World Series kicks off Wed., Jay-Z predicts Yankees take it in 7, singing 'Empire State of Mind'w/ Alicia Keys

Jay-Z

On the World Series, which he'll be kicking off on Wednesday with a performance of "Empire State of Mind":

Jay-Z: I actually predicted the Yankees in six with the Angels, so I think I'm like Jigga the Greek. I'm gonna say, Phillies are a bit tougher than the Angels. I'm gonna take Yankees in seven. Dramatic A-Rod walk-off at the end of the game redeeming him for all the time the papers and the media vilified him. Is that specific enough?"

Yes, Jay-Z will be performing "Empire State of Mind" with Alicia Keys before Game 1 on Wednesday. The video for that song below...

"I made the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee can" How bout that line tomorrow night?

He's saying that as if A-Rod did not deserve to be villafied. Dude's a cheater. Phils in 5

phillies in a sweep.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2009 3:18 PM

The Phillies are not going to win this series, and I'm betting it's going 6 or 7 games

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2009 3:21 PM

One of the luckiest most talentless fucks to make it big by branding himself. This is such a pathetic excuse for a song with lyrics that sound like he wrote them in 3 seconds...How is this a classy, memorable tribute to a city he supposedly loves. Can't wait for this clown's 15 minutes to be over.

Major League Baseball should be ashamed they allow a song that references the Yankees to be played before a game featuring ANOTHER TEAM!!! Favoritism anyone? One more reason to hate the Yankees!

Phillies in 6!!!

"Dramatic A-Rod walk-off at the end of the game redeeming him for all the time the papers and the media vilified him. Is that specific enough?"

i guess the vilified him by showing pictures of him all around the country with the same (muscular) stripper while he was married.

@Anon2:58 - Look at that little racist blog commentor run to type something negative about a guy who could buy and sell his or her stupid ass.

Can't wait to watch Lee get bombed in game 1

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2009 3:31 PM

Seriously, if he thinks HE made the Yankee hat popular, he's a fool. I wear a Yankee hat b/c I've been a fan since I was old enough to understand the game, not b/c some jerk off rapper thinks he's so stylish. What a fucking pompous line.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2009 3:35 PM

Lee get bombed? Guess you didn't see CC against the Phillies last year in the playoffs. The dude almost shat his pants.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2009 3:36 PM

Different year, different team, different everything. Time for the Phillies to step aside and make way for the champs to reclaim their throne.

It's hilarious that people are suggesting the Phillies will sweep the Yanks. They didn't sweep the Rockies or the Dodgers, who are both lesser teams than the Yankees. How do you suppose they are going to sweep the best team in baseball? Not by a longshot.

Baseball!

@Anon4:00 (and also probably Anon2:58) - What exactly are you trying to prove by simply posting a link to other infamous sports-related racial slurs? Please stop.

Will be awesome.

I know someone who fell in love with the Yankees when they were 5, and their father told them that "Yogi Bear" (Berra) played for them. Strange... the impact these events have on us our whole lives...

Posted by california bankruptcy records | October 27, 2009 5:43 PM

fuck the yankees. phillies in 6.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2009 5:50 PM

I'm cheering for NOT-THE-PHILLIES!

GO NOT THE PHILLIES!!!

PS: This doesn't mean I'm cheering for the Yanks.

Posted by Mets fan | October 27, 2009 5:54 PM

Did someone seriously just get angry because a rap lyric is "pompous"??? Did you also get mad and burn your Beatles records because "pompous" John Lennon said The Beatles were more popular than Jesus? You must be that old if you fail to understand how a 30 year old genre of wildly popular music works.

Also to this person: "Major League Baseball should be ashamed they allow a song that references the Yankees to be played before a game featuring ANOTHER TEAM!!!"
I know, right? They should only play that song before a game featuring the Yankees playing themselves!!

PS - YANKEES SUCK
PPS - JAY-Z RULEZ

Black Hat. You are a cretin. It was pointing out that Jimmy the Greek was a questionable fucking guy for Jay-Z to compare himself to, even if he's suddenly fancying himself as a prognosticator.

That's how words work. It's not some knee-jerk "rap is garbage" statement, or a "look at those silly black people" ivory tower rockist posture.

It's saying that Jay-Z (a legend, albeit one that's doing a pretty good Rod Stewart impression of creatively tanking at the end of his career) probably would've thought twice about such a comparison. Now, in his endless verbal press release-mode he's indifferent. There's definitely some friction there.

Ten years ago, if you walked up to Jay, and said "hey, you really remind me of that jack-ass on Monday Night Football that got fired for blanket racist commentary", he probably wouldn't have responded too kindly (hell, even five years, and that was in the wake of garbage like '03 Bonnie & Clyde). Now he could give a shit. After he's finished buying and selling fifty of people like me, why doesn't he then purchase someone who can keep him from alienating people that actually consume current and valid rap music everytime he opens his mouth?

Go Phils

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2009 7:29 PM

@Anon6:35 et al - Ooh...I just got schooled from someone who started their multi-post rant off by referring to Jay Z as a "little monkey." Yeah...I'm the cretin.

Posted by blackhat | October 27, 2009 7:38 PM

Jay-Z is no longer performing at the game due to his Columbus, OH engagement......damn.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2009 9:30 PM

BV, kudos for posting the Yankees' theme song with vocals/lyrics. I hadn't heard this version in decades.

@6:35: IIRC, Jimmy the Greek worked for CBS, not MNF (which used to be on ABC).

"Did someone seriously just get angry because a rap lyric is 'pompous'??? Did you also get mad and burn your Beatles records because 'pompous' John Lennon said The Beatles were more popular than Jesus?"

Lennon made a valid point. Jay-Z's boast is bullshit.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2009 10:14 PM

"15 minutes to be over"...jay has been on the scene since 96 give or take a year.
phillies are a team, the yanks are a collection of big name (steriod using) players.

Posted by eye of the tiger | October 27, 2009 11:43 PM

Also, if I recall correctly what I saw on "The Compleat Beatles" VHS, Lennon made that remark to express how he was flabbergasted by his band's popularity -- the opposite of making a boast.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2009 12:24 AM

Let's go Phils!

Way to spell rules with a Z. This alone tells me mommy and daddy aren't going to let you watch the whole game b/c it will be on past your bedtime. Go to bed douchebag. Don't wake up either.
