Pela breaks up

RIP Pela. You can read their goodbye letter below...

Friday, September 18, 2009
Thank you, and good night.....It is with great sadness that we write you today. Pela's collective journey has come to an end.
Over the past 2 years we've faced tremendous obstacles. We recorded an album twice, had a falling out/legal battle with our old label, fired 2 managers, had a big record deal fall through, and Billy had a hand injury followed by a foot injury.
We've worked tirelessly to get our music out of ourselves and into your ears. We worked endlessly to make the music and our live show the best we could. At the end of the day we had to start dealing with some realizations.
We will never be able to thank you enough for your support. For those of you that drove and flew hours just to see a show, we thank you. For those of you who wrote us and gave us the opportunity to get to know you, we thank you. For those of you who told us to keep soldiering on, we thank you. Words can't really describe how we're feeling about this difficult decision, but we want you to know that it's the healthiest decision we could make.
Your lovely faces are etched into our memories. Looking at the Crowd Project videos says it all.
Please keep in touch, we'll promise to do the same.
xoxo- Nate, Billy, Tom, and Eric

Pela, I'm really happy for you, imma let you finish but Farrah Fawcett had the best celebrity news that was overshadowed by other celebrity news ever.

Easily one of the best live bands on the New York scene. Damn shame.
Their live shows were just plain kickass.
I hope they release the album that they recorded in some capacity. The songs I heard them play at Mercury Lounge from it were really good.
With so many crappy bands getting a lot of hype, these guys were the real deal.

Pavement?!?!? Oh wait, Pela.

good band goes down, that's sucky.
Posted by anon | September 18, 2009 5:19 PM
Well at least we have We Were Promised Jetpacks to fill the void. They are pretty much the same band.
Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2009 5:20 PM
It couldn't have happened to a nicer group of guys.
Shit.
Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2009 5:20 PM
Yeah, Pela were a hell of a fun band to see live.
Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2009 5:23 PM
We Were Promised Jetpacks doesn't sound like Pela.

Who knows maybe there will be a surprise get back reunion in a couple of years after the foot heals. Thanks for the memories after the last 20 years guys its been a long road full of fast cars and loose teens. We will never forget you and the inspiration you wrought on this musical landscape. You will be missed, but never far from our minds.

I prefer Fela

I predict 4 reunion shows at the Prospect Park Bandshell in 2021
Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2009 5:28 PM
that's terrible. there's a lot of bullshit flooding the scene. Pela was not one of them.
I'll be patiently awaiting a reunion!!!!

I am actually pretty bummed about this. I thought they were going to be huge.

So sad to hear this! These guys are great! Oh, this is Brooklyn Vegan, snarky remark:
They are opening 4 of the 31 Pavement shows in Central Park next December, see you there...
Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2009 6:23 PM
I blame Sally Struthers.
Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2009 6:23 PM
What a real bummer. A great bunch of Brooklyn guys. If you missed them, I feel bad for you.

The new record is great. The live shows were getting stronger with each play. One of the good ones goes down. We'll miss you guys.

All I can say is DAMN..... You guys have light a fire under my butt the last few times I have seen you and I have been looking forward to your new... now lost album :( Billy I remember taking a picture with you at Schubas in Chicago. You ALL have given sex to my ears for the last two years and will miss those moments. Long Live Pela :(

eh. quitters never win.

My advice to Pela: Even though they have split, put their finished album online in some form. People will listen to it. Word will spread.
Look at what happened to WILCO. They were dropped by their label. The album leaked. Word spread. 50 labels in a bidding war.
I had a bootleg copy of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot for well over a year before it was actually released, and I still bought a copy when it came out. It was a great record. Why wouldn't I give the band money?
Even if they never want to get back together, at least put the finished music out there, and see what happens.

i dont fucking understand this place. when bands that are doing interesting and compelling things are mentioned, all you see from the commenters are "meh" and "this band sucks so bad why does BV cover them?" "i dont understand the hype about this band," etc..
but when the most boring, lifeless, tepid, fake-ass, fratboy, turd of an "indie rock" band (whatever that means now) breaks up, one sees nothing but sad laments in the comments.
this confirms my suspicion that BV commenters are mostly just outsiders who bitch from the sidelines and really only like "safe" music. where the fuck are your backbones? your balls? your sensibility? your goddamn taste? this is new york city. are you seriously sad about this fucking band????? this is like music for NBC television shows. do you even care about art and music and culture or is this all just fashion and a way in which to get laid?
Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 10:04 PM
i pick getting laid by a landslide!
Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2009 10:16 PM
I don't know where to begin... this is regarding the idiot a comment or two back. Yes idiot. The one claiming to know all about art and culture in New York fucking city. Your whole comment was a big contradiction. You are moaning about people saying bands suck as comments and then you leave this band sucks as a comment. You call them fratboys and then say all their hype is based on fashion? I didn't realize the fratboy look was fashionable.
I get it. You're the uber smart music guy. The snob. The one who REALLY gets it. We're all just tasteless blobs that are spoonfed our music.
You are an idiot friend. Maybe your lack intelligence was the reasoning behind your failure to "get" this band. Maybe that's why you're so angry that people are going to miss this band. You got left out in the cold on the Pela party and I have a feeling that you've been there before.
The term "indie" has become "trendy". A long time ago. And I can't find a band that has done it more independently then Pela. And they've done it by networking in a community of artists that understood the true "art" aspect of it. The bigger picture. I've never seen them in skinny jeans doing beer funnels while sexually harassing women. So fuck your assertion about a fratband or some fashionista band and I'm still trying to figure out how you could be both.
You're the guy who doesn't like bands anymore when other people like them. Who cares if people will miss them. How is it effecting you really? Why did you even read the comments let alone leave one??? Mr. Trendsetter, Mr. Artist, Mr. Culture, Mr. New York fucking City.
Dear Pela, thank you. You will be
missed.
Dear Pela, thank you for the music.

Pela wasn't a frat boy band by any stretch. I consider myself a music snob. Not a hipster by any stretch, but definitely a music snob. Pela was a true indie rock band. And they made great Rock N Roll music. They didn't try to be trendy. They just made good music, and their live shows were stellar.
Perhaps so many of us were saddened by the break up because we've seen so many shitty trendy bands get lots and lots of press, despite the shotty music, and then a great band like Pela splits up before they got the acclaim they deserved.

Hooray for skinny jeans and doing beer funnels while sexually harassing women!!!!!
