Shudder to Think

Shudder to Think had many different lineups while they were active from 1986-1998. Staying consistent with that, they've had varying lineups during this 2007-2009 reunion period as well. Frontman Craig Wedren has also has had many different musical projects since 1998, projects that maybe better represent where he is now than the one he just got back together. One of those solo-like projects, which he has performed with at Le Poisson Rouge and Joe's Pub in recent times, is a collaboration with the mini orchestra ACME.

With that background in mind, maybe last night's show wasn't actually too peculiar. First, Shudder to Think guitarist Nathan Larson wasn't at the show. The official reason was that he was busy with his other band (and wife in) A Camp. Oddly, A Camp doesn't/didn't have any shows scheduled, and Nathan has been a part of the reunion since the start. Second, after a first set of Shudder to Think songs, Craig switched the format of last night's show and actually did bring out, and perform with, ACME. Craig explained that he actually wrote the songs with Jefferson Friedman while STT was still together, so it still counted. None of this made it a bad, possibly final, show... just sayin'.

Shudder's last drummer Kevin March was the drummer last night (as he has been for the whole part of the reunion), and Shudder bassist Stuart Hill was nowhere to be found (same for the whole reunion). The show opened with old songs like A Vampire's Proposal, Lies About the Sky, and About Three Dreams and then seemed to segue into Pony Express material (still no Nathan).

But then came a surprise. Chris Matthews who was the original Shudder guitar player even before Nathan joined the band, came on stage for two songs, one being Red House, the other being Day Ditty (both songs he originally played in). The other guitarist in last night's band is the new guy who has been there since 2007. After the ACME bit they came back to rock again.... Overall they played for around two hours. Other songs included Gang of $, Lies About the Sky, Nine Fingers, She's A Skull, No Rm. 9 Kentucky, Love Catastrophe, X-French T-Shirt, and Hit Liquor... full setlist in the comments.

Hit Liquor is one of many songs that appears on the new Shudder To Think live album being released by Team Love soon. You can grab that track for free HERE.

Pattern is Movement and Blame the Patient opened the Bowery show. More pictures below...

Also, Kevin March was not the drummer for the whole reunion. Adam Wade (A former STT drummer (who also played in Jawbox)) played with STT on the west coast dates of the reunion.

Alot of anger on here today...MEHybe everyone should chillax fo' a minute.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 4:04 PM

This looks egotastic.

Cool that Chris Matthews played a couple songs, since he probably wrote half the material on the live LP.

Best troll ever

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 4:08 PM

Awkward? Nah. It was excellent. Blame The Patient are awesome. Very sweet kids who completely rock and write excellent hooks. Pattern is Movement are not really my thing, but their drummer is so insanely good that it kept things interesting between rum-and-cokes. And despite the fact that Nathan wasn't there, and his cool-guy stage presence didn't provide the necessary distraction from CW's smarminess, Shudder To Think still sounded great. Kevin March in particular was on fire.

I just read on here that this show sucked..Is that true?

Posted by The Mighty KC | September 3, 2009 4:25 PM

"Kevin March was not the drummer for the whole reunion. "

thanks! updated.

Posted by brooklynvegan | September 3, 2009 4:34 PM

I was a little disappointed. Is it really a reunion if it's only one original guy? That's not the show I bought tickets for. There was a mass exodus down to the bar when the orchestra came on and not everyone came back. good overall, but ehh...

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 4:35 PM

Nate was missed, but it was still a great show (the 50,000 B.C. songs were a most-welcome addition to the setlist), and Pattern Is Movement were also good. And if you read this, girl with the curly blonde hair and large eyes standing near the front left side of the stage - you are SO gorgeous, and I really wanted to say hello, but wasn't sure if that dude was your boyfriend.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 4:41 PM

Annonymous at 4:35 is a liar. There was no mass exodus.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 5:27 PM

yes, this show sucked. I should have followed everyone out when the the orchestra came on.

Thurston Moore was there

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 5:39 PM

The show was excellent and they sounded great. Would have been nice to see Nathan and Stu play, but the bassist (Jesse Krakow) and other guitarist (Mark Watrous) nailed it. I thought the ACME stuff was good too.

I am definitely missing some stuff here, particularly their earlier stuff from Goat and Funeral, but the set was something like this, and not exactly in this order:

Jade-Dust Eyes
Pebbles
Lies About the Sky
9 Fingers on You
She's A Skull
Beauty Strike
Gang of $
Red House
Day Ditty
new tunes with ACME
Hit Liquor
Call of the Playground
Saddest Day of My Life
X-French Tee Shirt
Ballad of Maxwell Demon
Alone in Love
Survival
Lullabye

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 5:45 PM

sounds almost as good as midi:

Part 2 (all w/ ACME):

Craig told me they were going to play Love Catastrophe after Lies About the Sky but it got cut for some reason.

Really great show... I'll be the one to say it: Larson was really missed. Close your eyes and it sounded like (gasp) Shudder To Think. Came across less as a "reunion" show and more as a "new beginning" show, especially with the new material. "9 Fingers On You" sounded as good, if not better, as it ever has. I was one happy customer!

Also cool: they had the live cd available for advance purchase at the merch stand. Score!

Not cool (of me): They were selling Shudder To Think onesies also and I neglected to score one. Doh! Anyone buy an extra one they wanna hook me up with?

Posted by Spider Wisdom | September 3, 2009 9:39 PM

Whoops! Meant to type (as evident by the context): I'll be the one to say it: Larson wasn't really missed.

Yeah, Watrous had it covered.

Posted by Spider Wisdom | September 3, 2009 9:45 PM

What are you talking about saying people left when ACME came on???? I actaully remember thinking when they took the stage - oh boy, people are gonna leave - and was watching for it. BUT THEY DIDN'T. Dude, you're nuts. There was no exodus at all, AND being there was worth it. I'm not saying I agree with her, but my wife thought that was the best part of the show.

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 10:39 PM

What's this "Sort of" ? there were so many incarnations of STT, and every line up made great music. Just hearing Craig & Co play all of these songs live in one show was wonderful. Some of you are just hatin' a little too hard. I agree the guitar player last night definitely had it covered. Great show!

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2009 10:44 PM

Forgot to post this when I wrote up the setlist.

This was my first Shudder show (I'm not lucky enough to live in NYC) and I thought it was amazing. It would have been nice to see Nathan, but Spider is right: Watrous had it covered - esp. on Hit Liquor. I personally could have done without so much 50,000 BC, but there was so much other great stuff played I've got no room to complain. I Listened to Live From Home today and some of the stuff from last night is actually better than the stuff on the disc. I for one can't wait to see what Craig does next with Jefferson Friedman - On In Love is the best new music I've heard in years. I think the two of them together are as potent a combination as Craig and Nathan were on Pony Express.

Posted by Jitterbean | September 3, 2009 10:59 PM

Not STT as the ticket and venue announced. It was "Craig Sings STT" - I for one was expecting Nate and Stu.

I felt really ripped off.

If the bill had been "Craig Sings STT" I probably wouldn't have gone.

Bait and switch, dude.

Sorry.

Posted by jmg | September 4, 2009 12:34 AM

This "sort of", 10:44, is regarding the fact that one guy from Shudder To Think (1986-199mostoftheiroutput) played last night. It is more than a bit of a stretch to call whatever happened last night "Shudder To Think".

And I sincerely am glad if you enjoyed it..but it should be billed as Craig Wedren (or whatever he likes). Not Shudder.

Posted by Anonymous | September 4, 2009 2:48 AM

They ruled when I saw them at Webster Hall last October.

Posted by Anonymous | September 4, 2009 5:26 AM

There have been a lot of different line ups to STT. Craig is the only consistant - and the most distinctive member (Stu isn't on the new live record). So you're mad that the show didn't have the exact line up that YOU wanted? Get over it. Great show.

Posted by Anonymous | September 4, 2009 7:51 AM

Wasn't this show a record release party FOR a live record from the reunion tour (which features Nathan)last year, and not billed as a "reunion" show itself? I went back to the Bowery calendar and didn't see the word "reunion" on it.

Posted by Anonymous | September 4, 2009 7:55 AM

Yes, it should have been billed as Craig Wedren...and then the place would have been even less full.

Posted by Anonymous | September 4, 2009 9:19 AM

Nothing from the Velvet Goldmine soundtrack?

Posted by Regular reader | September 4, 2009 10:58 AM

Maxwell Demon from Velvet Goldmine was an encore, and the place looked pretty full to me.

Posted by Anonymous | September 4, 2009 11:39 AM

There was no bait & switch. This was the same band that's been playing as Shudder To Think for the past few years, minus Larson. So, while it seems reasonable that one would be disappointed with Larson's absence, it seems unreasonable to expect Stu to be there. Chris Matthews showed up and played two songs for frak's sake, if you wanna talk about the real Shudder To Think!

Posted by Spider Wisdom | September 4, 2009 3:52 PM

Regarding the alleged "mass exodus"-- I was standing against the wall at the back by the stairs, and yes, a group of about four or five people retreated during the ACME set, loudly and obnoxiously calling the music awful. They then pounded drinks at the bar while continually braying at the top of their lungs, which was distracting, to say the least.

Not exactly a "mass exodus," but they certainly made it sound like one.

I hadn't seen StT since maybe 1992, and had only randomly heard about the show a few hours before the set started, while in town on business. I was really pleased with the show, especially that they played five songs from the old days so I actually recognized some of the music. ;)

Posted by Anonymous | September 5, 2009 10:58 PM

The show was great. I would have liked to hear some more of the oooold STT shit, but no such luck. I have to say that there was somewhat of an exodus when the orchestra came out, and there were a shit load of annoying hipsters there, which was weak, but expected.

Posted by Nick | September 5, 2009 11:37 PM

@SpiderWisdom:
Watrous' playing was adequate, but lacked the soul and many of the notes of Larson's playing. In fact, they had to restart one of the songs as Mark effed the intro.
Don't remember which one, was last year.

Anyway, I had a great time and glad to cap the 15+ years I've been into 'em with a live CD.
cheers.
