Breeders

"I felt like an out-of-touch old man when I overheard the bartender saying that tickets were still available and that they probably wouldn't sell out. How did it come to this? With several hit singles and a platinum-plus album under their belt, the Breeders shouldn't have difficulty selling out a venue that has a capacity of only five or six hundred. Maybe it wasn't promoted well or maybe too many have forgotten about the band (despite releasing an album last year and a fresh, spanking EP a few months back), but they deserved better. Or else I can enjoy the intimacy of the raucous show and wear the ringing in my ears (that still hasn't subsided after twenty-four hours) as a badge of honor." [a review of the Newport, Kentucky show]
The Breeders kicked off their current tour on August 5th in Newport, KY. Last night (8/17), the band played the Paradise in Boston. That's where the pictures in this post are from. Tonight (8/18), The Breeders plays the first of two NYC shows taking place at Bowery Ballroom. Whispertown 2000 opens both both shows which are sold out. More pictures from Boston below...

Great..Kim is back to her fat and butch look..why can't you be more like your sister???

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2009 2:20 PM

Is that Roseanne Barr on guitar?

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2009 2:22 PM

As is often the case at BB, will-call tix for the (not quite) "sold-out" show available on TMaster now.

Posted by drewo | August 18, 2009 2:25 PM

fuck you.

Posted by mrs. john soda | August 18, 2009 2:37 PM

Speaking of bad looks, who's the white guy with the dreads? Dave Pirner? Jay Bennett back from the dead? White people should not be allowed to do this. Thanks a lot, Bo Derek, you sexy bitch!

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2009 2:40 PM

Is Kim Deal still Mrs. John Murphy?

Posted by Regular reader | August 18, 2009 2:48 PM

lol sucker, who's laughing now? not sold out!

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2009 2:49 PM

I'm not sure if you are new in town or not, but Bowery ALWAYS releases a few scattered tickets a day or two before showtime..Even for Morrissey, Franz and Interpol.

I'm sure for all your NIN fans, if you keep hitting refresh before their Bowery show, you might land one or two in your basket,

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2009 3:06 PM

Ooo. I like that Tammy & the Amps tshirt. I might have to bring one home.

Don't be assholes. The Breeders have been so good for so long.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2009 3:27 PM

Whoa. I thought Kim was that Asian guy in all the summer comedy hits this year.

Posted by Jason Lam | August 18, 2009 3:35 PM

Nothing says rock n' roll like Qdoba!

"I'm sure for all your NIN fans, if you keep hitting refresh before their Bowery show, you might land one or two in your basket"

WRONG

all ticketing for Bowery and Webster were done through the NIN website, not ticketmaster. The shows aren't even listed on ticketmaster.

Whispertown 2000 are great, and totally cute too. Show up early kids.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2009 3:45 PM

I know this sounds BV-cliche, but can someone please report on what time the Breeders go on tonite?! I want to make sure I don't miss the start of their set tomorrow since I may have to work late.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2009 4:05 PM

box office says 10pm for breeders

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2009 4:34 PM

and by the way, that is a much better "bv-cliche" than "meh" or "i'd hit that" or daft punk jokes or "why don't you fucking kill yourself", etc. real info like set times or setlists or tickets back on sale should be welcomed whereas the other nonsense comments have unfortunately taken over what is a great live music resource.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2009 4:37 PM

thanks 4:34. i always forget that bowery & mercury usually list their set times.

and i agree with you 4:37 about the other tired BV cliches. i swear this site has gotten overrun with immature 16-year-old. (no disrespect to the mature 16-year-olds.)

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2009 4:41 PM

@Regular reader: you need to watch loudQUIETloud, it's all in there.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2009 4:44 PM

what time does Daft Punk go on?

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2009 4:54 PM

Kim Deal is now actually "Mrs. Big Mac and large Fries".

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2009 5:56 PM

Meanwhile, your band is going to break up in under a year. Your next band won't last 3 months and you'll sell all your "gear". Someone form your high school will become famous (hint, it's not you) and you'll quit music, get a shit job and live out your boring life, occasionally interrupted by shows…

and Kim Deal will still be making records and touring because she's the real thing. Not some anonymous dick commenting on a blog.*

*like me, I know. Anyway, fuck you.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2009 6:05 PM

Kim Deal's toenail clippings > 99% of BV commenters.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2009 7:31 PM

I cant wait till tomorrow, work has been so shitty lately and I cant wait to have fun at a great concert, last time was awesome

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2009 7:34 PM

I saw them at Double Door (downgraded from Metro) in Chicago last Thursday. I hadn't seen them since the early 90s when their show was sloppy and dull.

Guess what? They were even worse. Just a terrible show. No energy from the band, bad sound, etc. I left 40 minutes into their set, something I never do.

Whispertown 2000 were even worse than the Breeders. Truly painful. I didn't realize you could get an opening shot when you can't play instruments or sing.

Don't waste your money.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2009 8:06 PM

saw them with Nirvana. good show.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2009 9:50 PM

I would like to apologize to the Breeders for saying they would not sell out. I was a jerk about it and am truly sorry. I also apologize to their fans I may have offended with my stupid insensitive comments. Hope you liked the show.

4:37 - high an mighty...commenting on an indie music blog about the breeders is inherently childish! If peoples unimaginative commentary really chaps your sack, then dont read them.

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2009 2:10 AM

Thanks for the Excellent pictures!

Can anybody tell me what time the Breeders hit the stage?

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2009 10:51 AM

What time did the Breeders go on?

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2009 11:25 AM

How long they play yesterday?

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2009 12:10 PM

Breeders went on at 10:15, played until 11:35.

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2009 2:03 PM

Thanks!

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2009 2:04 PM

breeders hit the stage when the heroin kicks in.

Posted by h | August 19, 2009 2:57 PM

inherently childish? It's one thing to love a band and want to talk about it on the internet, it's another thing to be a fucking loser kid and go on the internet and read everything on a site like BV and leave asshole comments about bands you don't like.

Fuck hipsters, fuck kids, FUCK THE INTERNET. The Breeders KILLED last night at BB, can't wait to see it happen again tonight.

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2009 5:22 PM

is that Kim at the merch table?

because.

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2009 5:54 PM

Fuck hipsters, fuck kids, FUCK THE INTERNET. right on!!!!

Rock n Roll was so much better back in the day before hipster 22 year olds had an instant and anonymous forum to express their childish and ignorant comments on every show before and after and during every show.

just go to the shows and enjoy yourself and keep your commentary to discussions with the friends you went to the show with. And if you have no friends, try making some at the show and go out with them after the show rather than coming back home alone and immediately posting your complaints here.

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2009 6:28 PM

I don't know what that guy was talking about at 3:45 the other day. Whispertown 2000 were TERRIBLE! (The Breeders, on the other hand, kicked ass!)

Posted by Anonymous | August 20, 2009 10:08 AM

Yeah Whispertown 2000 was pretty bad.

Posted by Anonymous | August 20, 2009 10:40 AM

5:54...I guess the question is "Deal" or "No Deal"?

Posted by Anonymous | August 20, 2009 10:58 AM

What time did they play Cannonball?

Posted by Anonymous | August 20, 2009 11:22 AM

Whispertown was real good. Fun sort of hillbilly/indyrock hybrid. Like the Carter family crossed with the violent femmes.

Breeders were great. Amazing set list (Oh!) great fun, loud. Deals seemed to be having a fun time up there. Kim's voice sounded great and Carrie Bradley (is that her name?) the violin player joined them onstage for some great performances. Awesome night capped off with a mcdonalds icecream cone. Mmmmm.

Posted by Anonymous | August 20, 2009 12:50 PM

Saw them recently in my city and they were great. Did the entire Last Splash album, a few new songs, and a fantastic cover of "Happiness is a Warm Gun." Super-fun show.

Posted by Anonymous | August 20, 2009 1:51 PM

AMAZING show last night. I was kinda skeptical, but these guys delivered.

Posted by A | August 20, 2009 2:56 PM

i thought they sounded like crap. much better last year

Posted by Anonymous | August 20, 2009 4:11 PM

I sold my tickets to last night's show because of all negative comments on BV and now regret it :(

Posted by Anonymous | August 20, 2009 4:21 PM

haha, what? are you serious?

there weren't really even any negative comments. just a couple people who were disappointed (there's always a few) and then some morons with fat jokes.

Posted by Anonymous | August 20, 2009 5:47 PM

4:21 ! That is the saddest thing ever. You were swayed by blog commenters?

So fucking sad! Stop internetting! It's effecting your quality of life!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | August 21, 2009 11:09 AM

saw'em in 93 while sipping pina coladas with kurt and thurston. it was chill.

Posted by Anonymous | August 21, 2009 11:31 AM
