DOWNLOAD: Harlem Shakes - Strictly Game (Kids At The Bar Remix) (MP3)

Harlem Shakes @ Highline Ballroom in March (more by Ryan Muir)
Harlem Shakes

About a month ago I heard the Harlem Shakes were on "hiatus" which usually doesn't mean much. Last night I heard that, like Pela, it's actually over. And just when they started to get some momentum going with a great new album. RIP.

Meanwhile, there is at least one still-active Shakes side project (which according to one commenter actually pre-dated the band anyway). Arms (aka Todd Goldstein) plays a free afternoon show at The Bell House in Brooklyn on October 3rd. Arms' full-length debut, Kids Aflame, currently only available on import through Melodic Records in the UK, will be released (with new bonus tracks) digitally through Gigantic Music on October 27th.

wait, so is these new band same members? or new singer?

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 4:12 PM

Arms is just one member of Harlem Shakes.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 4:17 PM

wtf?

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 4:21 PM

That sucks.

Posted by Greg | September 19, 2009 4:23 PM

Zach12 was the cause.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 4:38 PM

Is there a source you can cite for this, BV? Who told you? A band member?

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 5:08 PM

Don't question your stepfather!

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 5:13 PM

thats a shame. Technicolor Health was a great album

Posted by MF | September 19, 2009 5:47 PM

The band members have been pretty public over the last month or two about their breakup. Pitchfork's review killed em.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 5:48 PM

i know the band... the record just didn't do what they thought it might do for them. press wasn't great, it just seemed obvious they weren't getting any bigger/going anywhere

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 6:17 PM

Maybe members of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Harlem Shakes and Pela should form a supergroup now.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 6:35 PM

that's a shame. it was a very good album, and they're really nice guys.

on to bigger and better things, i hope.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 6:36 PM

The singer has a good job too, so he probably didn't take the band as seriously as the other members.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 6:40 PM

Oh man, this sucks! They did take too many hiatuses, like when they went over a year without playing NYC, which probably hurt & was a bad sign.

Guess this won't be a better year.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 7:18 PM

PItchfork's review had nothing to do with the music. That was bullshit right there. I loathe them more and more every day. Another one goes down.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 7:20 PM

the leader singer actually used to be cute...

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 7:43 PM

the verb 'spawned' is inaccurate in this case. Todd's Arms project predates his involvements in the Shakes by a few years and continued even during his time with the band.

Posted by Bob Costas | September 19, 2009 7:58 PM

That's funny, Bob. I had a conversation with someone about the inaccuracy of that verb as well. Spot on.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 8:13 PM

removed "spawned".

Posted by brooklynvegan | September 19, 2009 8:41 PM

well, at least pela broke up. finally

Posted by alex Aldi | September 19, 2009 10:19 PM

this definitely has nothing to do with pitchforks review or press. When technicolor health dropped they became a pretty big deal. they have been touring with big names like vampire weekend, death cab and passion pit. it can't have anything to do with not being big enough. you can't break up because after 6 months of an album being released you aren't as big as the beatles. it must have to do with something completely different. i hope. i also hope that this is a temporary disbandment.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 10:28 PM

this is really a shame... I really loathed this band for a while, but A) the new album was really fantastic and B) their live show seriously improved (saw them at SXSW and then at Bowery Ballroom... really f'in good)

Good luck to them.

Posted by sk | September 19, 2009 10:33 PM

10:28, you are probably right and wrong. They were doing well, but you underestimate their expectations and ironically bring up exactly the problem. Look at 2 of the bands you mentioned they toured with. They are not only friends of Harlem Shakes, but have been around for a shorter time while getting much, much huger. At the same time, maybe it's only one factor. They weren't doing as well as they hoped + X = breakup.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 10:35 PM

Maybe it's an issue of their expectations coming up against the reality of the situation. The reality being that they are a great band with an excellent record and live show, and are aware of it, and just don't realize how well they have succeeded simply by headlining a place like Bowery to a solid and enthused crowd and expected more. Granted: they have existed for four years or something, but given where they are--just on the general band timeline--that's really an achievement.

They would have broken through with more time, whether or no they became press darlings. It's a shame.

Sad about the Shakes, but luckily Arms has both the Shakes guitarist Todd and keyboardist Kendrick on board. Now if Arms could only convince the Shakes drummer to join, they'd have the best parts of the old band anyway.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 11:57 PM

fuck

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2009 1:18 AM

I saw that Kendrick the keyboardist is playing a benefit for Showpaper coming up by himself, and he recorded those Yeah Yeah Yeahs covers. Maybe he's gonna have a solo album, too?

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2009 1:53 PM

Kendrick was the best part of the band anyway as evidenced by YYY covers. Psyched to hear his solos. Good riddance if they can't handle the enormous burden of OMG GETTING SUCCESSFUL. What a tribulation.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2009 2:21 PM

11:57.. no way. Jose was the best part of the band.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2009 4:41 PM

Ok you're right, Jose has a great stage presence. Could do without that singer tho.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2009 4:45 PM

what! the singer was wicked.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2009 8:38 PM

saw these guys open for Tokyo Police Club back in '07, Sickos was my jam that entire summer.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2009 9:12 PM

What. This fucking sucks.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2009 9:41 PM

Hopefully Passion Pit dies next.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2009 10:42 AM

Sad day.

Posted by Pugatch | September 21, 2009 12:21 PM

I thought they had great press.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2009 2:35 PM

Harlem Shakes were one of NYC's best. But it'll be fun to see Kendrick Strauch, Harlem Shakes' former [ :( ]keyboardist and a gifted songwriter in his own right, performing new originals and dueting with one and only Shilpa Ray at this weekend's ShowPaper benefit. It's at Kidd Yellin gallery in Red Hook, Bklyn. Also watercolors by Gibby Haynes --from Butthole Surfers-- to be on exhibit, tons of beautiful art and other amazing bands (Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players, Your Nature, Rebecca Schiffman, Sarah & Michelle Cagianese), Article Mag booth, other awesomeness. Come support ShowPaper and enjoy the sweet show. Fb event page: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=135524738889&ref=mf

three of them were at phoenix/passion pit, talking and chilling as if nothing was wrong.

Posted by Anonymous | September 28, 2009 1:11 PM

@7:43 I disagree, the singer is still attractive. It is a shame they split.

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2009 6:10 PM

I love these Kids At The Bar Remixes, always so sick!

We need a proposal for internships progress. Because we can't receive so many students for that. Maybe we will make a selection for that.
