Erykah Badu

"Last night, the 38-year-old R&B oddity known as Erykah Badu performed on the 225-year-old New York oddity known as Governors Island. Both the artist (herself an island) and the island (itself art) brought to the show singular quirks and diva auras. The performer wore a top hat, the venue sand." [Time Out]

"Glad we came out here. Perfect day for this outdoor performance featuring Erykah Badu and Janelle Monae. We definitely recommend Governers island for all of you folks that want to snuggle up to a little bit of earth. It's a great escape and just a short ride on the water taxi from South Ferry. Make the trip." [Shermani Exchange]

"Here is the deal though. Badu live is an amazing thing. She is also sort of in her own world. That can be great. Or as one person Tweeted last night, "I love Erykah, but every song doesn't have to be the 10+ minute extra extended version, lol." There is a problem simultaneously with the venue--you need to take a boat to Governors Island, which is just down below the tip of Manhattan, and so you are trapped there, and if it is getting kind of late for you, you can't just sneak out, and so people were leaving in droves--and with Badu, who can roam off into five or six minutes of random effects-laden vocalizing. She took that show way down a few times. Which, since a lot of people were smoking a lot of pot, was probably pretty good for them!" [The Awl]

is that the napoleon dynamite dude carrying janelle to the stage?

Posted by strainingtosee | August 6, 2009 2:57 AM

2:13 it would be great when the arasbs get off all the jewish peoples land I agree!

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2009 7:26 AM

I agree with 7:26. The jewish people welcome arabs/muslims/palestineans with open arms in the Israel main land but the arabs/muslims/palestineans do not welcome the jewish people on any of their lands. When this happens life will be better for all.

What ever side you agree with most artist make comments without a handle on the situation. Not that I am qualified but I at least spent time in both Palestinean and Israeli land.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2009 7:55 AM

Well I've seen the movie, Speed, twice but that doesn't mean I know what it's like to ride on a bus in Israel.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2009 8:08 AM

Speed 2 though is on a boat..if you saw that twice than you are an idiot :)

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2009 8:11 AM

Speed 2, no keanu no good.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2009 8:20 AM

Than we are all in agreement 8:11 and 8:20! Case closed! :)

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2009 8:35 AM

No.....not really. The Speed and Speed 2 discussion and round table is still open.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2009 9:02 AM

So what do you like about Speed 2 9:02?

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2009 9:11 AM

I never saw Speed 2 because no Keanu was a deal breaker for me. I saw Speed and loved it.

The love the actor, Willem Dafoe, but was really upset that such a quality actor would be in such a movie, especially a sequel.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2009 9:16 AM

Keanu Reeves turned down the movie to go on tour with his band Dogstar.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2009 10:19 AM

Bad move that was or maybe not?

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2009 10:32 AM

the colonists welcomed the the native americans onto their new land, but the native americans didn't welcome the colonists onto their land. how ungrateful.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2009 1:13 PM

I agree with 7:26. The jewish people welcome arabs/muslims/palestineans with open arms in the Israel main land but the arabs/muslims/palestineans do not welcome the jewish people on any of their lands. When this happens life will be better for all.

????? Wrong again.
heard of Deir Yassin? The killing of unarmed Palestinians from the intial invasion taken their homes and turning them into Israeli govt buildings. You know, the Urgun Zionist fascist's that believe they are racially superior. They welcome palestinians by killing them, burning their farm land, fabricating that they are from Jordan and never farmed the desert, taken land from Egypt, and shooting Palestinians everyday from check point towers who are on their way to school or home for fun.
Is it fun to know that the one sided view you have is identical to George Bush and the fundamentalists? How much land are you taking also? What is the "greater zionist Israeli map for land.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2009 6:56 PM

Great 6:56. Give me an example from 1948. Got anything more current? Firing rockets at Israeli civilians is happening in 2009.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2009 8:39 AM

6:39 has a point. Also you don't see israeli terrorist sending their young children into arab terriotories making themselves into human bombs to kill as many innocent civilians as possible. That is sick!

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2009 8:51 AM

you know what's sick? keanu's acting in point break. oscar caliber.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2009 9:08 AM

Bill and Ted's is Keanu's best! Gnarly!

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2009 9:16 AM

i was always disappointed that keanu was not part of the tv show
