Jay-Z @ APW in Liberty State Park, Jersey City, NJ - 7/31/09 (photo by Tim Griffin)
Jay z

Brooklyn's own Jay-Z opened up his headlining set at All Points West on Friday night with a cover of the Beastie Boys classic "No Sleep Till Brooklyn". Was it a fitting tribute to the group that he replaced on the lineup (due to MCA's diagnosis of cancer) or was it Jay-Z's way of reminding New Jersey what he plans on doing with the Nets? OK, I'll go with the former, and it was our own great Jay-Z festival moment (at his first-ever US festival appearance). The UK's Glastonbury got the (less sincere) tribute to Oasis in 2008.

Speaking of Glastonbury, All Points West got its mud... which came from the rain that miraculously cleared up before Hova took the stage (at which point he covered "No Sleep" with the "Beastie Boys at the Garden" line in the first verse changed to "Jay-Z at All Points West.", and then...)

Immediately after that, he performed his own "Brooklyn (Go Hard)."

Later, he dedicated his entire set to Beastie Boy Adam Yauch. It was Yauch's illness -- he has been diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in a salivary gland -- that forced the group's cancellation, last week.

In his 80-minute day-closing set, Jay-Z also performed hits like "99 Problems," "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)," "Big Pimpin'" and "Dirt Off Your Shoulder," as well as his recent single "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)." [NJ.com]

Tons more pictures coming soon. All our APW coverage HERE. Hopefully you didn't throw away your Friday ticket. Saturday's schedule HERE. A few more videos from Friday (including a clip of No Sleep) below...

APW actually did a solid job of varying their performers, especially in relation to other fests. How was the OK reunion?

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 2:37 AM

OK was dope. everyone was really into it even though it was raining hard as hell their whole set.

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 2:41 AM

when do the Williamsburg Waterfront shows end?? I wanna catch Deerhunter/Dan Deacon then catch a ferry to APW for free!!

Posted by Pedro | August 1, 2009 2:54 AM

Posted by Slob | August 1, 2009 3:04 AM

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 3:25 AM

YYY's video @ 2:08 - guy next to camera being all "YES!!! I love this song!" A) then why didn't you figure out what the song was until almost 2 minutes into Nick playing the intro? and B) yeah...you and about 20 million other people, pal. Thanks for letting everyone know how generic you are.

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 7:55 AM

would it kill the yyy's to play the rock version of maps once in a while? the slow version is boring and sleepy

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 8:18 AM

It may have been all the weed in the air, but the jigga man delivered the goods!

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 9:16 AM

7:55, without the "generic" people you are talking about, who actually pay to go to shows, many shows you go to and much of the music you listen to would not exist. The problem with people like you is that you think you're better than everyone else even though you're just another loser.

Sure, people who pull that shit is annoying to be around but I just watched it. The first 2 minutes is Karen O talking like a shitty Kiss Cover Band Lead Singer. Its not really the start of the song but more lead singer bullshit chit chat.

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 9:24 AM

yeah that love song bullshit is old, shes been using these lines forever and it gets old.

that being said Jay-Z fucking rocked the house. the band was super tight especially the drummer. I couldnt believe he got all that together in space of 2 weeks? incredible. It was way better than Radiohead last year.

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 9:57 AM

well if it counts, HOV came out for Nas' set at RTB last summer

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 10:10 AM

Did anyone catch the Fleet Foxes set? There has been no mention of it, and I'd really like to hear how they were, their setlist, etc. Thanks

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 10:21 AM

Anyone have setlists? Fleet Foxes was excellent.

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 10:48 AM

Fleet Foxes were great. Heartless Bastards were great. Vampire Weekend was great. YYY's seriously brought it. Jay-Z delivered the goods. The National was a bit disappointing.

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 11:01 AM

" incredible. It was way better than Radiohead last year."

you bite your tongue!

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 11:13 AM

What are these goods everyone is talking about Jay Z bringing? Did he throw Dunkin Donuts out to the wet, hungry masses? I know you can't be refering to "good music/tunes" as the goods as Jay Z is a talentless fraud! Damn, tell people something is good enough times and then they start to believe it!

Posted by anonymous | August 1, 2009 11:16 AM

Couldn't disagree more regarding The National. Thought they were excellent in the rain!

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 11:27 AM

You're retarded

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 11:30 AM

Lol the national were dissapointing? Rofl...they were one of the best bands of the day

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 11:37 AM

Other than Jay-Z, the National was my favorite set.

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 11:37 AM

@11:01 thought that Carolina Liar was amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazzzzing!

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 11:38 AM

From the NY Times Blog:

"The rest of the set was, as usual, about the glories of Jay-Z and, on the side, saving hip-hop. He went through the songs about his various nicknames — Hova, Jigga."

No Thank You! Someone great should save Hip Hop from Jay Z!

Posted by anon | August 1, 2009 11:43 AM

The National are so generic they're like the indie Nickelback.

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 12:17 PM

Grizzly Bear >>>> The National

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 12:22 PM

"The National was a bit disappointing."

that is the understatement of the day. everyone has thier own tastes (i didn't like ra ra riot and i was iffy on vampire wkend, etc.) but the national were just bad sounding. like a high school band with no business being up there. whether you like their songs or not its kind of hard to imagine thinking they put on a quality show. i was generally shocked at how awful they were.

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 12:47 PM

Seriously? People were disappointed in Jay-Z? I was sober, I knew only the hits and it was still awesome.

Maybe you'll feel better watching Tool?

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 1:36 PM

Yall crazy Jay Z killed it. Does anyone have a setlist. The National really did suck. So boring.

Posted by ironstank | August 1, 2009 1:53 PM

did anybody else not throw away their ticket but instead have it disintegrate into nothing due to all of the rain. i know mine did.

Posted by Juggy Gales | August 1, 2009 3:53 PM

"did anybody else not throw away their ticket but instead have it disintegrate into nothing due to all of the rain. i know mine did."

Mine completely disintegrated as well. Luckily, it was an e-ticket, so I could print out another one.

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 6:02 PM

waterfront shows end @ eight?!?! no way, how long is each opener?! I know theirs three tmrw! and tough choice I have to make now...? MGMT // Coldplay? what say you?

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 9:04 PM

i saw Jay-Z at HFStival a few years ago...not his first festival.

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2009 11:24 PM

HFStival wasnt a festival It was just a big radio show. One day in a stadium is not a festival

Posted by Anonymous | August 2, 2009 12:08 AM

Hip Hop is nothing but a money grab and any who think differently is a total fucking ROBOT.

Posted by jupes mcghee | August 2, 2009 3:41 PM

Thank you "jupes" 3:41. I'm sure you've just put the kabash on an entire musical movement and culture. I'll alert the media.

YYY's set was great but what the hell was Karen O talking about before playing Maps. She sounds like a moron. I lost a little respect for her during that rant.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2009 11:49 AM

cool!!!
