Nada Surf @ Music Hall of Williamsburg (Jack Groetzinger)
NAda Surf

There weren't a ton of shows going on in NYC last night (10/28), relatively speaking, but members/collaborators of most indie rock bands in existence were part of them. Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service, husband of She of She & Him) played with Jay Farrar (Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo) at Webster Hall with John Roderick (The Long Winters) opening.

"Along with all 12 songs from the album, Farrar and Gibbard each sang a song from a different project, before finishing with a pair of covers. Gibbard sang a rootsy version of "Couches in Alleys," a tune he sang on a 2004 album by the Belgian electronic band Styrofoam. Farrar opted for a rousing take on "Voodoo Candle," from his 2001 solo debut, "Sebastopol." And the covers: Farrar handled lead vocals on a countrified rendition of Bob Dylan's "Absolutely Sweet Marie," and the pair closed the show with Gibbard singing lead on a shattering version of Tom Waits' "Old Shoes (and Picture Postcards)."" [listen, damnit]
Full setlist and some videos below. John Roderick plays again tonight at Union Hall.

Meanwhile in Brooklyn, Nada Surf (who played electric instead of acoustic as originally advertised) (and who played as Holly Miranda's backing band at Bowery Ballroom one night earlier) teamed up with Charles Bissell of the Wrens and They Might Be Giants for an indie rock benefit at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Videos below.

Over at BAM it was "The Long Count" featuring the we've-collaborated-with-everyone Dessner twins from the National in partnership with the Breeders-Deal twins who count a member of the Pixies among them. Joining them on stage was Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond, Sufjan Stevens, The Decemberists) and many other indie-friendly musicians, classical and otherwise. Everyone who wasn't playing at one of these shows, was probably in the audience of this one. Check out pics and our review HERE, and our interview with Bryce Dessner HERE, and then check the show out, if you haven't already, on Friday (Mischief Night) or Saturday (Halloween).

Jon Wurster played with Gibbard and Farrar last night also, adding to the supergroupness

TMBG and Nada Surf were really great last night. But what was the deal with the place being half empty?

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2009 4:50 PM

the TMBG/Nada Surf show was a benefit so a lot of companies, politicos, etc bought tix but didn't come so it wasn't that full even tho it sold out.

John Roderick came to MHoW after his Webster Hall show and did a couple of songs with Nada Surf and Charles Bissel!

good explanation, mh, on why NADA/TMBG/BISSELL was so empty - thanks. but what reeeeally surprised me was how the bulk of the people came for TMBG (there was no nada merch but lotsa tmbg's). and wasn't it so sweet to see nada's daniel & ira sitting at base of drumset, smiling, & singing backup to "blizzard of 77" (title?)?

Anyone have a Nada Surf setlist? Couldn't make the show...

There was no Nada Surf merch there bec they didn't have anyone to sell it! There was a table for them but they didn't use it. They aren't in tour mode like TMBG, who just rolled in with their whole set up and had a person lined up.

And I think there were more ppl to see TMBG bec they don't play NYC that often, this was the third night in a row Nada Surf had played in the area, and until a day or two before the show they had been planning to do an acoustic set w/o Daniel, which is a little less of a draw. No mysteries, just circumstances.

--I'm the person who organized the show. The good thing is we raised a lot of money for a good cause and I am very grateful to my old friends in al three bands who came out and played to support the Town Hall. Thank you for coming! I hope you got a cookie or two!

oooooooh, you organized the show, mh? thanks for doing so, and glad it sold out. and i joined in when matthew asked us all to sing "happy birthday".

i'da happily volunteered to work a NADA merch table (with the stipulation i get relieved so i can watch the performance); in future, if you're organizing a benefit & need some manpower, let me know. perhaps i can help.

If you want to buy a car, you will have to get the credit loans. Moreover, my father usually takes a car loan, which is the most firm.
