Kylie Minogue @ Hammerstein Ballroom (night 1) -pics, video

photos by Chris La Putt

Kylie Minogue

"Hammerstein Ballroom is as packed as I've ever seen it... granted, only my third concert there to date. No opening act, light go down, Kylie descends from the rafters on a giant golden skull to "Light Years." She addresses the audience, "Please! Fasten your seatbelts. My name, is KYLIE. I will be your pursor." Yes, straight from her Showgirl tour, but a dazzling entrance as to be expected from Kylie.

Wrapping up her first North American tour in New York (the first of three shows at Hammerstein), Kylie covered much of her 20 year-long repertoire... "It's In Your Eyes," from Fever, "I Believe in You," from Ultimate Kylie, "Slow," from Body Language, and new songs from X, including "Wow" and "The One." She covered a lot of her old stuff including "Shocked," "Spinning Around," and "What Do I Have To Do," in a medley straight from the Showgirl Tour, as well as "Better The Devil You Know," and a sexy, sultry take on her classic, "The Locomotion."

All in all, a strong effort by Ms. Minogue, but I wish it was really tailored for her U.S. audience. It was a re-hash of her past tours with little unique twists for her U.S. debut. Still, I'm a fan, and she was fabulous. She commanded the room and left everyone wishing for more. " [Brian Burgess]

You have two more chances to catch Kylie at Hammerstein Ballroom (tonight and Tuesday). More pictures from last night (Sunday), below...

Awesome show. Too bad Hammerstein made it hard to see from the back of the floor, but I'm grateful for these photos!

If her whole schtick is being a sex-symbol, she needs to drop a few pounds. Or, BV should have the courtesy of photoshopping some clearance between her thighs.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2009 10:51 AM

Those are some thick legs these days. Remember folks she's like 5'1" tall.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2009 10:52 AM

Set times? How long did she play for??? Did anyone see people selling tickets outside? My friend wants to go tonight...

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2009 11:11 AM

Trannylicious

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2009 11:22 AM

She looks perfect to me. A real woman with a real body.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2009 11:41 AM

She came on around 8:15 & played for exactly 2 hours.

I did see scalpers selling tickets, but I don't know how much they were asking.

Last I heard, tickets were still available for Tuesday night's show.

Can anyone tell me what time doors open?
And how if cameras were not allowed were these pics taken? I am considering sneaking in my small digicam
thanks!

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2009 11:56 AM

11:56 why do you need to take pictures? pictures are for the press only. can't you just look at these photos or photos on any other media website? i guarantee you they will look better than anything you could get anyways.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2009 12:10 PM

Who cares about how fit she is? I thought only gay men listen to Kylie. What do they know about how a woman should look?

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2009 12:15 PM

how tight was the security? if worse comes to worse i stick the camera down my pants...

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2009 12:19 PM

fyi they supposedly had the same tight camera policy for springsteen but I just carried mine in no problem.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2009 12:21 PM

They were pretty strict about the camera thing - mine got taken away but the friend I was with got his in and took a ton of photos. I was in the Mezz and the whole floor was full of LCD screens. I would think you could get one in but be a bit sneaky about it....She was UTTERLY AMAZING.

Posted by April | October 12, 2009 12:26 PM

Doors opened at 7pm (though apparently people were waiting all day... some even camped out). I got there around 7:45 & there was still a line to get in. That positioned us towards the back of the floor.

The show started around 8:15.

There were signs all over prohibiting cameras & video recording, but that didn't stop people from holding their god damned iPhones & camcorders above their heads the whole time & blocking the views of the people all around them. I seemed to have watched more than half of the show through the fucking iPhone screens of the people in front of me as they snapped crappy photo after crappy photo. I honestly wouldn't have minded as much if these iPhones & shit were at least taking good photos, but it's infuriating knowing that all these people were blocking my view just so they could take some shitty camera phone photos that they'll probably delete anyway. (I'm tall, by the way!)

And as if the cameras in front of me weren't bad enough, some dude behind me kept lunging his video camera over my head, constantly hitting me in the process. In hindsight, I regret not going all Bjork on his ass.

(Towards the end of the show I finally started to see my people take a stand against the iPhone people, aggressively getting them to put down their obstructive phones & cameras.)

I know this is nothing new-- it happens at every concert I go to-- but it just seems to be getting worse & worse. Either last night was particular bad or something in me finally snapped. Or both. It's definitely like fighting an uphill battle though.

So sneak your small digicam in if you must, but just know that the people behind you will probably think you're a dick.

Also know that your "small digicam" will not take photos nearly as good as the ones BV have published.

Sorry. Rant over. Have fun tonight.

12:10 because a friend of mine who cannot attend the show for being out of the country has asked me to take pics so he can see them, that's all

12:26 thank you very much for the comment, I have done it before, sneaking in a camera that is, and once inside it is hard for them to surf the crowd to take it away
Going tomorrow, cant wait!

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2009 12:29 PM

I don't think it has anything to do with her being a gay supported artist or not, she is very short and also proves that you can be sexy without being vulgar (Britney) or look like a man on stereoids (Madonna)

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2009 12:31 PM

Hey M, you do make a good point. I also dislike when people do that, especially the short ones who don't know if their pics will come out good for shit.
Thank you for the heads up re:doors time. It is helpful to know that I may have to show there around six to get a good spot on the floor.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2009 1:00 PM

Ahh, well perhaps I can save those "short people" some time: that photo you're trying to take with your iPhone? It looks like shit. Don't bother taking it. In fact, sames goes for the tall people who can actually see the viewfinder.

Hope you have a good time tonight. And I hope you're not watching the show through a tiny viewfinder.

People over at Kylie's site said the line started to get "crazy" around 2pm. (WTF?! Is holding tickets not good enough anymore?! Why must we queue up for everything in this city?!) Hopefully 6pm is sufficient though.

Posted by M | October 12, 2009 1:14 PM

Thank you, 12:36.

Only worthwhile "comment" on this post.

Brian, you may want to brush up on your Kylie before calling yourself a fan and dismissing the "Light Years" opening as being straight out of the "Showgirl" tour (not to mention writing a public review.) Kylie didn't perform "Light Years" on that tour. The skull was featured in the "Like a Drug" number on her most recent "X" tour, but otherwise this was a completely original opening. Good try, though.

10:51am

oh hi fat bitch who wishes she had a body HALF as fuckable as Kylie does

or

oh hi virgin fuck who has a disproportionate, naive and pathetic view on what a sexy women should look like. go jerk yourself off in the bathroom to the mental image of your photoshopped whore.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2009 1:54 PM

umm, the photo taken of kylie's ass was with one of those shtty viewfinder cams. fyi.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2009 2:00 PM

M..I totally agree with you about camera courtesy. I was at U2 and not only had cheap digitals interfering with my sightlines constantly but the pictures they took looked terrible. wankers the lot of them.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2009 2:03 PM

She has not got fat legs at all!!! She's nowhere near fat!

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2009 2:17 PM

I believe people lined up so early because it was the first show in NYC in a long while and it is a small venue
I am sure by Tuesday will be fine, and as of now there are tickets left so it can't be that bad

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2009 2:36 PM

The Hammerstein looks and sounds like a nightmare. Thanking my lucky stars that I saw this spectacular show at the gorgeous (and audience-friendly) Hollywood Bowl.

Posted by moneypenny | October 12, 2009 3:05 PM

Thanks so much for all the news, photos and vid!!! Truly awesome ... I'm still on a Kylie High from Hollywood. Take care ;)

@DEX, SO glad you pointed that out. I had the very same thought reading it. I do so much prefer people to actually have knowledge on what they are writing about. Obviously the show is going to have remnants of past tours because those of us unable to have seen her before liked finally being able to share those moments.

I think she mixed it up quite nicely though I was surprised at the omission of "I Should Be So Lucky" as it was her first U.S. hit. However, being that this was my only gripe (in terms of the show) I came away a very, VERY happy boy. Would be nice if there was no longer any question to her vocal ability because wow. Just... WOW.

My only real complaint of the night? Hammerstein SUCKS if you're under 5'10" and on the floor.

Oh... and 10:51 is a douche.

Did she sing "Locomotion"?

Posted by Regular reader | October 12, 2009 6:07 PM

She did her sultry, burlesque-y rendition of "Locomotion." The same way she did it for the Showgirl Tour.

Posted by M | October 12, 2009 6:20 PM

Fags.

^^
Go back to jerking off, asshole.

BV, can you delete that comment?

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2009 6:41 PM

I have been a fan for 21 years. I have seen her live at least 6 times.

Kylie Minogue, general admission, at the Hammerstein Ballroom. The first thing that went through my head was NIGHTMARE! And from the moment I arrived at the venue, I was RIGHT! Thankfully I was able to say screw you to everyone who waited on the line, arrived at 6:45 pm and walked right into the venue. I was very close to the stage and dead center. I still could not see shit! I did not have arms blocking me. The sound was awful. I did not understand a word Kylie said. There were too many pauses between songs and if Kylie believes that recycling her last 3 tours into one show is a thank you to her fans in the USA as her first tour, she does not know what gracious means. She IGNORED the IMPOSSIBLE PRINCESS album altogether. CONFIDE IN ME does not represent the KYLIE MINOGUE 1994 album. A medley of hits is as boring as sex for 3 minutes and one partner cumming and the other not. And $100 for a ticket? If I had paid for my ticket, I would have demanded a refund straight from Kylie's face when she exited the stage door. But oh yeah, she headed straight to her car, heard 15 fans BEGGING her by screaming PLEASE KYLIE, rolled her eyes, turned around, put on a FAKE SMILE (I finally believe she is a GREAT actress from her performance at the stage door - NOT!), barely said a word, scriblled her name a few times, and ran into the car.

I had the opportunity to see the show again tonight, Monday, and I could go again Tuesday, but staying at home watching tv and easting chinese food sounded like a better night than standning on my feet for 3 hours (get in at 7 leave at 10) to BARELY see a show and BARELY hear it!

Posted by ggg | October 12, 2009 11:43 PM

You said it, ggg - from the picture you just painted of yourself, NIGHTMARE was the first word that came into my head as well.

Posted by hhh | October 13, 2009 2:18 AM

yeah..what ggg said.

Posted by iii | October 13, 2009 1:00 PM

I am just upset about no "Your Disco Needs You"...

Posted by M2 | October 13, 2009 3:33 PM

Ok. So we traveled all the way from Dallas, Texas to NYC to watch the Pop Princess. What we got to see was a spectacular light show through a crowd of 3,000 heads. I managed to get to about 10 feet from the stage in the GA area and STILL could not see Kylie except for the beginning number where she descends from the ceiling. After that, being only 5'3" tall myself, I saw only heads and laser lights shooting from the stage. The sound was great and I am glad I watched her European X tour on DVD before this show or I wouldn't have ever seen any part of it. I don't know if blame goes to her tour manager, tour promoter or Kylie herself for choosing this horrendous venue. I've seen many shows from Madonna to Pet Shop Boys to Bjork to Britney and this was, unfortunately the worst experience I've ever had at a concert. My BF and I spent about 30 minutes pressed and pushed by so many people up front that we finally gave up and moved near the bar and merchandise vendors and "listen" to the show rather than "view" the show which is what we paid for and traveled so far for. I give the show 3 out of 5 stars solely because of this horrible experience. I've always loved Kylie and have bought tons of her CDs, DVDs and vinyl recordings over the years. But, if her team can't get their act together, I am just not going to bother with her shows if she doesn't provide a giant screen for the rest of the fans who are as short as her to see her perform. Sorry, Kylie. I love you but this was just bad and unfair to devoted fans.
