Yeah Yeah Yeahs @ MHOW in Brooklyn - pics & setlist
photos by Ryan Muir

Huck Magazine: Did the Karen O stage persona exist before the Yeah Yeah Yeahs?A set of pictures from last night's show that includes a shot of the setlist, below...Karen O: I remember when I was in, like, the fifth grade, I was a really shy kid and I went to a school where there were only like sixteen kids in my grade, and there's a variety show type thing and I remember I put on these really dark sunglasses so I couldn't see - they were like the darkest sunglasses I've ever worn, I couldn't see anything, and I did The Beatles, I lip-synched to The Beatles' 'Twist and Shout', exactly. Jaws were dropping, because they couldn't believe that that was the same person. Because I had no inhibitions and I really milked it for what it was worth. It blew the teachers' minds, because I was a really quiet little kid... It's been brewing for a while.

Why do "requests" when theyre written on the set...?

dope photos, moto.

i'd say karen o IS the greatest performer of our time.

spectacular photos of a spectacular show

This was an amazing show. I've seen them a few times, and it was up there as one of the best. Tremendous energy and great crowd. Folks were filming it, supposedly for a DVD. Who knows if that's true, but if so, would be a good one.
Posted by DC | September 30, 2009 1:54 PM
setlist?
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 1:54 PM
When was last time they played "Art Star"? That was the highlight for me.
P.S. Wish they could have squeezed "Pin" on their set....
Posted by Jonny Greenwood is the man | September 30, 2009 1:55 PM
ha, she faked the requests and made it seemed like the audience requested those songs. nice! honestly, i think they're great performers but the music isn't great. the first 7 or so songs were just limp. all the antics and confetti and costume make me think of Of Montreal and they're better musically speaking. take away all YYY's flash and you're left with an empty pan. i'm glad i didn't have to pay for the show last night. not hating, just sayin'
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 1:55 PM
Machine killed me, fried me, massacred me, spit in my face and broke a pint glass over my head and now they won't let me board the plane because my head is bleeding
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 2:00 PM
Maybe have them written down because they are songs they have rehearsed? If they request a song they haven't played in a long time there is great potential for embarrassment and sadness.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 2:00 PM
looks like she had a better costume at Radio City
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 2:18 PM
My balls are really really big (literally) but i think i could fit both of them in Karen's mouth at the same time easily. Now that would make her the greatest performer of our time.
So please go die you overhyping jackasses

Great pictures.

some people take life way too seriously.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 2:34 PM
ok 2:24 douche, who would you list as greatest performers of our time?
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 2:34 PM
best show ever!
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 2:43 PM
anyone that goes as far as to claim karen O as one of the greatest performers of out time is simply moronic. the hype-machine has fed those of you that can't think for yourselves and in turn you continue to feed the hype.

Harry Potter opened the show? Ninth picture down from top--"wave that wand Harry!"

"some people take life way too seriously."
SO TRUE
like anon(s) 2:43, 2:34, 2:00, 1:43, 1:46
Seriously enough with the over hyping exaggerating. Get a clue you fuckheads with your "killed" "destroyed" stupidity. You just beg for a beat down when you do that.

thanks 2:58

It was a fun show, but nothing mind-blowing. I am a casual fan of YYYs, and this was my first show. I liked it, but would not speak of it, them, or her in superlatives.
She has a lot of energy, for sure, but I think the stand-out in the group is actually the drummer. They'd be fucked w/o him, imo.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 3:07 PM
they didn't do "Honey Bear" did they? don't remember that at all.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 3:10 PM
i prefer Yeasayer and Yo La Tengo, not so much Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Yacht, Yoko Ono, Youth Group, Yellow Fever and def NOT Your Vegas.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 3:21 PM
3:10... they definitely played "Honey Bear".
Awesome show last night. Tons of fun.

To 2:58pm:
May I suggest you relax a bit? There’s no need to talk about “beat downs”. It’s a rock concert. If you didn’t enjoy it (or didn’t go), that’s a shame, but I’m sure you’ll get over that. For those who did enjoy it, allow them their moment of happiness.
Posted by Brian | September 30, 2009 3:41 PM
best show ever? Seems like that happens 3 times a week nowadays.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 3:45 PM
I saw YYYs a few years ago, and I was kinda bored. Maybe it was just me?
Posted by fact | September 30, 2009 3:47 PM
Karen O looks a bit like Phil Spector, no?
Posted by Tin Lizzie | September 30, 2009 3:57 PM
i think it was just you...
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 3:59 PM
Unbelievable performance. Great audience, small venue, good vibes. Fun night all around. Still one of the only "indie" shows that actually puts on a "show." I've seen them a bunch of times and they are still rocking it.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 4:07 PM
I have a question... What's the deal with backing tracks? Do you have to get to a certain status to use them? What's the deal? People in the know let me know.
Posted by anonymous2 | September 30, 2009 4:14 PM
Great photos, too bad their music blows..
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 4:16 PM
wish i could've gone last night... stupid calculus test. at least i aced it. but yeah, show looks like it was great! i agree that karen o is one of the greatest performers of our time.

Wow, I`m sure that concert was probably the highlight of most of those people`s lives (and I dont mean that as a putdown...I mean that in that it looked monumental).
Fu**ing tickets sold out within 6 minutes of going on sale....I kept hitting refresh for 6 minutes hoping to get in. Oh well, I`ll always have APW
Posted by Dr N | September 30, 2009 5:20 PM
What Is she lady gaga now? I didnt think they would sell out like they did. Its Blitz shouldve been titled "It Sucks- We Sold Out" I was really let down by it after hearing "Fever to tell" and "Show your bones" which are awesome records. That whole album is pop disco, club, radio bullshit. They alienated their fan base to become a trend. And as far as greatest performer of our time? Ha, our time isnt over yet. Stop with the over hype.
Posted by herh | September 30, 2009 5:22 PM
I think the Residents put on a better show. There not concerned with dumb vapid lyrics, and paint by numbers art student sheepish image. Its all about their B.S. aura and hype, because without that their music is horrible.
Great hair and costumes. Like a talent show without the music worth hearing and with an inflated ego.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 5:37 PM
I dug the costumes, too.
At least one group out there isn't donning bunny suits or regressing to childhood story-time outfits.
Posted by '74 Mercury Grand Marquis | September 30, 2009 5:53 PM
all I can say is:
I was center stage, leaning against the stage
Karen sprayed water on me
I got her towel
they played almost all my favorite songs (however I also wish they squeezed in pin)
and three hours before the show I didn't have a ticket
THAT is why it will forever be one of the best shows I've ever been to
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 7:00 PM
the yeah yeah yeahs are anything but about the hype, they're just growing in popularity, there is a difference
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 7:01 PM
2003 was the year for yyy
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 7:38 PM
any implication that karen o steals originality in costumes from lady gaga is completely ridiculous. educate yourself.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 9:21 PM
2001 was the year for the MEH MEH MEHs
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 9:38 PM
nick goes into his dark closet (which has no lights), eyes closed, and comes out with same outfit every time. coincidence?
Posted by donn | September 30, 2009 9:39 PM
Highlight of my night was the ticket window girl....yowsa!
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 9:47 PM
ticket window girl is a trannie.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 10:48 PM
Haha look at you guys talking about going to Williamsburg, look at you hipster fruits.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 10:49 PM
I wish the internet wasn't just a soapbox for fucktards.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 11:39 PM
Has there ever been a person who exhibits a wider gulf between level of sexiness and actual attractiveness than Karen O? Seriously, she looks like an Easter Island head with a wig, but she's ridiculously rock-star sexy.
Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2009 11:42 PM
11:39 Shut up fucktard.
Posted by Venkman | October 1, 2009 12:04 AM
7pm, you are a complete loser. Seriously.
Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2009 12:50 AM
I think the Residents (the San Francisco group)had some commentary also about the hulking shallow garbage that is this Williamsburg transplant fashion movement masquerading as music and some how original. Well not them in particular but the whole lot of this rock star narcissism that pervades "cultural" nowadays acting as modest independent music. Bands like these Williamsburg kids remind the rest of the world that the rock star snarl and posing is similar to 80's hair metal crap.
Shes gross and Zinner has that indie art student outfit. The swish hair, black shoes, tight black pants, and older button up shirt. Come on its so obvious.
Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2009 3:02 AM
ditto, 7pm you are indeed a loser and 11:42, i agree completely, nice point
Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2009 4:56 AM
Great pix Ryan, seriously.
Posted by joly | October 1, 2009 4:56 AM
Karen O is the best example of an "Ugly-Hot" chick whose face is busted, but still exudes sexiness wth her confidence and swagger. Definitely more common in the music world than in real life. Other "Ugly-Hot Chick All-Stars" include PJ Harvey, Siouxie Sioux and the aforementioned Lady Gaga.
Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2009 9:48 AM
Shes great! I love her voice. Shut the fuck up with the ranking. They put on a good show. She moves wonderfully.
Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2009 2:12 PM
shut the fuck up, all of you. you are all fucking stupid retards
Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2009 5:40 PM
ticket window girl might have been a tranny. but she was cool. the window at MHOW is always so slow and terrible and everybody was so pissed... but at least she understood some basic precepts of "crowd control"
