Crystal Castles

Crystal Castles played before the Flaming Lips on Stage 1 of ATP NY on Sunday. There were long breaks between bands though, so No Age and Bob Mould, on Stage 2, were actually the second to last band to play the 2009 festival. The conclusion of our ATP coverage is coming right up HERE with a review/pics from this whole, third day, but first here is the set of Crystal Castles pictures in full...

people were down on this show, which was decidedly out of place on the last day, but it sounded good, live drums included.

Yo crystal castles was alright, and imma let you finish but...

deerhunter was a better band.

Posted by meh | September 17, 2009 12:33 PM

Saw a song a left because it was so horrible.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 1:08 PM

One of the most under-watched shows of the whole fest on stage one, and for good reason. These retards get their own post but no Caribou Vibration Ensemble? Logic=Fail.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 1:10 PM

I'm getting ready to buy tickets for their show in 372 days. set time, 11:30pm.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 1:13 PM

ADULT, 2009

am i right?

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 1:13 PM

"Hey what's my retarded Heroin addicted maid doing onstage?? Shouldn't she be cleaning my room??"

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 1:17 PM

people were laughing at them....

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 1:19 PM

not a band.

an unchoreographed piece of dull theater, accompanying some guy's home recorded electronic project, played over loud speakers with a strobe light.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 1:19 PM

i bet her vagina has teeth.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 1:19 PM

"Yo crystal castles was alright, and imma let you finish but...

deerhunter was a better band."

this shit is gonna become the new wavves quote/meh/retarded

i actually approve though

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 1:21 PM

live drums? while it's true there was a guy sitting behind a ridiculous kit looking like he was playing the hell out of something, the drum machine sounds coming through the PA bore no relation.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 1:21 PM

how many loser dudes in the pit came when they got a feel of that boney, junkie ass?

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 1:24 PM

To me, it just kind of illustrated how you really don't need interesting songs, discernible lyrics or real musicianship to put on a great live show. All you need is booming sound, strobe effects and the tortured, inarticulate rag-doll theatrics of a beautiful young woman. I won't see them again and have no desire to listen to their recordings, but their set was strangely mesmerizing. Still, if Alice wasn't attractive this "band" would be nowhere. That's why Crystal Castles felt out of place: the rest of the Sunday groups had genuine artistic merit.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 1:25 PM

I dont care if the guy presses a button that makes a sound or the drummer hits an animal skin that makes another sound. All I can say, is this shit is entertaining. And that's why I spend my time paying attention to it. Same rule applies to many other bands. Don't be hater and go queue up for your emo pavement reunion... talk about SNOOOOOOZE

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 1:27 PM

^^ wow...just wow

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 1:31 PM

i would still ryan the muir out of her

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 1:33 PM

she's not that hot, just wearing a hot dress and under strobe lights. it's the stage and your imagination that makes her "hot" to you.

not far from Kutcher's there are clubs where vastly more attractive women will actually get naked and let you touch them, for less money than a ticket for a Crystal Castles show... if you think entertainment is watching women writhe on a stage to backing tracks.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 1:56 PM

Crystal Castles have to be the worst sounding electronic act that is infecting the proverbial air waves as we speak. Pretentious, overrated hipster crap. Sounds like they just discovered the Reason software from version 2002 and started using all the presets. Give me a break. Sorry, it's just horrible. Do something original, please.

Posted by Dan | September 17, 2009 1:57 PM

the surprising sort-of popularity of Crystal Castles at this festival has something to do with the fact that there's no interweb up there and all those fat indie nerds had no other jack off material for a whole weekend.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 1:59 PM

@1:56 - i guess you're right, but i'd at least black the bubblegum out of her, or maybe just bao her nguyen.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 2:02 PM

I don't know guys, I've never seen crystal castles live, and their music is just okay, but I still think that it'd be a real fun show to see. I mean, most electro stuff isn't technically that good, but every time I've been to an electro show, I've had an absolute blast.

Posted by monsoonseason | September 17, 2009 2:06 PM

So completely out of place at this festival. The rest of the bands shine a harsh light on their shallow theatrics.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 2:07 PM

I have very discerning taste and I like them.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 2:07 PM

You know what sucked? It wasn't CC because they put on a fantastic show....a fun 45 minutes. What did suck were the fucking hipster music snobs who can suck the fun out of any room. Made Kutcher's seem that much more depressing.

Lighten up already. I hope they unload Cut Copy on the ATP throngs next year. Suffer!!!

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 2:17 PM

a band like this, and fools' willingness to throw their hard earned dollars at their mediocre touring show, is really an insult to the 99.99% of all bands out there who never amount to anything and never make a dime. These guys are unspectacular in every way, plus are lip-syncing, and by all indications they're smug assholes to boot.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 2:30 PM

@2:17 - fucking hipster music snobs? exactly who did you expect to pay a bunch of money and make it to upstate new york for an entire weekend? which of the three qualifying words - fucking, hipster, or snob - are you lacking?

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 2:34 PM

i'd love to chris this girl's la putt.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 2:40 PM

You guys really like to put me on the spot

Um ok, so the meh comment fad.

The reason that I like this comm--YO WAVVES, I'M REAL HAPPY FOR YOU AN I'MA LET YOU FINISH, BUT "WHAT TIME DOES DAFT PUNK GO ON?" HAD ONE OF THE GREATEST COMMENT FADS OF ALL TIME!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 2:45 PM

the attendance of this festival was decidely not hipster or snobby, it was overwhelmingly boring American college students from everywhere but New York City, plus a minority of foreigners, record fair type fat old bearded guys, and the band members and their music industry buddies.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 2:49 PM

@2:49 - point taken. fair enough.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 2:50 PM

Maybe if you've never seen a band play before and don't know how bands make the sounds they make, then you might enjoy this band's "live" show. otherwise, it's kind of insulting definitely and not good.

I can understand liking this guy's electro tunes (if that's what you're into), but it's a recording project that makes no attempt to transpose the sounds into live instruments. Seriously, it's the same recordings from their records played really loudly while some other make-believe two piece band mimes entirely different stuff, silently.

why would you waste your money to see these charlatans?

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 3:01 PM

this band sucks pretty hard. And Alice looks a little like a retarded girl. Not hott.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 3:06 PM

I'm actually surprised that some people find her attractive.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 3:10 PM

I approve of 2:45. You win the prize.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 3:22 PM

You're actually a c0ck.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 3:25 PM

why does it matter what she looks like? i always find it funny when people talk shit on female artists in regards to appearance. no one hears
'yo that dude from the walkmen isnt that hot"
how fucking stupid and caddy are some of you.
GO BACK TO THE SUBURBS

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 3:37 PM

You sophisticated city slickers never judge people on appearances.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 3:40 PM

people still listen to this band?

whoa.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 3:45 PM

Doesn't matter what she looks like. They're still horrible. I don't care if you're from the city, the suburbs, or mars - they SUCK!

Posted by Blake | September 17, 2009 3:48 PM

hot topic > pacific sunwear

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 3:54 PM

3:37

thats because that dude from the walkmen, Hamilton I assume, is smoking hot. no debate to be had.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 3:55 PM

i wish I had a caddy.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 4:07 PM

Wait....did someone say Pavement was emo?

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 4:07 PM

Yes people still listen to that band, because they made an album full of great, entertaining, catchy songs.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 4:22 PM

I am extremely picky with my music and i thought Crystal Castles were BRILLIANT. There is a deep sadness in their music which some of you are missing because you are focusing on the computer program the guy might be using or whether the girl is attractive or not.

Posted by sam | September 17, 2009 4:28 PM

Well, then you have bad taste in music.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 4:31 PM

which part was fantastic or brilliant?

was it the pantomime rag doll "singer" striking screamo poses in time that had nothing to do with the recorded vocals in the music?

or was it the drummer behind a 900 piece kit thrashing our hardcore lines that weren't audible and didn't visually match the drum machine parts that you could hear?

must have been the strobe light. I gotta admit, the strobe light, invented in 1931 by Harold Eugene "Doc" Edgerton, is pretty brilliant indeed.

HAHA JEALOUS NERDS WISH PEOPLE LISTENED TO THEIR BAND OR LOOKED AT THEIR STICK-FIGURE DRAWINGS.

Posted by ALL CAPS | September 17, 2009 5:13 PM

I used to buy into all of the CC hating that goes on here. But I have seen these guys 3 times this year (coachella, bonnaroo, APW) and you know what? - they completely rocked my shit at every show. I'm not sure they were the right band for ATP, but the new songs they've been playing live are fantastic and I'd gladly, anxiously see them again.

But keep on hating. It's what you guys do best...

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 5:13 PM

my dick gets hard when i look at Pitchfork's main page too but guitars were invented in the 1970s therefore no guitar music right now is innovative. why are you looking at this, don't you have expensive gear to buy with papa's money

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 5:17 PM

4:40 > HA, ha. Well said.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 5:27 PM

yo 5:27 imma let you finish, but 2:45 had one of the best comments of all time. of all time.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 6:15 PM

This is ridiculous. So Crystal Castles pushes buttons to make music but so does Animal Collective and Panda Bear and no one makes a peep about that. I'm not hating on AC or PB when I say this because I love them. So many people here have double standards when it comes to electronic based music and in this case one just happens to originate from experimental folky roots (read: cool) and the other from dark electro dance (read: hipster/uncool). And as for all the comments about CC being the odd addition to the weekend, I think they were a very welcome change to 3 days of music that was largely comprised of psyche/freakout or heavy/dirgy bands. I don't have anything against the individual bands this past weekend but as a whole it felt homogeneous and tiresome.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 6:35 PM

i hear that singer has super rich parents; just sayin

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 6:44 PM

this sure has been a busy day for Crystal Castles' publicist's intern.

so much typing on Brooklyn Vegan!

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 6:44 PM

big difference between crystal castles and bands like animal collective (who I don't even like).

animal collective, panda bear, etc... these guys PLAY ALONG, making percussion and singing effected vocals along to preprogrammed beats and some prerecorded tracks.

crystal castles is just pretending to be a band in an uncoordinated, unrelated little silent pantomime while their mp3 plays over the loudspeakers. it would be insulting to the audience if it weren't so hokey and pathetic.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 7:21 PM

CC wouldn't get half the shit they get if they 1) weren't such absolute dickheads and 2) didn't lie constantly about their history to try and make themselves seem more dark and mysterious.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 7:29 PM

Alice Glass spent most of the night before bumming smokes off of people outside the bar near Stage 1. Seems like she'd be able to afford her own packs, by now.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 7:46 PM

there's nothing sillier than "dark" Canadians

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 7:52 PM

This goes To Every Body Who Hates Crystal Castles Or Loves Them
Don't Worry When Crystal Castles New Album Comes Out They Will Be So Popular That The Whole World Would Love Them

Posted by New Guy | September 17, 2009 8:33 PM

or else they won't.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 8:38 PM

why? are they releasing that crimewave song again, for the fourth time?

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 8:47 PM

when does their new album come out?

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 8:55 PM

yes there's no dark Canadians (Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Godspeed You Black Emperor). living in the ice hell (Canada) is so pleasant.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 8:56 PM

Ok hear is the secret on how Crystal Castles will get Famous an more mainstream around the world
1.They are Going to have a new member in the group
2.The new album will blow people away

Posted by New Guy | September 17, 2009 9:24 PM

I heard around the net that the new album comes out in January 2010 or earlier im not to sure

Posted by New Guy | September 17, 2009 9:29 PM

I've never heard their recorded stuff, don't care about their mystique-y bio (white stripes, kings of leon much?), but their live (or pre-recorded) show energy is tough to beat

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 9:44 PM

man that alice crowd surfing photo started to give me a hard on...i wonder how many guys/girls tried to jam there fingers in her ass...and yes i would like to smell. cc are good.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 9:56 PM

music festivals (outside of europe where it's understandable to go being that bands aren't over there all the time) = for the douchiest of the cunt rags.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2009 10:06 PM

Ive saw them live at Lolla this year and ive seen some videos from ATP on youtube. First let me say that at Lolla they were amazing, sound, atmosphere, crowd, everything was great. When i see the video from ATP it just seems like nobody is into it which really can ruin the whole viewing experiences, especially for a band like that.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2009 2:26 AM

Who ever likes this band should shove there head back up their ass. And, whoever compared Animal Collective to this bullshit should be shot. You have know clue, so go back to watcjibng MTV Cribs & stay off of this site.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2009 10:20 AM

Animal Collective and Panda Bear both SUCK. Come to grips with it. Electro folksy? For Christ's sake already.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2009 10:39 AM

Wow, suggesting that the person who compared CC to AC should be shot?! A bit extreme for such a stupid cunt.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2009 10:50 AM

Shot with a water gun. Sorry, have a lot of passion
when it comes to good music.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2009 11:27 AM

Wow, a lot discussion on such a terribly mediocre band. Actually, mediocre is giving too much credit.

Posted by A man | September 18, 2009 12:34 PM

what really ruins an experience of seeing a band is when a band isn't actually playing their instruments and the audience is old enough / smart enough to tell the difference

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2009 12:41 PM

neil young and leonard cohen aren't dark in the way crystal castles is trying to be.

crystal castles thinks they're "dangerous," which you gotta admit is pretty laughable coming form Canada.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2009 12:43 PM

"man that alice crowd surfing photo started to give me a hard on...i wonder how many guys/girls tried to jam there fingers in her ass...and yes i would like to smell. cc are good."

@Anon9:56 - You need to get out more.

Crystal Castles is trying to be the Insane Clown Posse for mall style fashiony 15 year old rich girls who are into vampires and cutting themselves

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2009 12:55 PM

man I got a huge boner thinking about crystal castles' fourth member joining up soon! whoo! they are going to give mariah a run for her money! whoo!

whoo!

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2009 1:00 PM

Someone, please tell this band to stop making music.
It's polluting the air. Thank you.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2009 3:56 PM

Animal Collective and Crystal Castles both stole their album covers from Japanese artists, both use backing tracks when playing live, both bands have really ugly band members, both bands have timeless great songs within their genres whether you like it or not.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2009 6:19 PM

crystal castles are a fake band. period.

It's a home recoding project that doesn't even try to translate into live music. Two 3rds of the people on stage are not affecting the sounds coming through the PA system, at all.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 1:57 PM

when they make mistakes it's clearly audible to everyone.

i've seen them 3 times this year (festivals). if you know the songs you hear the bad notes that creep in occasionally.

for example at coachella my fave song was ruined because the guy hit the wrong chord after a long build-up.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 2:14 PM

WOW, WHAT A BUNCH OF SNOBS. CAN'T YOU JUST ENJOY A SHOW AND NOT WORRY ABOUT ALL THIS SHIT? CRYSTAL CASTLES ARE FUN LIVE, ISN'T THAT ENOUGH? WOULD YOU RATHER STAND, ARMS CROSSED, FROWNING AT A BAND. ..I don't go to gigs to be challenged intellectually, just to have fun.

Posted by kerrk | September 19, 2009 10:31 PM

Anyone remotely close to the stage can see clearly that the dude is playing basslines on a Korg keyboard. When he makes a mistake you can hear a wrong note and then he stops for a second to figure out his place again. He always makes mistakes because he's a drunk.

Posted by Thom | September 20, 2009 12:07 AM

clearly hit a raw nerve pointing out that these losers don't play their instruments.

2/3rds of them are just mugging and making movements that don't match the music, the one other guy is hitting play and adding some minor flourishes with electronic gear. that's it. period.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2009 3:01 AM

Both Animal Collective and CC do not hide the fact that they are performing instruments over a backing bed of tracks. I'm sure it would take about 5 extra members each to actually play everything you can hear happening. Flaming Lips were doing the same thing last time I saw them.

New Order, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys did the same thing in the 80s. Get over it. It's no secret.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2009 6:33 AM

CRYSTAL CASTLES SUCK!!!

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2009 9:38 AM

courtship dating by crystal castles is the best.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2009 4:03 PM

ok 6:33, you clearly do not get it (or are playing dumb to defend your client).

they aren't "playing along" to recoded tracks, 2/3rds of the people on stage (the singer and the drummer) are not playing AT ALL. they're just vaguely miming what a band looks like when they're playing, and the movements don't even match the recorded music. it's hokey and pathetic.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2009 6:59 PM

cc have nothing to hide. look at this. clearly live drums plus vocals are plugged into the keyboardist's equipment and treated by him live:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MveATYWPT8w

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2009 8:16 PM

okaywhoever said they lip sync is a dumbass and obviously doesnt know much about music anyway. if any of you haters would read up about them you would find out that she sings through a vocoder so her voice is just effected. crystal castles is the shit and they make mad money doin it. so dont be jelous

Posted by ben | September 24, 2009 12:28 AM

The term "lip sync" would imply some degree of syncing, whereas this "Alice" character appears to be screming wholly different songs on stage than what comes over the PA system.

The "vocal" sounds are clearly samples. In their biggest hit, the vocals are obviously directly sampled from the Health song, with nothing originating from that little rag doll flailing around with a microphone.

Why would anyone be jealous of these clowns? they are popular with 15 year old Canadian girls who like vampires and cutting themselves. Pretty lame existence.

Posted by Anonymous | September 24, 2009 3:24 PM

These teeny bopper losers have got about 2 months left.

Hope they remember their little "moment" fondly when it's over.

Posted by Anonymous | September 24, 2009 5:15 PM

cc will never die.

everyone knows alice screams live wtf is wrong with you? it doesn't even sound like samples, what a lame rumour to try to start.

Posted by jake | September 28, 2009 6:11 AM

I stayed for the whole set because I was on acid and I was convinced that I wouldn't be able to get a good spot for the Lips if I left. About halfway through the stobe-tantrum that girl was having on stage I looked over to my girlfriend and said:

"The looks and sounds like what cocaine feels like".

True story. Terrible "band".

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 1:16 PM

"looks and sounds like what cocaine feels like"
