Decemberists @ Newport Folk Festival 8/1 (more by Jim Brueckner)
Decemberists

"The Decemberists have gotten muscular lately, too. The onetime bookish Smiths acolytes have lately discovered the wonders of prog. On [the first day of Lollapalooza 2009] they performed their concept record The Hazards of Love in order, frontman Colin Meloy decked out in a suit and suspenders and co-vocalist Becky Stark -- playing the role of Margaret -- donning a wedding dress. Their set felt more like a theater piece than a concert, each number composed of varying movements. Their compositions bore traces of familiar folk tropes, but time and time again the group upended them. And isn't that the spirit of Lollapalooza? It's like pop music, only different." [Rolling Stone]
The Decemberists' "A Short Fazed Hovel" tour, which visited Radio City in June, will continue into the fall. As part of that, the band will play a show at NJ's Wellmont Theatre on September 21st. Tickets are still on sale.

While most of the shows on the tour, Wellmont included, feature a full performance of their latest record The Hazards of Love, the band has added a "By Request" evening "special lottery show" to take place September 19th show at NYC's Terminal 5. "The evening's selist will be 'by request', as selected by Decemberists fans. Voting instructions will be sent out to ticketholders soon."

"In homage to that totally awesome scene in Dragon Slayer, we Decemberists will perform a set that will be entirely left to the hands of fate -- we will draw songs from a lottery and dutifully play them, regardless of their quality or presence in our memory. Decemberists songs, naturally, but you do never know what bizarre cover songs or strange commands may end up in the pile."
Tickets for Terminal 5 are now on presale via MusicToday and go on AmEx presale today (Aug 19th) at 11am. General sale starts Friday, August 21st at noon.

Both shows, and many others on the tour, will feature special guest Laura Veirs & The Hall of Flames. All dates below...

Great idea but having the average joe vote doesn't help. They did this in Chicago and there was barley any deviation from a normal decemberists setlist.

yeah, the megafags... er fans... should have the right to pay $10 more and get 2 votes.

losers.

Jealous much 11:01 sorry Dan Deacon doesn't allow you to pick his setlist even though you are a megauber fan...

11:01 you need to get a life...is the highlight of your day slagging on every band? It is getting tiresome.

agreed with 10:57. The all request setlist was more normal then any setlist the band has picked.

Can you request that they don't play?

11:43...I'm with you..they don;t need to play O'Valencia at every show!

UPDATE... I just got an email saying that the Terminal 5 show will not in fact be "by request" as originally advertised, but by "Lottery".

"Someone actually jumped the gun before the concept was solid though, and it's going to be more of a lottery system to randomly choose the songs they play, it won't be a "by request" show like they just did in Chicago."

"We decided, in honor of the victims, that we'd play a show in New York City at Terminal 5 on that day, the 19th of September. But we thought we'd try to make it interesting: in homage to that totally awesome scene in Dragon Slayer, we Decemberists will perform a set that will be entirely left to the hands of fate -- we will draw songs from a lottery and dutifully play them, regardless of their quality or presence in our memory. Decemberists songs, naturally, but you do never know what bizarre cover songs or strange commands may end up in the pile."

sigh... post updated...

In honor of the victims of September 19th???

re: the victims. I guess i should have included the first paragraph too:

"We received an urgent missive from the boys at the Decemberists SubTerra Campaign Organizational Front (DSCOF) the other day, bringing to our attention that a glaring hole had appeared between the first and the third days of the "A Short Fazed Hovel" Tour 2009, Phase 3. Apparently we had booked a show that day on a scarcely populated atoll off the coast of northern Maine which had succumbed to a mysterious sneaker tsunami and had vanished into the Atlantic ocean, its population of hypersensitive palette-enhanced pygmies disappearing entirely with only a crate of artisanal cottage cheese remaining as a testament to their ancient society.

We decided, in honor of the victims...."
