Sunny Day Real Estate

City Pages: So what got you guys talking seriously about doing this reunion? What was the turning point?tonight in NYCDan Hoerner: I think the turning point was Nate. He had the opening in his schedule--Nate's very much involved with the Foo Fighters--and it was the perfect time for everybody and Nate was kind of the impetus. I had no inkling, no idea that it was even a possibility. If you had asked me even one day before Nate called me if I expected Nate to call me within the next five years, I would have laughed. So when he gave me the shout, what am I going to say? I'm busy? No: I was like, "YES! Tell me when!" It was Nate. Ultimately, everybody had the time and everybody was in the right place to do it, and to get the push from Nate and to know that Nate's got a whole team of people he works with now that are fantastic, so just all the stars aligned in the right way.

U2 should've closed last night's SNL with Poison's "Talk Dirty to Me" and dedicated it to Jenny Slate.

Did anyone else get problems with the security? They tried to start shit with everyone I went with for no reason. Something was up their asses. The guy was inspecting everything as closely as possible, that I didn't care about, but he kept staring me down and asking "You gotta problem? Huh?" when he let me go through he was acting like it was a favor. I'd complain but I know nothing will be done. Last time I go there jesus.

Show was amazing, but I have to admit that I was really hoping to ready "Sunny Meh Real Estate" here.
These comments are getting too grown.

How was the Jealous Sound?
Posted by Anonymous | September 28, 2009 10:57 AM
since it was an emo show i feel it's appropriate to get emo here.
the greatest thing about the show last night was looking around at all of the other people there and knowing that they were all (most? there were some youngins there) being taken back to that certain era of their life when sdre was a soundtrack. lots of air drumming and smiles.
Posted by Anonymous | September 28, 2009 11:23 AM
show of the year! yeah everyone had smiles on their faces....the band seemed to be taken back alittle bit by the love the crowd was giving them.
Posted by Anonymous | September 28, 2009 11:50 AM
so pissed i missed this show, theyll be touring more, right?
Posted by Anonymous | September 28, 2009 12:14 PM
Jealous Sound sucked. Generic emo crap.
Posted by Anonymous | September 28, 2009 12:20 PM
Sunny Day were amazing. I was very surprised that they played "Grendel" and "Spade and Parade".
"Song About An Angel" and "48" were absolutely incredible... (although Jeremy can't quite scream on "48" the way he used to).
And the crowd... wow... with all the talk about shitty crowds in NY these days... last night everyone was totally into it. All smiles and jumping up and down. Seemed like the majority of people had seen them before.
For me... it was definitely a trip back to 1994. I enjoyed the last couple of reunion tours... but it was really cool seeing Sunny Day not touring in support of anything... just playing lots of early material. And the band seemed to be having the time of their lives. very cool stuff, indeed.

@d-rock: tm;dr (too meh; didn't read)

I dont think any of the comments were written by people at the show. It was ok. The set list could have been better. After a few songs, the audience looked bored. Most of their earlier songs sound the same. They were so much better when I saw them in 98. It was good to see Jeremy back on stage, but a dissapointing reunion for a band that could have performed so much more from their catalog.
Posted by Tammy | September 28, 2009 1:54 PM
what the hell does "too meh" mean? that comment is too meh.
Posted by Anonymous | September 28, 2009 2:09 PM
it was a good show, but I prefer the fire theft. i expected a better set too, but it was worth 30 bucks. we got what we paid for.
guitar and videogames killed!
Posted by Anonymous | September 28, 2009 2:14 PM
it seemed like most of the crowd was singing to every song (except the new one), and the cheering when the band came on for the encore was super super loud....I could have listened for another hour at least

Were you at the show? Seriously? The first two albums are their best material and it was amazing to hear it played so well last night. I didn't see anybody who was very bored at all.
Posted by Anonymous | September 28, 2009 2:20 PM
"How it Feels..." is their best album.
Posted by truth | September 28, 2009 3:01 PM
I'm guessing you are talking about the black guy security guard? I thought he was looking to fight because he did the same to me and my girl. All security have chips on their shoulders.

I suppose you liked The Fire Theft as well?

"How it feels" SUCKS. Thats why they didnt play it jack ass!
The show was weak. No more 90s band reunions!
Posted by da troof | September 28, 2009 4:31 PM
@3:35
I did not like The Fire Theft.
I love the first 2, but use your ears, How it Feels is much more textured, nuanced and melodic than Diary and LP2, by far.
Posted by truth | September 28, 2009 4:35 PM
the show was boring. who ever said the audience were singing along to every song is another bullshitter commenting on every thing this blog posts about. you obviously were not there.
Enigk is better solo.
Posted by Anonymous | September 28, 2009 4:43 PM
@ uh, da troof,
No, the reason they didn't play it is because it's a tour to promote the re-release of the first 2 albums, but thanks for playing, you needlessly angry man.
Posted by truth | September 28, 2009 4:48 PM
you losers missed Japandroids last night?? ha!
Posted by Anonymous | September 28, 2009 4:50 PM
oh no... i missed another japandroids show... i think i'll kill myself now.
Posted by Anonymous | September 28, 2009 5:00 PM
you really should.
Posted by Anonymous | September 28, 2009 5:08 PM
"how it feels to be something on" was bad. i am pretty sure the band were unsatisfied with that one. the tour has been the same set list every night. obviously, they dont like "how it feels..."
"Diary" is their most mature and innovative record. they were never that good again. that is why they broke up.
that is the truth- Truth^^^
Posted by Scott | September 28, 2009 5:11 PM
Diary is the only good album. The show was great!
Posted by Anonymous | September 28, 2009 5:14 PM
no... I'm pretty sure they are playing mostly stuff off the 1st two albums (and a b-side) with the exception of "guitar and video games"... is that they are touring with Nate Mendel for the first time in nearly 15 years. It's a "Diary" and "LP2" era lineup. (not to mention those albums were just re-released.) Nate didn't play on those albums and, while I'm sure he's familiar with them... they're focusing on the stuff he DID play with them. For now, anyway.
That said... if they keep on touring... I'd be very surprised if they didn't break out some songs from "How It Feels..." and "The Rising Tide". Those are both really solid albums, and if you saw SDRE on either of those tours... you'd know that those songs fucking ROCK live. "Every Shining Time You Arrive" might be their best song. "Killed By An Angel"... that song rocksssss (especially live)!

Scott (5:11) doesn't know what he's talking about.
