Noah and the Whale

Former Noah and the Whale member, and occasional collaborator, Laura Marling, will be in NYC later this month (for CMJ).

Not long after that, the UK's Noah and the Whale be here themselves, playing a three-night run at Mercury Lounge from November 2nd through the 4th. Tickets are on sale now.

One day prior to those three shows (November 1st), The First Days Of Spring, the directorial debut of Noah And The Whale's Charlie Fink, will be screening at Pianos' Upstairs Lounge. Fink will be on hand to conduct a Q&A after the film (one of only two such events). Entry is listed by the band as first come, first served. (Just the film is also at Angels and Kings on Oct. 20th.)

The film shares a name with a Dali painting, and with Noah and the Whale's new album, which came out October 6th on Cherry Tree. Trailers for the film and tour dates (for the band and for the movie) are below...

They put on a good show, definitely. My thought is that at Bowery, Charlie was on a Telecaster most of the night, and it would be cool over three shows if they broke out some of the songs on acoustic.

Stupid Mercury Lounge and their 21+ shows.

Mercury Lounge has, sometimes, one of the best sounds in New York. Its small size has to do with that. Noah and The Whale is one of the finest bands playing today. So we have a good combination here. It would be much better in a theater (also for people under 21), but those places are unfortunately typically dedicated to plays, comedy, classical music, and not rock in the broad sense.

Bowery, and Music Hall of Williamsburg have the potential for good sound, but people in the sound system there love to pump up the kick-drum and the bass. You can imagine how you can ruin the sound of certain kinds of bands by doing that -you are all the time distracted by the salient, predictable and repetitive sound of the kick drum- and my personal experience is that nobody seems to care to much about this, including the members of the band themselves.

Notice that the Chinese know how to do a stimulus package, while no one in power seems to know how to do a stimulus package here in the US.

It is understandable that money can make people disembarrass. But what to do if someone does not have cash? The one way only is to receive the business loans and short term loan.
