the Pavement reunion is on - multiple nights @ Central Park Summerstage in 2010 + a tour? + Coachella? + ATP?

"Pavement embarked on a six month world tour in support of [Terror Twilight], during which time relationships within the group frayed, especially between Malkmus and the other members of the band. Steve West later recalled times on the tour bus where the singer would put his coat over his head, refuse to speak to anyone, and call himself "The Little Bitch". Critics noted that their setlist had started to include a number of their early songs, much like a band playing their greatest hits on a farewell tour. The lead singer's attitude continued to deteriorate as the tour wore on, finally coming to a head during their slot at the 1999 Coachella Festival. During the concert, Malkmus refused (or was possibly unable, due to illness) to sing, effectively turning their set into a mostly instrumental one. Nastanovich called a band meeting after the show, and Malkmus finally confided to his band-mates: "I just don't want to do this anymore."One of the most popular indie rock rumor topics of this decade is the reformation of Pavement. The group's final concert together was at Brixton Academy in London on November 20, 1999. During the concert, Malkmus had a pair of handcuffs attatched to his microphone stand, and at one point told that audience, "These symbolize what it's like being in a band all these years." After the concert, he confirmed to people at the after-party that Pavement was now done "for the foreseeable future." About two weeks later, a spokesperson for Domino records told NME: "Pavement are retiring for the forseeable future to: 1. Start families 2. Sail around the world 3. Get into the computer industry 4. Dance 5. Get some attention."
In the summer of 2000, Malkmus called Kannberg and told him, "You need to change the website to say we aren't a band anymore. People keep asking me if we're breaking up and you know we're not a band anymore, right?" Kannberg told the singer that he needed to call the other members of the band to inform them that the band was finally breaking up, but Malkmus refused and Kannberg was left with the task of informing them. Steve West later admitted that he never received any official call about the breakup from anyone in the band, and discovered that Pavement had dissolved via the internet. Nastanovich later commented that "There was too much exhaustion for heavy emotion." [Wikipedia]
According to reliable sources, it's finally happening in 2010! There will be multiple, possibly four, nights of shows at NYC's Central Park Summerstage in September of that year. That could be part of a tour. That could be the end of a tour, the middle of a tour, or even the beginning of a tour, but it seems reasonable to speculate that they might make their official comeback at Coachella in April.
It's also time to start guessing who might be the big curator of September 2010's ATP NY festival (the job Flaming Lips had this year, and My Bloody Valentine the year before that). Might as well put Pavement high on the list of possibilities for that too.

I believe it actually says "multiple, possibly four, nights of shows at NYC's Central Park Summerstage"

As a fan of the band, I've actually been hoping that this day would never come. Just let it be, fellas. It was wonderful when it happened and you left us with a lot of great music. Don't cheapen it now.

Last time I saw them they opened for My Bloody Valentine and Superchunk at the Ritz.
Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2009 8:06 PM
MBV/Superchunk/Pavement show sounds insane. majorly jealous. and they could pull off four nights at summerstage. i'm going as long as tickets aren't too ridiculously expensive...

7:59pm nailed it but this has nothing to do with Pavement possibly reuniting. It has more to do with lack of sphincter control.

September 15, 2009 8:12 PM : It was great. I still remember how fucking loud MBV were. I rememeber my GF at the time holding her ears during the feedback barrage at the end of their set. I only saw Pavement a couple of times but they were always really tight live.

they better play at Coachella

Hoping for an exclusive first reunion show at ATP.

is that the best you can do? copy from wikipedia? I'd prefer to hear it officially from the band rather than your "reliable source"

Why the hype? The only Pavement show that sold out in NYC was the one in support of the Matador 10th anniversary party. They never sold too many tickets. Remember the reaction when they played Lollapalooza on Randall's Island? No one was there to see them.
Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2009 9:04 PM
This sounds too good to be true - so it probably is.
But, then again, people must have been saying that about rumored Pixies reunion, Dinosaur Jr., etc.
Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2009 9:04 PM
Okay now I think its safe to assume that we're all jacking off in our cum rags to this news.

Why the hype? The only Pavement show that sold out in NYC was the one in support of the Matador 10th anniversary party. They never sold too many tickets.
>>> so very , very wrong...
they sold 3 nights at Irving Plaza on one of their tours... also I remember being at a sold out Roseland show (Guided By Voices opened) sure they didn't consistently do 3000-4000 people but they are legendary and there are a lot more new fans out there that never saw them & a ton who would love to see them again... all that being said I think this reunion stuff is extremely speculative but we live in a "it was on the internet so it must be true" world these days..
Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2009 9:12 PM
lets not forget they sold out the old westbeth theater. they were always a strong draw, especially in new york, and if it is four nights at summerstage it will sell out immediately no doubt.
this is great. and to the fans who are doubtful, i understand, but they are so perfect for a reunion. ibold, malkmus, and sstairs have all been playing music consistently (has west?) and their age isn't an issue (not really "old") and their stage show was never about the moonwalk. plus i never got the impression that they hated each other, just got exhausted and worn out. its gonna be a lot of fun. this is the awesome.

when is this NOT a rumor?
believing "reliable sources" about Pavement reunions is a bit like believing Wikipedia

This is definitely happening---the reunion that is. I know nothing regarding where they will play. But really---who cares? Pavement was a terrible live band. I love the records but I never walked away from a Pavement show thinking that I had seen anything close to good.

I guess what this means is Malkmus is broke.
Posted by Joey Noodles | September 15, 2009 10:27 PM
with the way things have built up in the post pitchfork era, they will probably make more money off of doing this for a few months than they made in their entire previous career

fuck the summerstage.

I refuse to pay this any (nicene) credence until I hear this from the ever disenchanted mouth of Malkmus, himself.
This is just like how they were definitely going to reunite for Matador's last big anniversary.
JUST LIKE IT.

i will only go if the kid from the crooked rain irving plaza show jumps back on stage, all four nights, to take a picture with malkmus. must be disposable camera. at random times. one of my fave bands. hopefully this isn't a rouse.
Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2009 10:56 PM
from what I've heard committed to tape Pavement always comes off sounding really choppy and incoherent live. They're obviously capable of creating awesome sound but I guess it doesn't shock me to learn that Malkmus was sorta bored on stage all those years with all the lackadaisical playing and improv.

Joey Noodles,
Yes. Hence the $90 crooked rain reissue on vinyl.
Sincerely,

Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2009 11:55 PM
That would be a couple of shows in my computer. I do find it hard to believe they never sold out any shows even though they were never big stars. S & E was a pretty popular album with the indie kids.
Posted by Anonymous | September 15, 2009 11:56 PM
11:01,
i probably like all those bands more than Pavement too (except lush and boards), but like all others before you, what's your fucking point? can nobody enjoy the possibility of a Pavement reunion because they're not Neutral Milk Hotel?

handcuffs on a mic stand is worse than steven tyler's bandana scarves. so sorry you were in a band where you had to interact with people equally. what a douche.

I really like Pavement. I would be severely disappointed if this news turned out to be false. Boy, would I like to go see my favorite band live.
I am going to wait for Matador to announce it before I truly celebrate and mentally prepare myself.
I sure do like them. And I am pretty sure a lot of other people do too.
Posted by Anonymous | September 16, 2009 12:19 AM
if there was one band on BV that I thought users wouldn't "meh" it would be pavement, honestly surprised
also to that guy who said that a blur reunion would top this, didn't they just play glastonbury?
Posted by monsoonseason | September 16, 2009 12:29 AM
As a BV user...I refer to them as PaveMEHnt.
Actually since I was alive in their heyday I consider them the most overrated band of that entire time period. The only band with lots of hype that bummed me out more was Superchunk. Superchunk almost ruined my Helmet experience in 1990 by sucking so bad before Helmet went on that I almost left. Thank fuck I didn't since Helmet blew my 18 year old mind.

Posted by Anonymous | September 16, 2009 1:11 AM
12:53 nailed it too
Posted by Anonymous | September 16, 2009 1:19 AM
I'd go but I wouldn't be all that excited about it. They were good but not great. They were cooler than most of today's bands however. Oh yeah, count me in on pooping on Kanye. Never understood what anyone ever saw in that loser. Or his friends Jay Z and Rhianna for that matter. All hype.

The Smiths suck. Go cry in a corner.
Good for Pavement. Can't wait!
Posted by Anonymous | September 16, 2009 1:42 AM

Is there any truth to FUGAZI reuniting? That would trump everything!
Posted by Anonymous | September 16, 2009 2:38 AM
Its true...many people have known that their agent was just waiting for the right price. The word was already out there. They've been 'seeding' the newer generation by re-releasing all of their old material in preparation for the reunion. Like the Pixies, they'll make more money on this tour than they did during their entire career. Good for them...they deserve it! BTW, first BIG show will be Coachella...
Posted by Anonymous | September 16, 2009 2:44 AM

Posted by Anonymous | September 16, 2009 2:57 AM
Coachella 2010 will look like this:
Pavement, Blur, Air, Massive Attack, Arctic Monkeys, LCD Soundsystem, Tiesto, Justice, Vampire Weekend, MGMT, Echo & the Bunnymen, Devo, Madness, Sunny Day Real Estate, Phoenix, Royksopp, Wolfmother, Florence & the Machine, Gossip, La Roux, Little Boots, Bat for Lashes, Dirty Projectors, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Little Joy, Amanda Blank, The Raveonettes, Birdy Nam Nam, some Marley, with Jay-Z, Muse, and whatever the biggest name is that they can get (Radiohead or Bowie or Daft or Neil or Pearl Jam or The Who or a big reunion) for headliners.
Posted by Anonymous | September 16, 2009 3:02 AM
why would they play both atp nyc and multiple nights in Central Park in the same month. That doesn't seem very likely to me. I've seen them say that they were waiting for the right amount of money to reunite so some festival has to be involved and my money is on it being coachella.
Posted by summerkid | September 16, 2009 3:11 AM

I became a Pavement fan after they broke up and would absolutely LOVE to see them live. As for them sounding shitty at shows, how can you not understand that when you play the same songs with the same guys for 10 years, you tend to get a little worn out and the passion fizzles. Dude, they were Nirvana's favorite opening act. I listen to Pavement regularly and they were a fantastic band. Out of tune guitars and off key singing and they not only pull it off, but it sounds good!!! Gary Young(original drummer for 1 album) was a fuckin' mess!!! He was hammered drunk 24/7. They had to replace him. I appreciate classic bands and inventive new sound, but FUCK MORRISEY!! I'd like to poop on him AND kanye at the same time!!!

Posted by Anonymous | September 16, 2009 9:51 AM
"could someone seriously explain the significance of this band to me? did they do something musically innovative"
They were the first -- or anyway, the best -- to pull off a perfect blend of elements from Sonic Youth, The Fall, etc. on the one hand, Sticky Fingers-era Stones on the other -- which around 1992 was quite a feat. The guitar playing was equal parts Thurston/Ranaldo and Mick Taylor/Keith -- a combination that at the time was very, very surprising. It was neither straight indie/punk, nor classic rock, but a successful blend of some of the best elements of each.
And that's just one way they were innovative.

Hey, my Nan told me that Phil Lynot will be joining Sonic Youth to replace Mark Ibold when he goes back to Pavement. Also, Lou Barlow's brother Ken mentioned that the new Sebadoh album sounds like The Killers and that they're going to be headlining the Mars landing at the Blahblahblahblah Festival in 2092. If anyone knows what's going on with WCKR SPGT, keep schtum, no one cares. Sadly.

I guess Stephen Malkmus wanted to keep his claim to being the coolest Pavement member, and was worried that Mark Ibold stole that by joining Sonic Youth.
(119 comments and not one reference to the Ibold? For shame...)

I am surprised by the negativity among BV commenters about Pavement. I'm beginning to think these commenters don't have anything nice to say about any band. I mean, I've said some bad things about a few bands that really piss me off, having to sit through Fuck Buttons or Titus Andronicus opening at the pool for instance, but isn't Pavement really popular among indie folk? I'm confused.. I think they'd be perfect for ATP, and I would also think that half the people on here making poop and dick jokes will in reality be waiting in line for Summer Stage wearing tight pants and bad flannel...
Posted by Anonymous | September 16, 2009 12:08 PM
@11:04, there are obvious (at least to me) similarities between the Maps and Pavement's early singles and the 10".
Posted by Anonymous | September 16, 2009 12:16 PM
i never thought i'd see the day when WCKR SPGT was referenced on BV.
that day has come.
the one time i saw Wingtip Sloat, they opened w/ a cover of "Trigger Cut" which was a brilliant move.

pavement is the most boring bland dull uninspiring poster child for the worst part of the 90s wave of indie rock that almost drowned american music for ever....since yo la tengo.
music for old people//pitchfork.
pretty much like everything from drag city.

Pavement = underrated

Someone compared this shitty little ironic 90s band to the combo of Mick Taylor and Keith Richards? Pavement versus peak-era Rolling Stones? HA HA HA! Pavement should more likely be compared to the combo of Pee Wee Herman and Tiny Tim.

@3:32, 2:47 here. No, Callahan/Smog isn't indie rock. Your definition is no good. He's a highly literate musician who has done an amazing transformation from no-fi bedroom scribblings (you can come over to listen to my LP copy of _Sewn To The Sky_ if you wish) to a non-lush Leonard Cohen output. I see you also conveniently avoided mentioning any other DC artist.
Teen? That's funny.

Hey, the BV review sucks - why focus on minor and breakup dramas and barely talk about the music? Reads like a soap opera.
And seriously, if you're hating on Pavement, you're either some kid who hasn't heard anything beyond "Cut Yr Hair" or a hate-defining hipster who only likes bands that haven't formed yet. And yes, we are laughing at you behind your back.
go back to those gold soundz

BIG SOURCE: More info? This is like the vaguest "news" story ever. 3 slightly credible websites posting stories citing "reliable" sources, yet no word from anyone official, and now some other man/woman is debunking the "reliable" info? Is this all just an elaborate prank?

I like what Stephen Malkmus did on the tour bus- put his coat over his head.
I would have done that too.
I think that when the pressure of being around eachother and forcing yourself to be close friends for ten years in that whole atmosphere
I would do that too. Or, I would travel seperately.
Here is what I would do to keep the dream alive:
1)EVerybody is allowed side projects with NO breaking up, just hiatuses however long.
Like friends.
2)Tour seperate from the others if you are NATURALLY severely depressed. In a seperate bus, on a motorcycle, on a ten speed, on a train whatever. Plan it out. The whole band is allowed this luxury of seperation.
3)Show up for ALL rehearsels. Stay in a seperate hotel, motel, tent, whatever.
4)Hang out with them for jamming , talking, whatever for a long time at least once a week. COnnect on a regular basis even if it hurts.
After people have discovered magic together and it comes naturally to them- they are magic.
They should always allow themselves to be magic again.

Look for an announcement from us soon. Obviously this isn't the last word.

Reunion is always something special that brings in lots of old memories and nostalgia.
But very few could attain the height after re-union as the flow that they were in once, no longer seems to come-back.
Anyway, est of luck to the "Pavement".

if they haven't spoken up by now, they're not reliable sources.
