David Bazan in a Brooklyn house - Aug 31, 2009

David Bazan started last night's Brooklyn apartment show (August 31st) with the first two tracks on Curse Your Branches, his new record out today and streaming online at AOL. "Hard to Be" and "Bless This Mess" (the latter posted above) are two of his best - direct affecting stories with unshakeable melodies. In front of a magenta wall with only a parlor-sized acoustic and his well-projected voice, Bazan took requests and questions ("Is this the best CD you've ever made?" A: "My label head is telling me yes."). With songs like "Cold Beer and Cigarettes" (the humorously cataclysmic scenario of which garnered a few smiles) and the encore, "Poison" at the host's behest, Bazan showcased his particular talent for being straighforward (while uncloying) and connecting directly with audiences (be they in person or online).
But you can see for yourself - the captured streaming show, which aired right here on BrooklynVegan.com last night, is embedded below.
He has two more house shows left before his full-band tour this fall. That bigger tour comes to Bowery Ballroom for a show on October 18th. Tickets are on sale.
Actually that's not totally true, Bazan's first full-band show is happening tonight (9/1) as a private gig in lower Manhattan. We have two pairs of tickets to give away to the performance that starts at 7pm. More details are below. If you don't win tickets, we also just found out that "the first 10 people that buy the record at Other Music in NYC get a pair of tickets to the show as well." Give them a call or run over there now.
Contest details, embeddded video and tour dates are below...
TO WIN A PAIR of TICKETS TO SEE DAVID BAZAN w/ a FULL BAND tonight (9/1), e-mail BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.com with the word "Branches" in the subject line. Please include your first and last name. Winners must be 21+ and will be contacted with the show's location by e-mail ASAP.

There was a time not too long ago that this was a serious, interesting music blog (as it still is) with comments that were serious and interesting as well (which it now rarely is). Now that it has become popular, there are way too many people on here who seem to have nothing to do but write insults and "jokes" (assuming you think MEH said for the gazillionth time is funny). This nonsense even leaked into the comments during Bazan's performance last night.
BV, it may seriously be time to abandon this site and start up another one. Those of us who've been reading you for a while will surely find you and maybe this can get back to what you originally had.

This website is for chin rubbing comments only. No jokes! No comedy! No k-heads!
Let's all discuss jazz music over scones and wipe our hands on iggy pop records with viagara pills in our pockets?

I agree with what texastab said. The typical commenter here is imMEHture.

Either Preach, Run the country, or play music..none of them mix. Don't try to cram either down our throats through music. So fuck off and go to your church of God.

The key to a great MEH comment is not to force it.
"David MEHzan" is forcing it, because BA and MEH don't sound anything alike.
it's best to use the MEH joke on words that actually have a syllable that sounds like MEH, like in the MEHtallica thread or if this were the 80s, MEHn at work.
also don't MEH a truly great band, that defeats the whole purpose of a MEH joke, although this is not a hard and fast rule, remember the great Paul MEHcartney thread where people made MEH jokes out of the entire Beatles catalog. MEHpic.
if there is no MEH joke to be had, it's best to just wait for the next thread. forcing it brings out the haters. if you wait for your chance, you will actually get, as I have, compliments on your MEH joke, it's originality and timing.
Thanks for listening! I hope we can all use this handy guide to MEH jokes so we can continue the meme and have fun with it!

your guide to MEH:
i love you.

4:47: "Hipster," "trust fund," "American Apparel." You nailed it, bro. You hit on all the key talking points when composing an out-of-touch, I-clearly-didn't-get-laid-enough-in-college rant in the Brooklynvegan comments.
What the fuck is wrong with you? I assume you don't live in Brooklyn, for starters. You must live in Richmond, VA, and you heard about this site from Spin or something, and all the cute girls moved up here after college and you "scene" just isn't the same any more and wah wah wah
Shut the fuck up. Every time you say the word "hipster," what you are actually doing is announcing "I am uncomfortable with my body and the way my clothes fit me." We're all just trying to find community and have fun.

I agree, never MEH a great band, like Daft Punk. Too forced.

I am all for getting rid of "anonymous" comments, and requiring legit username and passwords. It would get rid of all of the nonsense comments that are running rampant lately.

Ha! Kudos to bd and Guide To Meh for some decently funny comments.
Also, Bazan rules! Glad he's not religious anymore.
