Matt Pike of High On Fire

Mastodon, Dethklok, Converge and High On Fire are on tour. Last night (10/29) they played the first show of two night stint at Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC. The second is tonight (10/30). It is sold out.
High on Fire were on stage early, REAL early. 6:30, actually. It didnt matter one iota though, because the band barreled through their set, including a new song from their upcoming, unnamed LP. As expected, the new joint smoked, much like "Waste of Tiamat", "Fury Whip", "Rumors of War", and many others from their mostly Death Is This Communion set. The band played the very large room with the same power I've seen them bring to small clubs and basements. Hammerstein must have been 3/4 or more full by the time they finished the set, and I had a sense that the masses felt the same energy.
Converge followed to a mostly apathetic crowd. It was a shame, as Converge were absolutely amazing, and with more energy than I had ever seen from them; it was almost as if they were fueled by negative vibes. Jacob Bannon spent a good portion of the set thanking the crowd for watching them, spending the rest of the set spazzing out to killer tracks like "Eagles Become Vultures", "Concubine", "Effigy", and new faves like "Dark Horse" from Axe To Fall. Bannon must have been quite a handful as a little tot; the tattoed vocalist zipped back and forth across the stage for almost the entirety of their set.
Unfortunately, I skeedaddled shortly after Converge, so I missed both Mastodon and the headliner Dethklok's visual-heavy sets, but pictures (NSFW?) from all four bands (and Dethklok's setlist) are below....

Converge has been together for longer than most of those assholes who were at the show were alive. A lot of them were wearing make up like they were at a Marilyn Manson Halloween party and a bunch of people were sitting in the balcony seats. It was a pathetic crowd.

Just got back from tonight show. Don't get me wrong, I like High on Fire, I've seen en open for other bands like 4 times and headline once but there was a good reason they we're on first! and if you left right after them you wasted your time because the rest of the bill was killer! Converge's performance was so epic and raw and punk as fuck even in the huge ass hammerstein ballroom! I'm pretty sure Axe to Fall is going to get my vote for album of the year! and Mastodon! OH MY GOD! They played Crack The Skye front to back and a few extra songs as an encore! Just for those three bands I would have gotten my money's worth. Dethklok was a lot better then expected! I love the show but thought the live performance would be a bit corny. There are no other words then just plain.. brutal!

the people "sitting in the balcony seats" were forced to, because if you buy a ticket and there are no more "general admission floor tickets" they give you what is called a "balcony ticket", guess where you have to sit? if you stand, your view is blocked by the ceiling of the level above you. dumbass.

hammerstein is no good unless you are in the standing section.

Converge WAS amazing, but it was a an eclectic mix of people in the crowd..not everyone (IE all the annoying little kids there)can appreciate them sadly..PS-why did Mastodon ruin their music with that retarded ass projections attempt? that was god awful.

I left after Mastodon mostly because most of the kids wearing Dethklok T-shirts were total douches. There was this one guy wearing a Dethklok shirt loudly booing Converge and then talking about how terrible they were for a good 10 minutes afterward. It's like, "dude, you're wearing a cartoon band t-shirt." High on Fire was great. Converge was too hardcore for some of the cheesier metalheads there, which is a shame, because they were killer -- Axe to Fall stuff sounded the best. Mastodon played their new, very lame album all the way through, and then reminded us how brutal a live band they can be with a few older songs. Their last 4 songs were worth the price of admission. Dethklok... really, headlining over these 3 bands? That's like Metallica opening for Spinal Tap.

i was in the balcony and i thought converge were fucking great, they played a damn good show and just because the audience couldnt appreciate it doesnt mean they deserved the response they were getting. the vocalist was very energetic and appreciative to be there that night, and i definitely showed them some praise. my friend and i looked like sore thumbs for standing up during mastodon and dethklok's sets, but we didnt give a fuck. we paid for our tickets and we were going to get our moneys worth (which we did) and all four bands didnt disappoint.

glad i didn't go. i have seen mastodon and high on fire a few times apiece at much better venues. converge is decent. and dethklok? yea, right.

Im sorry, but the considerable talent of Converge's guitarists (and the drummer is pretty good too) is wasted by the decision to have vocals that consist solely of AUGH AUGH being barked into the mic. Every song sounds the same when you do that, it destroys their creative effort!
Also, Dethklok is headlining because they can mix socio/political commentary and humor with metal - AND MAKE IT SOUND FANTASTIC. The mighty Mastodon can do metal, of course, but humor? Not really no.
Funny how a fake metal band is outselling the real ones, eh?

Converge are the sickest band on the planet.I was at the Boston show (their hometown)and shocked to see only a handful of people there, most of them yelling "Bring on Dethklok"!What the fuck ?? Mastodon were really good too and I am a huge fan of them also. Missed High on Fire and left before Dethklok came on (FUCK THEM). Axe to Fall is ALUBUM OF THE YEAR !!! "Bring on Converge"!!!

I got coaxed by a nerdy friend who loves Dethklok to roadtrip with him to Milwaukee from Chicago for this show. The Milwaukee crowd was uber lame. They're like behind the times by at least 5 years. High on Fire got a decent reception, hardly anyone responded to Converge, Mastodon was alright, wished they played more old songs though, but Dethklok, it was such a surreal experience. I remember this white trash Chris Jericho lookalike in a tribal bowling shirt shouting "Dethklok is better than all the other bands, fuckers!"

can't believe High on Fire opened this show, I mean, Converge is a decent band, but HoF is SO bad ass, and Mastodon is amazing. All 3 bands should of just gone out on their own, why they are touring with Dethlok is beyone me. Oh well...

converge has to be the worst band i've heard live in a looooong time, it was like being at your old high school's battle of the bands, unreal. of course high on fire destroyed and so did mastodon, who proved that you could be heavy as fuck without screaming into the mic for 45 minutes. i left before dethklok b/c they are dethklok...and alos b/c of all the adult swim nerds

Hey Kah and duhduhduh, just stick to pumping your fist to your creed and dashboard confessional cd's,and stop criticizing REAL bands like Converge. You can't put your lighter in the air and swoon back and forth to everything.

I hate to be the grumpy old man, but if converge was called something else, I might have given them more of a shot. I remember seeing converge a LOT in the mid-late 90's and was disappointed to see that one of the most interesting, smart bands of my youth had turned into a generically-heavy metalcore band. Talented all of them, yes, but gone are the days of mixing screaming with off key singing that sounded like The Promise Ring's singer succumbing to a sleeper hold. Dead, My Unsaid Everything -- songs that combined differentvocal and instrumental styles and gave them depth. Now it's just BLAARGH BLAARGH BLAARGH!!!!
If they were called Stompmaster or Megalonfighter or That Band with Joel McHale on Vocals, it'd be a different story.
All that said, they were still good to give and get beatings to.
Oh, and Brian Roach -- they're touring with Dethklok for the money, the accomodations, the exposure to people who may not know them, and Bret Hind was looking to learn from Dethklok's 2nd guitarist, who was Frank Zappa's guitarist.

I wish the merch guy got his pictures up for the show, because I was the dude who caught the Converge drummer's stick right in my head and bled like a cow. Full crimson mask shit. Then went in and enjoyed the rest of the show. Fucking amazing show, seeing the number of whiners here is a bit sad because every band was stellar, and I don't even like High on Fire normally and I'll still give them props.
Just like what you like, guys. No need to be dicks. Also Converge rules

Great!! i think?

To those who left before Dethklok, it's your loss.
I liked High on Fire. The best I can say of Converge is the lead singer has more energy than your average power plant. Mastodon was good (but their fans were assholes). And Dethklok was the best thing that night.
