An afternoon of performances and film featuring established and emerging contemporary African artists working in music, film, and literature, in celebration of the exhibition Yinka Shonibare MBE. Highlights includes the film This Is My Africa (Zina Saro-Wiwa, UK/Nigeria, 2008, 50 minutes), about the Africa that exists in the hearts and minds of native and non-native individuals; a dramatized reading of contemporary texts presented by the Chinua Achebe Center for African Literature and Languages; a gallery talk by celebrated performer and fashion designer Wunmi; as well as live music performances in the Sculpture Garden, including Rwandese electro-pop artist Iyadede and Sierra Leone's reggae and hiphop ambassadors, Bajah and the Dry Eye Crew.Free music tonight includes a Celebrate Brooklyn show with Kailash Kher and Electro Morocco at Prospect Park Bandshell; Jerry Rivera and N'Klabe play the Central Park Summerstage.

The Old American Can Factory hosts both Rooftop Films with Stars Like Fleas and a show with Michael Gira and (Wooden) Wand (put on by the Issue Project Room).
John Wesley Harding brings his band the English UK to The Bell House for a show with Megan Reilly.
The 25th Anniversary Party for the Minutemen's Double Nickels on the Dime is at Bowery Poetry Club. Musical guests include Mike Watt and Richard Hell (who's re-releasing one of his '80s LP).
