the future. If you missed it, Kyle’s set is available for download on the Sunday Best website, plus some new mixes from the past couple of weeks.

I:Cube
DANCE

It seems like almost every week I find myself thinking Sunday Best just can’t get any better, but each guest deejay ups the ante. This week, should be no exception as the legendary I:Cube will be bringing some of the French house sound he was a part of creating, plus who knows what else, to the Brooklyn party on the canal. Not to be missed! Check out his mix from earlier this week on Beats In Space and get ready to head to the BKLYN Yard!

Some exciting news for this week: Underworld are doing a North American tour in August, coinciding with the release of the full Underworld back catalog on iTunes and the creation of an iPhone application. Unfortunately for those of us in New York, it doesn’t look like they are stopping here 🙁 Either keep your fingers crossed that they add some dates, start planning your road trip, or stream their Oakland show live to your iPhone on August 7th. Tour dates & details below:

Underworld – North American Tour Dates

08/06 – The Joint – Las Vegas, NV
08/07 – Fox Oakland Theater – Oakland, CA
08/08 – Hardfest – Los Angeles, CA
08/11 – Kool Haus – Toronto, Canada
08/12 – Metropolis – Montreal, Canada
08/14 – Muelle Panamericano – San Juan, Puerto Rico

…Underworld, in partnership with cutting edge developer iZotope, bring you an amazing iPhone iDrum application containing some of the most famous tunes from Underworld’s juke box of techno classics.

Featuring tracks from all Underworld’s albums and including “Born Slippy”, “Two Months Off” and “Cowgirl” the application allows the user to remix, re-sequence and reconstruct 12 Underworld tunes and also features a piece created by the band themselves exclusively for the application.

With specially commissioned artwork from Tomato’s John Warwicker the application is the closest you’ll get to dropping the kick drum on “Born Slippy” without getting on stage with the guys yourself. In celebration, Underworld are giving away a special live version of “Born Slippy” recorded at Brixton Academy and have announced North American dates this August, including (technology permitting!) the worlds first FREE live audio-visual broadcast to the iPhone on Friday August 7th 2009 as Underworld continue their series of incredible live broadcasts at The Fox Oakland Theater.

Direct from the Fox Theatre in Oakland and accessible through Underworldlive.com check out the bands legendary show featuring some of the biggest dance hits of the last 15 years and maybe some future hits for 2010.

This is completely free and all you need is a computer with Quick Time installed on a broadband connection or an iPhone on a wi-fi connection running iPhone 3.0 or higher.

Download “Born Slippy” Live at Brixton Academy at the top of this post & have a great Week in Dance!
