Depeche Mode

"Of all the bright-eyed groups from the bushy-tailed class of 1982 British New Wavers, few would have picked Depeche Mode as the one still selling out multiple nights at Madison Square Garden 27 years down the road....

...And then there's Gahan. Though he's been forced to cancel some shows due to a bout with gastroenteritis and tearing a calf muscle onstage in Spain [...and cancer], he sashayed and posed and spun across the stage without a care in the world. His stage performance has been tweaked, just like Depeche Mode's music, all for the better.
Instead of picking up the mic stand and whirling like a dervish, Gahan now spins in moderation and he occasionally tangos with the stand or makes broad ballroom moves like he was training for "Dancing With the Stars." His vocals are different as well, giving a sweeter twist to "Wrong" and a broader snarl to "I Feel You," which opened as a blues number. He even threw some Michael Jackson-esque "hee-hee hees" into "Strangelove."
Yes, you read that right. Who knows what Depeche Mode will think of next?" [Newsday]

Peter Bjorn and John opened the show and then played a gig at Cake Shop after midnight. They do it again at MSG tonight (8/4). More pictures from last night (8/3), and the DM setlist, below....

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2009 3:08 PM

Who cares about Depeche Mode? Maybe the 50,000 people who are going to MSG to see them over these 2 days? Or the millions who have seen them for the last what, 29 years of their existence?

Arctic Monkeys... HAHAHAHAHA.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2009 3:10 PM

F Arctic Monkeys- unworthy of their own thread

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2009 3:10 PM

Are we related?

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2009 3:10 PM

I've always liked Depeche Mode, but, damn, Martin Gore looks like a trainwreck. Dude is not aging very gracefully at all...

I went last night as well. I'm old school, so would've much preferred more stuff off the first three albums (i.e., other than "Personal Jesus" and "I Feel You," get Gore OFF the guitar) but I certainly don't expect a group that's been doing their thing for 30 years to be playing sets full of songs they wrote when they were kids. Kudos to this band for breaking boundaries and still filling arenas.

Posted by blackhat | August 5, 2009 9:24 AM

Depeche Mode has to be right up there with the best!! They sold out massive soccer stadiums across Europe (I went to their show in Paris in June and was part of the 60,000+ fans in attendance) and they're selling out our basketball arenas in seconds flat (I went to last night's MSG show and not a single empty seat)! Please do NOT compare Arctic Monkeys with a legendary band such as DM. With over 100 Million albums sold worldwide, there's a reason DM will remain legends well beyond their living years!! Their music is just too unique and cool to deny!!

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2009 12:26 PM

Thank you for the great pictures, I was at the concert in Munich, Germany. I'm a fan of DM for 28 years now and have seen them a lot of times live, but they seem to get even better every time! SOTU is a great album, I think the best since Violator! THEY ARE THE GREATEST!!!

Posted by stahlinski | August 6, 2009 4:15 AM

Great concert! I was there, too bad not so close I could see Dave sweat! :) Dave still looking like a GOD!

I have to agree, Martin not aging gracefully.. facelift?

Posted by Marlina | August 6, 2009 5:29 PM

Martin looks his age, Dave looks younger than his age. Martin also probably spends a lot of time in the Santa Barbara sun. Anyway, who cares how he looks, he writes brilliant music and has the voice of an angel. Peter Gabriel looks a good ten years older than his age, but still has it live.

Posted by chris | August 6, 2009 6:19 PM

Thanks for putting up the pics. Unfortunately dm never tour australia, so we rely on youtube, blogs and the like for imagery and sounds. Thanks again.

Posted by Roger Kerr | August 6, 2009 7:46 PM

Anyone have any pictures from the 8/1/09 show at the Borgata in Atlantic City? I was there and my camera died before the show started!

Posted by Lori Hoffman | August 6, 2009 8:54 PM

Martin's hair looks awesome, and he sounds like an angel, an incredibly talanted guy. Love him forever.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2009 10:11 PM

I have pics from the Borgata... i was about five row behind.. Awesome concert. I can send them to u if u like..

Amazing pictures!!! Thanx for sharing them!

Posted by Ana.Soto | August 7, 2009 2:44 PM

arctic monkeys, who the hell is that?
Depeche Mode are the best. Been to Borgata on 08/01 and 2nd night in MSG. Fantasic show from the guys, though I didn't like the crowd so much neither in Borgata, nor in MSG. I always compare with European shows, where people sing like one:)

Posted by e. | August 7, 2009 11:37 PM

Seeing them at the Garden has been a dream after being a fan for 25+ yrs. It was definitely worth the wait!!! The show was beyond fantastic!!

And for the record, I'd walk a thousand miles barefoot over broken glass just to lick the sweat off Dave's and Martin's _____...considering all they've been through over the years, I think they both look pretty damn good!

Posted by Krista | August 8, 2009 1:48 AM

Depeche Mode is the greatest band ever, I still waiting for see them in Guadalajara, cant help it !! And the pics are great, thanks !!
