Japandroids played CMJ @ Glasslands (pics) & the Bell House
by Andrew Frisciano

The first of Japandroids' two NYC, CMJ-week shows was a Thursday night (10/22) double bill with Real Estate at Glasslands' Death+Taxes party. Singer/guitarist Brian King noted that the show was a year to the week since their first ever NYC appearance, and he held up two fingers to indicate the number of attendees. The packed floor at Glasslands counted many more - undoubtedly a credit to the live show King and drummer David Prowse put on. With a huge full-stack behind him, King strategically set up a floor fan at the foot of the stage to create an ersatz wind tunnel for his flowing locks. The venue was just below sweltering, but it was one of the showmanship touches throughout the set. The band unappologetically sings its pop-punk hooks as two-man gang vocals, cue not lost on the attendees. "Young Heart Spark Fire," among the best of the band's sing-alongable songs, sent the crowd into a frenzy.
Japandroids' played their second CMJ-week show on Friday, October 23rd, a showcase for their label, Polyvinyl, with Cale Parks, Headlights, Owen, Asobi Seksu and James Husband. Their current tour plans include UK shows with A Place to Bury Strangers and a West Coast-centered run with Surfer Blood. All dates and the rest of the pictures below...

The singer seems like a real douche. Why does he have that fan blowing his hair all the way through the set?

It's amazing how I went from loving this band to being utterly annoyed with them in the span of 3 months.

They just played on The Interface. I wanted to be impressed.... but I wasn't. I'd see them for free though I guess. No big whoop. This band seems to define, dare I type, Meh......

I am shocked that everyone finds them bad! I love the new record and the live show (at least at The Bell House) was simply fantastic! I haven't been to a show with that much energy going around since my days back in high school. They have to be the loudest 2 person band I have ever heard, and in a very good way! Of course nobody was moving until the previous band ran from behind the curtains and dove into the crowd which nobody saw coming. After that it just turned into so much fun! Thanks Japandroids, and cant wait till you return to NY!

FUCK THE BELL HOUSE!!! I tried calling the box office a million times bc ticketweb decided it would not grant me tickets even though I got charged three times on my account...and no answer.

The Bell House (aside from the box office issue) is a good venue. Nice staff, and the people booking seem to be doing alot of foreign acts...which is nice.
