Grizzly Bear

The story of the day, Sunday, August 30th, would have been that, after an opening set by Beach House (who played after Vega) followed by a brief introduction by Senator Chuck Schumer, Grizzly Bear closed out the 2009 Pool Party season at the Williamsburg Waterfront with a beautiful 1+ hour set in front of the Manhattan skyline on a perfect Brooklyn day. Instead, Solange Knowles and her sister Beyonce who brought her husband Jay-Z decided to show up and watch Grizzly Bear from the soundboard. And that become the real topic of conversation for twitterers, texters, and the throngs of people walking toward Bedford around 7:30pm when the concert was over.

According to Schumer, he's going to fight to bring free concerts back to the same park next year. The status of that is currently unknown. It's possible JellyNYC may need to look for a new location for the free shows again. Maybe they should bring concerts back to McCarren Pool, or do they really think they're turning that space back into a swimming pool anytime soon?

More pictures and a full review of Sunday is coming soon HERE. In the meantime, check out some videos from the GB/BH/JZ show, and a few more pictures, below...

grizzly bear played an awesome and great set. it was perfect. jay-z and beyonce showing up kind of ruined it. people are too celebrity-obsessed. get over it.

p. diddy @ arctic monkeys, jay-z and beyonce @ grizzly bear. we get it. bv, now you're just free publicity for the blueprint 3

Amazing weather for the final pool party. Was hoping we'd get an acoustic Deep Blue Sea by the water. Asked Daniel afterward, but alas, no acoustic guitar. He suggested I start an a capella version. Ha... anyway, good show though the bass was sounding whack. Always sound problems at the pool parties.

Beach House is nice for a song or two. But a 40+ minute set - the songs kind of just all start to sound the same.

Posted by @willbah | August 31, 2009 2:56 AM

If you feel Jay-Z and Beyonce's enjoying the same music you do ruins an otherwise great show, you're worse than the celebrity-obsessed people you are criticizing.

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 3:10 AM

Yup. P Diddy at a rock show= Jay-Z and Beyoncé at a rock show.
When WILL they learn?!?! This is White music! How dare they enjoy it!
If the set was ruined by Jay-Z and Beyoncé's arrrival, is it their fault, or the celebrity obsessed crowd's?
I saw them enter, and yes, it was amusing. They are quite famous. But when I got in, I enjoyed the music transmitted from the stage by Grizzly Bear. I think it is nice that Jay-Z and Beyoncé enjoyed the set, like several other thousand people did.

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 3:13 AM

i didnt even know about jay-z and beyonce, but it didnt seem like people were really making a fuss about them. unfortunately, when p.diddy showed up at arctic monkeys, everyone kept focusing on him and it kind of ruined it, especially when he decided to come down to the floor right by the stage.

anyway, grizzly bear was AMAZING. I was disappointed with VEGA, not because they sounded bad, but because it seemed like they just played their CD and played over that. They had a bassist, drummer, and vocalist. So all they did was put the CD on, and play along with that, but all the guitar and keyboard parts (well, most of them) were just being played straight off a track.

Beach house was great. They were too loud for me, and it actually got uncomfortable at times, but if I had earplugs to reduce it down 20dB I would have loved them.

Grizzly Bear was just about perfect. I knew they would bring Victoria Legrand on stage, and I was ecstatic when they did. She sounded great, and it really made the song better compared to when the guys try to sing her part. She has such a beautiful voice, and she's beautiful.

Great set. Great summer at the JellyNYC pool parties. And it was great hearing chuck schumer saying that he supports these concerts and he wants even more!

I didn't see him myself, but wasn't Kanye West at Nine Inch Nails on the first night?

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 3:31 AM

Not that it affected the performance at all, but the group of people I was with definitely saw Daniel from GB snort a bunch of coke side-stage before the show. Like, a bunch of coke.

I still love their music, but that was kind of jarring.

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 3:38 AM

was this show crowded? Is this standing only or is there anywhere to sit at park?

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 3:51 AM

"the group of people I was with definitely saw Daniel from GB snort a bunch of coke side-stage before the show. Like, a bunch of coke."

Are you sure? Of all the Grizzly Bear members, Daniel seems like the happiest (not the most normal, just the happiest.), he doesn't seem (from looking at him and listening to his music) like the type to do coke, if it was any of them, I would expect that from Chris (the bassist), he always has a scary look on his face.

But maybe that's why Daniel's always so ecstatic? He's high on coke!

Are you sure he was snorting coke? Was this out in the open, or in the trailer?

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 3:53 AM

3:38 First of all, they have a trailer to do coke. Second of all, why would you do it outside when it would blow away. third of all-- shut up.

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 4:10 AM

hey look, i once let daniel snort a fat line of cola off my cock, but i don't go and brag about it on brooklyn vegan cuz kids are probably reading this! bageezus peeoples!

Posted by dildo | August 31, 2009 4:47 AM

while Vega didnt really seem that into it, they had just gotten ALL of their gear stolen last week out in california, so i'm sure that definitely impacted their set.

I second the notion that JellyNYC move these parties back to the McCarren Park Pool. The only work that has been done there is to redo the facade over the entryway and to build a skate park at the Bayard corner.

It was the best outdoor venue in the City!

Posted by Freepster | August 31, 2009 6:48 AM

Perfect way to close out the series. But, let's all find something to complain about because that's what we like to do.

jellynyc can't move the shows back to mccarren as much as everyone wants it to be back. it was a much better venue for the shows and although the waterfront was a nice venue, it never had the feel that mccarren did. i had a great time at the waterfront shows but nothing will ever beat the three years that they held at mccarren.

You hipsters complaning about everything! Jay-Z was born and raised in Brooklyn so shut up! He can be in Hipsterville if he wants to....

You guys coming from some Midwestern States should really go back and stay there.

Thank you.

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 9:12 AM

I have no problem with Jay-Z and Beyonce being there. Just don't know why anyone cares. Also, I have no idea why either of them are famous. Jay-Z raps like he needs to go to sleep.
Beyonce is one of the most pompous egotistical people on the planet. Her dancing is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen, yet the two of them sell tons of records. No accounting for taste. Need proof of the ridiculousness of Beyonce?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xia_gu356Pk
P.S. doing runs requires no vocal talent.

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 9:37 AM

Perfect weather, great day, not even too much of a hassle getting in. Grizzly Bear sounded great as expected - esp. "Ready, Able".

Chuck Shumer going down a line of hipsters giving high fives was unitentional comedy.

Jay-Z has repped Brooklyn from Day 1. I thought it was dope he came out for something like this. It's easy to call this a publicity stunt but I think he just secretly (not so?) has good taste in music. And B was looking right as expected...

My only legitimate complaint is that there was no AT&T (iPhone) service out there so I had a hard time reconnecting with people.

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 9:58 AM

The fact that 3:38pm saw Daniel from GB snorting coke bothers me and here's why: GB isn't the type of band you figure are hard partiers. No offense but they make really wussy pussy indie music. Coke isn't cool to begin with, but when you're in GB and think doing Coke makes you such a rock star, then you should check yourself into rehab for being delusional.

As for Jay-Z and Beyonce, they were there with her sister Solange, who is all about Twittering about Animal Collective and Of Montreal, so it doesn't surprise me.

Posted by Tweedie | August 31, 2009 10:11 AM

If Jay-Z and Beyonce weren't doing this solely for publicity, why was their SUV parked by the VIP entrance stage right, and then they walked in at the main entrance? They obviously wanted everyone to see them.

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 10:11 AM

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but the sunset behind Grizzly Bear was spectacular, and was made even sweeter when a bunch of seaplanes started landing and taking off in the Hudson while they played.

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 10:13 AM

@9:50.. hey idiot, why did you even stay if it was so "boring." You should've jumped into that deep blue river.

Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros - if you were at the Music Hall last night, you all knew where to be. Show was amazing!

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 10:25 AM

Great event through and through. I saw the sea planes too, very cool added bonus.

But I thought it was weird they didn't plan an encore, was this because of a curfew?

which i do - and get my fix there thank you very much next question

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 11:14 AM

great show, posted in a different section on this show, do NOT understand about the line? There was SO much room inside, no overcrowding AT all, don't know why they didn't let so many people in, i'd say easily could have let another 200-300 people in w/o making it crowded at all. feel bad for people who didn't get in, they got screwed by horrible organizing.

As for Jay Z/Beyonce, good for them. Yes, i'm sure they wanted to be 'seen' but maybe they actually like the band. It IS possible for black pop and rap stars to like rock music, isn't it?

Posted by brian roach | August 31, 2009 11:18 AM

GB dominated their set. The very electric On a Neck, On a Spit was by far the best of the day.

Anyone know Beach House's set? They sounded fantastic.

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 11:24 AM

10:10am, the person who first posted the story about Daniel doing coke seemed pretty sincere so I dunno, it sounds likely it happened. If its true, that's lame as hell. Just because you're a musician doesn't mean you need to play and dress the role.

Hey I know some pretty well known musicians that do coke and more that would really surprise a lot of you. It would disappoint me if Grizzly Bear was into it but it wouldn't be as far fetched as some of you think. It would just be sad.

Oh and I concur about the McCarren Pool as a better location but I know that can't happen.

And YES! I hate that I have no service on my iPhone there. I'm in freaking NYC!!

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 12:08 PM

@10:13 AM- You could see planes taking off and landing in the Hudson? The park where the show took place is called "EAST RIVER STATE PARK". The Hudson is on the West Side of Manhattan, and the East River is...get this....on The EAST SIDE of Manhattan. But yes, the sunset was fantastic. Sorry for busting your balls.

Posted by Sully Sullenberger | August 31, 2009 12:10 PM

everybody in Williamsburg used to do coke. Grizzly Bear are very much old school Williamsburg people. they probably do coke every once in awhile, still. maybe all the time, who knows.

really, who cares?

Posted by nunya | August 31, 2009 12:33 PM

that was some bad terrible planning. park (public!) had so much room - so many people held out on the street. why is there a capacity in a park? events in nyc have to relax.

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 12:34 PM

The pool is becoming a pool again. As a neighborhood oldtimer, I was there when I was a kid. Although I too thought the concerts were better at the pool, it was created as a pool for everyday use by the whole neighborhood, including little kids and old people, not for a certain number of summer Sundays for one small segment of the neighborhood, most of whom will - unlike us - eventually move back to Ohio. Or if they stay, they will be the first 40-year-olds to complain about the "younger generation's" music (and behavior) being crap compared to the real stuff in 2005-09. The park, whatever its many limitatons, has a nicer view and feels less claustrophobic than the pool. Neighborhood groups like Open Space Alliance and NAG are behind the pool project, which will also be used year-round with an all-purpose indoor facility.

Posted by anonymous | August 31, 2009 12:50 PM

This is great news! I'm high on cocaine every time I listen to Grizzly Bear. Now I feel an even stronger connection to the band. You guy's wouldn't understand...

I'm sorry but if that blog is really running with the story that Dan was doing coke based on an anonymous tip here and slight head movement to the right while playing, isn't that just taking the whole tabloiding of indie rock to a new level?

Posted by MK | August 31, 2009 1:15 PM

i looked at the line, then my girlfriend and i went to lunch and went home haha. that line was so dumb. they were like individually searching people with like one security dude. The line was tooooo long for that. Like they really needed to start shoveling people in there and start counting people in line to see about where capacity would reached so that people would know they werent going to have a chance to get in. I wish i had bought those VIP tix now! tried to buy em at the gate but no dice...

As for the dude doin coke....he's a person. people experiment with drugs.. doesnt mean he is lame or trying to put on some rockstar image. it just means he wanted to get high. I have never done a hard drug like coke but like if he wants to then why does that even matter...

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 1:17 PM

This is just ridiculous. Stop this whole coke BS. He's laughing at Bear during While You Wait because he is singing some of the lines like Michael MacDonald who's B-Side of this very song came out today.

You're pathetic with these desperate attempts. Get a life...

I 100% guarantee its manufactured bull.....

My god, some of you are idiots. Its beyond me how this conversation isn't talking about the show one bit. They played amazing!! Great band. Perfect way to end the summer. If you were also there, you're lucky!!

....and yes ANON @ 1:18....

You're right...he's laughing at the lyric that he sang like Michael Mac. He does it again before the breakdown as well.

Kinda funny actually. He's giving Michael Mac some props in a way.

Umm.. so I wrote the post on bigasslens that people are now saying suggests coke use. For the record, we NEVER mentioned any drugs by name and clearly are just kidding around as Daniel looked goofball in that frame and I decided to make a joke - hyperbolic JFK reference included.

Sorry if anyone decided to run with it and make false extensions - that was not our intention.

Very glad everyone enjoyed the show, I know we did!

Cheers,
Paul.

Posted by Paul | August 31, 2009 1:39 PM

Paul that's the type of stuff people write that gets them in legal trouble for slander and libel. The mere insinuation that Daniel was on drugs was enough to make people think you were for real. I didn't sense any humor in your tone when you wrote that post. Shame on you.

Posted by Mama Grizzly | August 31, 2009 1:42 PM

Thanks for the footage Paul. People on here get jealous or anxious or even hateful and try to come up with something to hurt the bands that they most likely envy.

Its the most ridiculous accusations and rather pathetic. I'm just glad others on here have decided to call them out on their trash.

Cheers to you for straightening out the matter.

1:46 why the fuck are you DEFENDING Paul? He wrote a slanderous post about Daniel insinuating he was high on something and only added fuel to the comment up top that speculated the guys in Grizzly Bear are coke heads. Thank Paul for what? Video where he tells you to scroll to a certain point that he thinks Daniel is visibly drugged up when he actually is not? You and your blog are a real class act, Paul. Now go get a job at TMZforhipsters.com or something.

I thought Paul just cleared up the matter.....

...he should change the blog post as well though and I hope that he does....

I think its been well documented on here that whole drug accusation is ridiculous and blown out of proportion.

Like another commenter said, Dan is laughing at the Michael Mac line and not "drugged up" like the ass-hats on here claim.

Politics, jay-z, beyonce dressed like hipster, so glad I missed this. It's official, it's hit the mainstream

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 2:13 PM

2:09pm, Paul also went onto Stereogum.com and posted his blog link. There, he basically said Daniel looked out of it and made you really believe the coke accusations. I think he's just back peddling now because he knows he just put himself knee deep into shit and potential slander.

Also, Stereogum.com is down right now and I wouldn't doubt if its because they're trying to get all the coke accusations out of the post they wrote about this show. Nice job, Paul from bigasslens.com.

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 2:18 PM

To clarify the above, Stereogum didn't say Dan was doing coke, but Paul from bigasslens.com or whatever wrote that Dan looked out of it in a comment and that he was doing drugs.

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 2:19 PM

i don't know about anyone else, but when i a wacked out on cocaine i don't want to "jam with my bros." especially not on a stage in front of bunch of people. daniel looks like he's having fun. he's actually smiling, which is further evidence that he is NOT on cocaine. everyone on here seems to have a 5th grader's view of drugs--that all of them just make you happy and silly.

if anything he's stoned.

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 2:22 PM

Hey All - Posted a note of clarification at the bottom of the post. It will remain as originally posted for reference sake.

Sorry if anyone was seriously offended - not my intention at all.

A sidenote as I do not really follow the posting on here - was not aware of anything being said regarding drugs previously, so kind of walked into a small shit storm unknowingly. Either way, it's probably none of our business what any of these guys are doing or putting (or not putting) into their bodies.

For those that still care, we have some great content coming up to www.bigasslens.com that we worked hard to get.

Cheers,
Paul.

Please go back to arguing about whether GB does coke or not and let the people who want to talk about the show talk about the show. thanks

Posted by Matt | August 31, 2009 2:27 PM

Like we believe that now, Paul. You posted your blog entry RIGHT BELOW the post on Stereogum about Daniel doing coke. For all we know, you posted the anon comment way up top to draw attention to your blog. Quit while you can d00d!

When I saw Jay in the VIP area when he first arrived I threw up the Roc-A-Fella diamond, and yelled "Thanks for comin' out tonight, You coulda been anywhere in the world, but you're here with me, I appreciate that...uuunnnh...H to the Izzo, V to the Izza"

"they played amazing" = apex of musical analysis from savy message board critics

the drug slander is insane. i can't believe one random troll fueled this much fire.

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 2:40 PM

You're right @2:40.

People should stop feeding the trolls. The whole drug stuff is ridiculous.

Paul, while I personally appreciate the videos, you've probably just got yourself and your site in a heap of shit.

Can I also add that they "played amazing-ly." I do find it funny that people who are ragging on the empty critical analysis of a commenter fail to provide any of their own.

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2009 2:58 PM

Yea ...i say we all ignore trolls in the comment section......meh and boring comments are just trying to bait us...and paying any attention to crap like today just gives BV commentators a bad reputation..... I usually just post a one line saying a show was great...amazing night....not much in terms of discussion starters but as someone brought up last week..... maybe if we started to ask pointed music/concert related questions then hopefully we can drown out the douchebags...

i'll start with...what did you all think of Victoria's "two weeks" inclusion....it was just a subtle difference but having a beautiful female voice really added to a new classic.....i would of loved to hear her sing more from the song. (this is coming from not the biggest beach house fan either)

Posted by mrcnyc | August 31, 2009 3:05 PM

Victoria sounded great. Nice little shift...

HI this is Daniel,
I'm going to post something because my mother, Wendy, reads these blogs. She may very well find this.
Mother, I don't do cocaine. I've never even tried it. I don't even smoke cigarettes.
Don't listen to these kids.
I laughed on stage because I was having a good time. Sometimes I joke around with Chris Bear during shows. I may have looked a bit haggard. That's because we've been playing festivals for a weeks and and I'm a little burnt out. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it. It was nice to turn around every now and then and watch the boats go by.
It's enough to worry about our basic well-being while we are on the road, so I don't particularly appreciate rumors spreading about false drug habits, no matter how ridiculous.
Thanks yall
happy posting
Daniel

I think they’re just pissed because they never get to eat bacon. I would be constantly angry if I couldn’t eat bacon. That and super tight pants. Wearing tight pants would just make me be act like an a-hole at all times. Having your ballz crushed all day long would make a man pretty resentful and upset. And the Brooklyn-vegans who don’t have ballz are just really ugly chicks who hate everything that is pretty. Which is anything compared to there disgusting vegan ravaged bodies.

I think we've reached a new low here at BV (and the Internet in general) when one of indie rock's biggest acts has to reply to a slanderous blog post and troll comments. While we have the freedom to write anonymous comments, I can't wait for the day until everything has your real name attached to it and we'll see how many people are tough to talk and start lies about people they've never met.

"Slander is spoken, libel is written."

yes, but there is a different standard for public figures. the defamation would have to be knowingly false or have a reckless disregard for the truth.

I was actually standing two people away from Jay & Beyonce and they were really enjoying themselves not caring about anybody else out there!!! Watching Beyonce made me even proud to be a Creole woman because she's so talented and, kind, and just so humble that she asked me if I was ok after I hurt myself that day!! I don't know why people think that a black r&B singer and a black rapper are watching the grizzly bears, I mean afterall music is music regardless of what genre it is!!! So, to everyone who thought it was wrong for beyonce and her husband to enjoy such a show like this, fuck you!!

Posted by Agnes Lumince | September 1, 2009 1:27 AM

holy shit... beyonce, jay-z, coke, boring bands, the twats from the Dirty Projectors. everything wrong in a convenient indie vomit puddle.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2009 7:21 AM

did beyonce and jay-z have to wait in line like everybody else?

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2009 7:43 AM

Well jay-z and Beyonce are both humans. They have the right to protect thir interest. One thing about fans is that whatever you do you just cant satify anyone.i reallyy want to advie them to live their life the way they want. And most importantly Beyonce should never stop smiling. Her smile melts the gathered worries that are ready to injure me.Down it flows back injot her not suspecting heart

Posted by Anon | September 1, 2009 11:45 AM

sigh once again: so the bands get paid, but the staff and security and the volunteers get paid shit. so for all you assholes to bitch and moan, and not once think of the people who have to be on site at 8am and breaking down till 9pm in the complete dark and deal w/ you lot. a) DON'T COME b) STOP MOANING c) BE FUCKING GRATEFUL

as for beyonce and jayz, at least they had the class to a) not climb over fences onto porta potties, not get fucking injured, and not insult the people who put on these shows for you snots. AND THESE SHOWS BEEN GOING ON FOR FOUR YEARS, DO YOU REALLY THINK YOU'RE THAT COOL TO STROLL UP AT 4 AND THINK YOU'RE GONNA GET IN? i mean really, 4 years and yet you guys still complain you didn't get in. GENIUS'S

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2009 1:36 PM

Sure you showed up at 5 and got in...but I bet it wasn't the last pool party of the summer! People are idiots to show up to Girl Talk or Grizzly Bear that close to set.

Oh, but I forgot. Everyone thinks they're the most important person on the list and therefore deserving to be at the show.

No one cares if you're the girlfriends uncles besty.

Stop bitching. It was fun.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2009 1:39 PM

but anonymous i called that persons mom, and i still couldn't stroll in vip style at 5, am i not cool enough?

these pool party threads are basically a role playing interoffice instant message session among the staff of jellynyc

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2009 2:23 PM

hi actually i wrote this, i'm not a jelly staff member have nothing to do with them, but i'm honestly just really annoyed w/ idiots like you, who still don't get it.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2009 2:29 PM

um has anyone been to the jelly office? they have like two people in there..

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2009 2:33 PM

my mom works for jelly. can i get into the show?

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2009 2:40 PM

get what?

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2009 2:44 PM

the Jellynyc staff really come across as pricks here. Always a good idea to call your public assholes and demand they be "grateful." Newsflash: Jellynyc is not a charity!

I love the insinuation that money is not being made by anyone but the bands. Jelly makes bank, and all of it on public state property for which they pay no rent and on which they have exclusive concession and sponsorship rights.

The fact that Jelly barely pays their volunteers is inexcusable, given how much money the organisation is pulling in.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2009 3:00 PM

3:00,

You've got to be kidding me. You think that the JellyNYC people wrote on this board? Really? Please. That was the volunteer person who made remarks about pool party showgoers not being grateful.

Who cares if they make money? They have expenses. It's a business. "Barely paying" their staff is relative, because those are low-skilled type jobs anways.

Ahem. Reading comprehension, try it sometime, fool.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2009 3:12 PM

Jellynyc people totally write on this board, duh it's no secret.

what a brazenly dumbassed thing to lie about.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2009 3:18 PM

if you're making money unapologetically then you should do a better job.

the lineups have been uninspired, the venue is weak (and they didn't even confirm it until mere days before the series began), and the guestlist / door entry situation is incompetent.
