a member of The xx is taking a break? dates canceled

Baria Quereshi @ the NBC Experience Store (more by Tim Griffin)
The xx

Rumours were rife that The xx guitarist Baria Quereshi had left the group after she decided not to play at their gig at the Village Underground in Shoreditch last night.

The band declared they were "devastated" at her absence.

The Quietus favourites took to the stage without Baria, prompting bassist and singer Oliver Sim to tell the crowd: "Obviously this has been a really tough few days for us. This is the first time we've played as a three piece...

...He added that although the band had been forced to cancel their European tour dates, they planned to discuss their future after the weekend, and described Baria's absence as a temporary break rather than anything more permanent.

The statement said: "Baria didn't perform last night after feeling exhausted from The xx's recent touring commitments. As a result, the band performed as a 3 piece in London last night and have postponed some European shows which they are hoping to reschedule. They are next due to play in Frankfurt on 3rd November." [The Quietus]

The xx were just in NYC over the weekend and played a bunch of CMJ-related shows, including one in an NBC store (pictured above), and a Saturday late night set at the Tribeca Grand Hotel. Videos from the latter below...

No offense, but that woman pretty much takes a break throughout their set. Band really just needs the two leads and a prerecorded drum track. It's uncomfortable watching extraneous members just stand around.

Her last name is "Quereshi" -- not "Queresh" (as spelled on the photo caption).

@J11:21 - I totally agree that Baria didn't add much at all. That being said, I think the goofy kid playing the live beats is more visually interesting than if it were just the two leads and a drum machine. Still...simply not a very captivating live act regardless.

Horrible hype band....seriously I left after watching 2 songs during CMJ.

Will probably be in one of those categories with Vampire Weekend hype bands...

is the bowery show cancelled?
who raked in all the haters today... are you yankee fans or something ?

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2009 2:14 PM

i still don't understand why anyone would waste their time reading a post about a band they don't care about and then actually comment, asking "who cares?" i will answer this question for you. the people who care are the fans of the band. i, for example, do care. because i like the band. i enjoy their music. you apparently do not. hence you shouldn't care. but yet you seem to care. its pretty odd behavior.

Yes it is my friend and all the constructive criticism makes us all richer for the experience of caring and sharing. Thats one to grow on.

So... come on down and work for the artificial flower factory. Why fight it!
