"Bob Dylan was in Long Branch, about a two-hour drive south of New York City, on July 23 as part of a tour with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp that was to play at a baseball stadium in nearby Lakewood. A 24-year-old police officer apparently was unaware of who Dylan is and asked him for identification..." [AP]

since when does "asking for identification" constitute harassment?

I read that she knew who Bob Dylan was, but she didn't believe him at first when he said, "I'm Bob Dylan."

>since when does "asking for identification" constitute harassment?

when the motivating factor for such a police action is simply walking around minding your own business. that's harassment.

"Rock legend Bob Dylan was treated like a complete unknown by police in a New Jersey shore community when a resident called to report someone wandering around the neighborhood."

This is serious? This is completely serious?

the cop might be an idiot anyway, but don't be so sure YOU'd recognize bob dylan if you saw him walking down the street... probably looks like any other wrinkly unshaven homeless old man...

HARRASSED ? a citizen call the police dept to report someone on private property. the cops repond, do their job properly and respectfully and got Dylan out of the rain (gave him a ride to his resort hotel).

where is the problem? the young cop heard of bob dylan, but never expected the man in her town.

WHo's Bob Dylan? Now if it was Dan Deacon i'd think that officer would be crazy for not recognizing him.

Posted by Anonymous | August 16, 2009 10:39 PM

Mr. Narrator. This is Bob Dylan to me.

Posted by Anonymous | August 16, 2009 11:29 PM

His id says Robert Zimmerman. He's lucky he didnt get arrested for giving false information.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2009 2:38 AM

It's harassment because he was walking down the street when the cop stopped him. He was looking at a house that had a "for sale" sign in front of it and then walked away.

He wasn't welcome in a Latino neighborhood? It's OK with you if the cops put you in the backseat cage for taking a walk? We can't go for walks in this country anymore without traveling papers?

What do you think would have happened if he had said, "no, I don't think I want to go for a ride in your car"?

The house had a "for sale" sign. He looked and walked on. It was raining, so what?

I'm glad it was a young female officer and not some idiot, gung-ho power-tripper that responded. Otherwise, poor Bob would have been on his face for taking a walk.

who the fuck cares ...can we watch more cat videos MG

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2009 8:54 AM

Actually, Bob was casing the neighborhood in order to pull off a burglary after the show. Willie Nelson was going to drive the getaway car, and John Mellencamp was going to carry the heavy stuff... (Forgive me is someone has already made a similar joke. I don't have time to read all the comments)

Posted by MrThistle | August 17, 2009 1:35 PM

Wow, this officer is obviously a bully. To actually do her job? She should be strung up. How DARE she drive him back to his hotel. Have you ever seen such brutality?!?!

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2009 1:54 PM

Looking at poor neighborhoods. That sort of thing has implicated Bob before. Unfortunate.

Posted by Progressive | August 17, 2009 2:40 PM

Bob Dylan was not harassed so choose your words wisely. Don't make it what it wasn't. It was amicable and resolved. He even said he completely understood why she was following procedures and even asked for a ride back to the neighborhood once his identity was established.

Shame on you. Hack!

Dylan should've gone all Henry Louis Gates on her ass.
