Rod y Gab

Rodrigo y Gabriela's new album 11:11 is out now. For a limited time you can grab the track "Hanuman" for free from Amazon. Grab the track "Buster Voodoo" for free above.

"...their second live album, released last year, sounded like a stopgap. They urgently needed new material, and it's provided by these 11 instrumental pieces, each written in thanks to very different musicians who inspired them, from Hendrix to Spanish flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia or the Palestinian oud players of Le Trio Joubran. There are more changes of mood and pace than in the past, with new textures provided by the addition of oud, sitar, piano, and even electric guitar. The best tracks include Hunaman, Buster Voodoo and Chac Mool, but all feature the remarkable interplay between the two guitarists." [Guardian]
Wednesday night (9/16), the metal-loving Mexican/Irish guitar duo kicked off a tour of North America at Terminal 5 in NYC. Were you there? More pictures from it, and all tour dates below....

Same here, def a bummer to have missed them, but a man's gotta have standards.

i can only imagine how frustrating it must be to "see" a guitar playing duo that sit down most of the time at terminal 5.

I was there last night, they were fab and in fine form despite it being totally the wrong kind of venue for them - the crowd SUCKED, loud talking over everything. They need to play theater type venues or something like that where the crowd is focused on listening to music, not clubbing it with their friends. Did I say that the crowd sucked?

Back to RyG - the new stuff comes off better live than on the record.

Rodrigo y Gabriela Rocks the house
Went to a truly great show last night at Terminal 5. Rodrigo y Gabriela are a guitar duo with a unique, unclassifiable style. To say Rodrigo plays acoustic lead and Gabriela provides rhythm and percussion on her Spanish guitar is woefully inadequate. They played for almost two hours straight and had the packed house stomping their feat and clapping their hands on every song. I have rarely been at a totally instrumental show where the audience's attention didn't flag until last night. If I had to nitpick for negatives they could have had a bit more stage patter but you could tell they were uncomfortable with their English. Also the crowd was waiting for their version of "Stairway to Heaven" which has been many listeners introduction to the duo. They gave a short boogie version in their encore. (It looked like they want to move on from that cover tune.)

Lastly, I took 1/2 star off simply for their choice of opening acts. Rocco DeLuca was dreadful. 35 minutes of dobro slide blues. Every song sounded exactly the same right down to his Robert Plant wannabe sustained wail. If you want to be a successful solo you must at least play well or sing well. DeLuca's slide guitar work was amateurish and his singing was interesting for one song and then quickly became tiresome.

Interestingly the crowd was not your usual 21-35 year old T5 crowd. Quite a few 40+ in attendance and proving they haven't forgotten how to stomp, shout and enjoy a great performance.

The venue was fine - at least from my perspective on the 1st balcony. Admittedly I was concerned that one glance at my ID would get me booted for old age, but surprisingly the crowd was a harmonius mix of 20 to 60 somethings. Rod y Gab are amazingly talented artists though I dont know how long they will be capable of sustaining the difficult hand percussions and freekishly intense rifts before their hands literally fall off! Thought Rocco Deluca was interesting but 2 songs would have sufficed.

Veronica, age means nothing...I'm an over 40 female who has survived T5 numerous times this year. :) My beef with the crowd was that they wouldn't freakin' shut up!

This talk of acoustic guitars at Stubb's makes me nervous! :(
