Marmoset

Long-running Indianapolis band Marmoset will be in New York next week as part of a short East Coast tour supporting their sixth record, Tea Tornado, their first for Joyful Noise records. Like their previous albums on Secretly Canadian, Tea Tornado displays a heavy Brit influence with a distinctive, almost sinister tone. I asked former Indianapolis resident (and current World Without Magic frontman) Patrick Bower what he remembered about Marmoset from his time there:

Marmoset are one of the few bands from my time in Indianapolis that I count as "authentic," by which I mean they lived the life. They just made music constantly in their home studio near my house in Fountain Square and were never really part of the (largely non-existent) scene. I'm glad [Secretly Canadian's] Chris Swanson believed in them enough to keep putting out their records, despite the fact that they never really toured. I count The Record in Red as a bone fide classic, almost a perfect record. I remember seeing them in college before any of my bands got going, and I remember being struck by how creepy they were. It gave me the same feeling as watching Jandek or maybe Wesley Willis. To their credit, they maintain that eeriness to this day.
As Patrick notes, Marmoset don't tour much so go see them while their out of their nest. They play Cake Shop on September 9 (Wednesday) and Bruar Falls the next night (9/10). There's a few MP3s at the top of this post -- "Peach Cobbler" is from their new Tea Tornado, the others are from their Secretly Canadian days, and you can also download a live album (ZIP) as well. didn't casper and the cookies w/ everything now! take the same tour route? cake shop then bruar falls? I guess indie bands from indiana must have the same booking agent...

I think only too good for their britches NYC bands regularly have booking agents, unlike most of the rest of the country with indie bands. Oh the righteous thinking of "indie" industry types wanting to be special like large record label heads.

Oh the righteous thinking of "Anonymous" morons thinking that booking your own tour is so noble instead of giving someone a cut of your profits so that you can focus on the actual playing part. Ban

Bands who work with booking agents are lucky. It means someone wants to the work for you, and all they do is take a percentage.

Seriously, the commenting on here gets worse every day.
I think it is time to require login and passwords.
Seems like many legit commenters don't even bother anymore because their comments are buried in a sea of meh comments and spam from foreign lands etc.

If BV didn't allow Anon commenting I would almost never come here. The 100+ response threads with nothing but back and forth snark is the only reason to come here, really.

after having listened to one song of the new marmoset record, i can definitively say it sucks balls.

The new Marmoset record sucks??! Go spin your Dan Deacon nonsense and think about how little you know about music.

11:12 is really serious about music guys. For serious.

"11:12 is really serious about music guys. For serious."

Haha, but for real...the comments on this site haven't been about "the music" for a long time. It's just hipster drivel centered around the aesthetic of the bands and not the music itself. Lots of bashing, jerkoffery, and d-bag 'meh' comments.

Vivian Girls can't play worth SH!T, Dan Deacon is a tool, and Brooklyn is LAME...get over yourselves!

11:12 is in marmoset.

To clear the hairy airs, for the record:

Yes, Everything, Now! and Casper and the Cookies have the same booking agent as Marmoset. His name is Dan Deacon. From Brooklyn. He has elf ears.

We corporate midwestern "indie" bands tend to lose a lot of money on tour, with or without a booking agent. So instead of claiming a band's new album "sucks balls" after admitting you didn't even listen to it, perhaps you should go see them live and actually listen. Give them some of that N.Y.C. rece$$ion money, then throw away your computer, nerd.
