Hopewell

If you haven't noticed, ATP NY is a little more than a week away, and though there will be a ton of one-off appearances at the festival, one could ATTEMPT to see all of the bands in their NYC appearances. I prefer to kill all of it in one fell swoop, and that's why the ATP set times are below. For those that prefer the former, this post is also for you, as we rounded up some of the NYC shows that surround this mammoth festival.

One show we haven't mentioned thus far is Hopewell, who in addition to their support slot for Dead Meadow on 9/9 on a Rocks Off Cruise, will also play an "ATP warm-up show" at The Cameo Art Gallery show on 9/10 with a full choir (!) and projections. To be more specific, they will actually be performing the Desperation Suite set that they put together for ATP NY.

Want to go to Dead Meadow/Hopewell on the boat? I have TWO PAIRS of tickets to give away. More details on how to enter at the bottom of this post.

BoredomsBoredoms are scheduled to play Boadrum 9 at Terminal 5 on 9/9 (at 9:09:09?). Tickets are still available.

The Feelies have set aside 9/13 for Brooklyn (namely, Southpaw -tix here) to play TWO sets, that's as many days after they play Crazy Rhythms in it's entirety at ATP.

Circulatory System plays Le Poisson Rouge on 9/9 (tickets).

Deerhoof is scheduled to play Le Poisson Rouge on 9/15. Tickets are on sale.

Melvins are touring NYC with Down, Weedeater, and Evil Army, hitting Nokia on 9/11 (tix). The band headlines ATP Stage Two on 9/12 (Sat).

Super Furry Animals have a pair of NYC-area dates scheduled, including Maxwell's on 9/12 and Highline on 9/11. Tickets for both are here.

Grouper is scheduled to team up with Tim Hecker for a show as part of the Wordless Music Series on 9/11. Tickets are still available.

Dirty Three play Bowery Ballroom on 9/13 (tix), two days after they play Ocean Songs in full at ATP.

The Drones are scheduled to play all of their LP Wait Long By The River at ATP, and will also play The Bell House on 9/9. Tickets are still available. Bridezilla will support The Drones at The Bell House and are also playing The Annex on 9/10.

And last, but certainly not least, Autolux & Sleepy Sun are teaming up at Bowery Ballroom and Music Hall of Williamsburg on 9/14 (tix) and 9/15 (tix) respectively.

can't wait to go get my atp t-shirt and be the coolest kid around

Wow, the crowned prince of soft spoken wussy indie, Sufjan Stevens, gets first slot of the day on Stage 1? I suppose thats because he sticks out like a sore thumb among the more noisier, experimental acts.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 1:26 PM

or because he needs some extra time to set up and atp is kinda smart in terms of figuring out how to run shit on time.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 1:30 PM

will wfmu stream or b'cast this live?

Posted by my balls itch | September 3, 2009 1:31 PM

or because it's just kind of a genius move - make sure everyone gets there early, no conflict with Animal Collective, good crowd control, etc

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 1:31 PM

maybe Sufjan has to be at church Saturday night

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 1:32 PM

true or false? David Cross has replaced Panda Bear as a member of Animal Collective?

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 1:33 PM

Boredoms or The Drones on the 9th... i can't chooooose

There once was a time where Sufjan ruled the music world. Now your girlfriend will dump you if she finds out you still listen to him instead of Animal Collective. He's kind of did for indie in the mid 2000s what Chris Carrabba aka Dashboard Confessional did for emo in the early 2000s: Made it so delicate, poppy and filled with mainstream vibes that it created a whole new fan base (mostly girls who changed their fashion sense to look Urban Outfitters) for the genre. Unfortunately the fallout has been dealing with the generic mainstreamed "indie" fanbase.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 1:33 PM

@1:33

that is the most perfect metaphor i've heard about this guy:

Chris Carrabba:emo::Sufjan Stevens:indie

Posted by bill | September 3, 2009 1:36 PM

Sufjan Stevens is probably the absolute best songwriter of the decade. Whoever compared him Douscheboard Confessional needs to get their head checked.

Posted by bill | September 3, 2009 1:42 PM

Not too many bad conflicts. Mostly, at least for the bands I want to see, I would have to leave during one band's last song or miss the other band's first song.

I look forward to the bacchanal that was last year, but with 100% more Jesus Lizard and Melvins.

Posted by noamjamski | September 3, 2009 1:46 PM

Does anyone know if WFMU is gonna broadcast sets like they did last year?

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 1:48 PM

It was a good metaphor bill. You might need to get your head checked for working with such strong hyperbole's. "Absolute best" come on everyone know the absolute best is Ryan Adams.

Posted by anonymous2 | September 3, 2009 1:49 PM

yes WFMU is boradcasting sets

the only major conflict in my plan is Melvins vs Deerhunter...just disappointed by having to make that choice...tho i guess i can do half and half

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 1:54 PM

I don't really see how Sufjan has ruined indie or thrown out any "commercial vibes." Sufjan is good enough to do anything - if he wanted to be commercial he would have been by now, I promise you.

AMAZING....I wish we had ATPz in TX, but I shouldnt complain w/ SXSX, ACL, and FFFun!

Posted by TXn | September 3, 2009 2:13 PM

1:33, you are a fucking idiot. good day to you.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 2:15 PM

blah blah blah, this is gonna be FUN

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 2:20 PM

i second that...blah blah blah blah blah
next weekend will be an absolute blast

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 2:29 PM

1:33 is a fuckin' genius!!!

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 2:29 PM

2:03pm, you are incorrect in two ways. First, the correct quoting was "mainstream vibes". Second, Sufjan has already cashed in on commercializing his music thanks. On top of finding himself mainstream enough to played on the radio (Sufjan's music from Come On Feel the Illinoise was being played on KROQ when it came out) it was also showcased in TV adverts and movie soundtracks. Music from Seven Swans was being played on The O.C. too. Sufjan definitely hit the right note when it came to making accessible indie music that translated well into the mainstream.

"word on the street - better food this year."

Good to know for 2010. My crew is bringing shit up with us after last year's special "run back to your room with the shits" gyros.

Posted by noamjamski | September 3, 2009 3:15 PM

seriously cant wait.. good times ahead!

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 3:27 PM

can't believe this hasn't sold out yet

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 3:49 PM

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 4:27 PM

menomena no ny shows out ATP?? commmmmmmmmmmme on...

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 5:34 PM

"AMAZING....I wish we had ATPz in TX, but I shouldnt complain w/ SXSX, ACL, and FFFun!"

Um, they do have airplanes in Texas.. Last year I talked to at least 2 people that had flown up from Texas, and countless that had come from all over the country and even some from Europe.

i wish midi was playing!!:

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 5:52 PM

suicide is clearly the best act here.
anybody agree with that?

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 6:12 PM

Suicide is one of the seminal groups of all time, but they are way too fucking old and their reunion gigs have sucked dick. Best act: Grouper, Melvins, Shellac, JESUS LIZARD maybe. Lots of good ones.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 7:29 PM

@Anon 5:34 PM - I think Menomena is not playing any shows around here because of the Ramona Falls project. Who by the way have two shows here: Pianos and Bruar Falls.

Posted by dee | September 3, 2009 10:10 PM

I'm looking forward to a good time, but 1/2 the craziness that was last year. I don't see how that could be topped. Not with this lineup anyways.

Posted by Anonymous | September 4, 2009 2:02 AM

Not worth flying in for like last year, but that's still a good weekend.

Posted by Anonymous | September 4, 2009 3:29 AM

All who claim this year is inferior to last year are out of their minds. MBV sucks, BTS sucks, YLT sucks, Tortoise sucks, Thurston Moore sucks, Dinosaur Jr sucks......

Melvins, Jesus Lizard, Boredoms, Boris, No Age (Husker Du), Dirty Three and Autolux blow last year away, even taking into account the lack of Lightning Bolt, Mogwai and Low...

Posted by Anonymous | September 4, 2009 10:25 AM

"Thurston Moore sucks"

EPIC TROLL

Posted by Anonymous | September 4, 2009 12:30 PM

Soupy Sales > Sufjan Stevens

Posted by Anonymous | September 4, 2009 1:08 PM

Why r feelies on second?!!?

Posted by Anonymous | September 5, 2009 1:24 AM

Animal Collective? Got one word for you:

MELVINS

* * *

MELVINS destroyed ATP.

To borrow a phrase from Steve Albini last night:

Eat my fuck, [Animal Collective]!
