All Points West 2009 - Day 3

"After a soggy Friday and sunny Saturday, the thunderstorms returned for the third and last day of All Points West, this time resulting in major delays and canceled sets for the festival held at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, NJ. But after the rain cleared and mercifully stayed away, organizers hustled to get the schedule back on track, culminating in a dazzler of a headlining set by British rockers Coldplay.

Sunday's line-up, scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. in the comedy tent and 2 p.m. on the music stages, was pushed back several hours due to severe storms that hit the area midday. Fans who arrived early were turned away at the gates, and it wasn't until just before 4 p.m. that ticket holders were invited to line up at the festival entrance for an even longer wait for admission. Comedians Todd Barry, Christian Finnegan and Janeane Garofalo, originally slated for 45-minute sets at the Queen of the Valley tent, were rushed through with 10 minutes each to make way for the musical acts that followed them. "I might do a tour of entirely rained-out festivals," said Barry, "it's big money for not a lot of work at all."

Some sets were canceled altogether--indie rockers Steel Train and New Jersey punk band the Gaslight Anthem, scheduled to take the main Blue Comet stage in the afternoon, were scrapped to allow later bands to perform at their scheduled times." [Billboard]

As you may have heard, Coldplay's Sunday night set included covers of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" and Beastie Boys' "Fight For Your Right". Jay-Z covered "No Sleep Till Brooklyn on Friday.

MGMT played against Coldplay on Sunday, and Echo and The Bunnymen instead opened for Coldplay on the main stage (with Courtney Love watching in the wings). Akron/Family, Silversun Pickups, Mogwai, Lykke Li, Elbow, the Black Keys, and others also played sets on the shortened, very wet day. More pictures, and the two Coldplay cover videos, and some setlists, below....

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2009 12:16 PM

12:14 why are you such a miserable human being?

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2009 12:24 PM

It seemed like every band played for 50 minutes which blows. I didn't go because the line up blew. cold play sucks and it was confirmed by the Beastie Boy cover. Just horrible.

"Elbow > every other band at APW."

my experience there agrees.

I'm surprised they were able to get any one to stick around after they cut Janeane Garafalo's set.

Major Downgrade: La Roux Major Upgrade: Lykke Li

should've stayed at Queens of the Valley tent for Ghostland Observatory.

People in mud ran to see Coldplay's set and the also kids in the mud ran to see MGMT's set. Truly a mud experience. A Mud dancing event, we shall call it at that. Families w/ strollers ended up being stuck in one sticky/muddy area. Saw a couple of pregnant women w/ their husbands resting on benches. Parked golf carts were useless. Took almost an hour to get to your parking spot. We walked barefoot most of the time.

to address any previous or lingering complaints about price/security/beer cages: this is a makeshift event with a huge perimeter consisting of a flimsy 6' fence and scant security. you complacent kids need your solutions spoon fed to you, so here it is - for the athletic, jump a fence, save a c-note. for the lazy drunks - get your buddy to hold back and throw ypu a backpack full of booze once inside. i rolled in sat + sun with a pint of rum and a fat spliff for each. 15 bands all tweeked out cost me $30 in shitty, cold food. fuck the lines, fuck the security and fuck the beer cage. dont just complaint, react.

anyone notice the NJDOC trucks and vehicles there? i'm guessing they got people who had to do community service to do cleanup.

i also saw a bunch of department of homeland security agents walking around! was there an unannounced terror threat? or was it just precautions because of location? curious.

anyway, the mud was fun! i just hope that thing growing on my still muddy foot falls off.

looks like la roux got la cum stuck in la hair

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2009 1:59 PM

reacting, complaining, good or bad. same thing. Just felt bad for families who went with their children/babies. The doors didn't open 'til 4 p.m. likely because of safety issues. And there are plenty of other events and free shows in and around the city that the whole family would've safely enjoyed. The sun was out and not much of a wind gust, just mud and germs...like a cesspool.

Thanks. You really had that shit "locked down".

One Day Like This

A phenomenal live band, IMO, and even better in a smaller venue. Seen them at Hiro Ballroom and Webster Hall, and it's always brilliant.

Thanks 2:54...seems like a short set though! Caught them at Webster last time too greta band!

memo to coldplay - change your clothes

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2009 3:23 PM

i stuck around for mgmt after black keys got done rockin out, hopin that all the pussies would head to coldplay. wrong i was, for the mgmt fans are a bunch of tweepop fairy white boys wearing ralph lauren bandanas tossing glowsticks every other song. gladly the girlies were mad cute, with their face paint, head feathers and short skirts (yum)....you shouldnt even be allowed to tour multiple continents on a single album. soooooo overrated.

The kids dad is a musician, and he is very very well cared for and loved. you are worrying about the wrong child in this case.
