"John Mcauley of Deer Tick just proposed to Nikki Darlin of Those Darlins on stage in Prospect Park. She said yes!" - BrooklynVegan @ 8:41 PM Aug 7th

Deer Tick

Deer Tick played after Jones Street Station and before Grace Potter & the Nocturnals at the free Celebrate Brooklyn show in Prospect Park on Friday night (8/7).

After an attention-grabbing, intro-drum-solo by drummer Dennis Michael Ryan (complete with white Blueblockers on), the band came on stage and continued to play what can only be called a historic show, for Deer Tick anyway. Not only were we treated to a guest spot by Deer Tick regular Liz Isenberg, but out of nowhere, six songs into the set, Arkansas' Christopher Denny appeared on stage to also help sing a song. We haven't heard from Chris in a while - he's in town to record a new album, and his stand-out voice caused even the zillion people talking in the back to look up for at least a second.

Another Deer Tick highlight was the set-closing cover of "La Bamba", but that's not what made the show historic. That was the toe ring (that came along with a proposal) (that confirmed that John McCauley and Those Darlins' Nikki Darlin are officially off the market). Overall not only a great show, but lots of variety to help introduce the band to a Park Slope crowd full of distracted people who probably never heard of them before. More pictures below...

hetero-kissing makes me nauseous

I had heard of them and was looking forward to seeing them and was a bit disappointed by them. There are a half dozen bands I see regularly in Brooklyn who are better. Not bad but nothing to stand out other than the good harmonies.

NPR dad-core. cool, you know, if your into that kinda thing.

so Aaron Carton, the onstage proposal thing...

BEST WISHES! love conquers all. love justifies the existence of indie rock ten million times a day, in my opinion. nothing more, nothing less, love is the best.

Deer Tick is without question one of the best working rock bands around. They are so good and only improve each time I see them. Better bands in Brooklyn? NPR dad-core? Unless your dad is Jagger that is just confusing, so you both might want to pull your head out of Health's hind quarters and floss the brown out of your ears.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2009 4:22 PM

when did liz isenberg get so fat?

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2009 4:28 PM

Really horrible show.

I was there with a bunch of people who love his records and every single one left afterwards asking, "What the fuck was that?"

He seemed pretty drunk on liquid courage, likely prepping for his proposal, but gimmie a break, the music was sloppy, all of the 'special guests' including his bride to be were really boring, and the songs from the new record, with a few exceptions, are largely forgettable.

If these guys just cleanly ran through the relative Deer Tick hits, I guarentee you the Park Sloper crowd would've paid better attention. Cause I knew all the songs he played and I still had a hard time keeping focus.

All in all a major let down.

Man, all ya'll are a bunch of fucking haters.
Guys and girls alike.
So the show might not have been their best.
Go to your favorite artist's show 30 times and see how many times it's spot on. Get over it. They're good people who make good music, and if you don't like it why the flip are you wasting your time posting a comment. Just don't go next time. It's really not rocket science.

And to the ladies that might have once fucked the dude (while he was or wasn't with his gal) and your comments - you really need to stop hating....it's unbecoming.

And the fat comment?

No wonder you fucks all posted as anonymous - you're a bunch of fucking pussies.

Cheers to you guys (John, Dennis, Chris, Andrew and Liz). May you have all the love and success you work so very hard for.

totally agree with 4:29 on the review of the set. I was really disappointed with Deer Tick. I thought it'd be a good opportunity to showcase what a great band they are in front of a big crowd, but everything about the set was awkward. John is usually great with the banter, but he was a bundle full of nerves when addressing the crowd. Have some confidence fellas -- you usually put on a great show. Seems like they came out expecting to get ignored, and made sure that held true. Their playing was strong (especially the rhythm section), but the setlist lacked any sort of flow and the La Bamba close felt like a desperate plea for attention after boring the crowd for the first 30 mins.

As for Christopher Denny, it was the Rolling Stones' "Dead Flowers" that he came out to ruin. His whole sit-in reeked like a label-favor because there was zero chemistry there. He really sucked -- that's why people looked up.

Too bad blogs can't give impartial reviews -- would be nice to see someone at BrooklynVegan call it like it is rather than play the friendship game. No where to turn any more for real, honest reviews of bands worth covering.

@Brad Pitt 8:33 pm.

I never knew I knew Brad Pitt, but last time I checked my ID it said my name is Liz Joslin....pardon me, Elizabeth Joslin.

Why on earth would you think that that comment would not be posted by me, and why on earth would you think someone would want to impersonate me on a bulletin?

Strange dude.

Anyway, Cheers, whoever you are.

This was my first time seeing Deer Tick, and I liked 'em so much, I bought both records on vinyl! Deluxe editions even. If you didn't dig it, find another band to follow, there's a gazillion of them out there.

Why would someone talk that way about a total fucking stranger.
Bottom line, Deer Tick is awesome, Liz Isenburg is awesome and Those darlins are awesome. All of the Darlins are sexy and if you ever came to one of their shows I guarantee that Jessi Darlin would sucker punch you in your withered excuse for a dick for that previous comment. Let's also get another thing straight you dumb motherfucks, You little twats think you are special because you fooled around with john from deertick??!! Well guess what you little clam to fame whores, THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS OPEN get over it. Sooo I guess he didn't like you that much after all...

Posted by just another dumb motherfuck like the rest of you. | January 7, 2010 8:40 PM

I'm glad that they have an open relationship, cause I saw Nikki make out with two different guys the other night after a show. One is known around town as a sex offender and I don't mean statutory rape. All in all, though, I must say the other night's Those Darlins show didn't disappoint. They put on a really great show. See them if you get the chance.

Posted by Jamesz | March 3, 2010 4:20 PM

dude i want john mccauley who doesnt? very talented attractive guy.. good for nikki - theyre both lucky to have each other. congrats!
ps ive seen both Those Darlins and Deer Tick over 10 times each and IVE NEVER BEEN DISAPPOINTED so shut the fuck up those of you who obviously don't know what you're talking about.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2010 6:06 PM

Nikki Darlin has picked up the nick name "Full Bush" from some guys, cause she doesn't shave, I guess...or even trim.
