MTVu Woodies 2009

Indie darlings Matt & Kim kicked off the show -- which celebrates the year's best music as determined by MTVu's college-centric audience -- with an energetic performance of their breakout single "Lessons Learned." Later, the duo returned to accept their Best Video Woodie award.

"We've had one heck of a year," said Matt Johnson, before counterpart Kim Schifino leapt into the crowd.

Additional performers included veteran alt-rockers Death Cab for Cutie, who rocked the audience with its "New Moon" soundtrack single "Meet Me on the Equinox," as well as Passion Pit, the Dead Weather and Clipse, who were joined onstage by fellow rappers Cam'ron and Rick Ross.

Presenter highlights came from Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz and pop prankserts 3OH!3. Wentz rolled onto the stage holding a red Solo cup, while 3OH!3 gave a nod to Lady Gaga by dressing in her various VMA outfits. Asher Roth, will.i.am, and surprise guest Cyndi Lauper also presented awards. [Billboard]

Cyndi presented an award with Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester who also recently made an appearance at the Weezer (and Matt & Kim) show on Halloween that was sponsored by RXP aka the Matt Pinfield station. Matt was also at the Woodies as was Diplo who was DJing and David Cross, Zooey Deschanel, Janelle Monae, Dave 1 from Chromeo, and Mary Louise Parker. Matt and Kim didn't get naked like they do in their winning video (their second MTV win for that video), but their backup singers did strip down to their underwear.

The Dead Weather also played a show one day before the Woodies in Brooklyn. The Woodies air December 4th at 10pm. More pictures from the event (11/18 at Roseland Ballroom in NYC), below...

I don't think I've heard anything by 3OH!3. What genre are they?

Posted by Anonymous | November 20, 2009 2:01 AM

Yeah I thought Dead Weather would do some vain shit like this. Surprise Surprise. This is why the rest of the countries indie and underground bands laugh at image obsessed NYC half the time.

Strike a pose rock stars.

Well, finally Matt and Kim end up where they've been destined for---the cartoon network known as MTV. They are far from indie darlings and appear to be comfortable on the red carpet. Thank god we can now hand them over to the masses . . .

SMILE. It might do you good.

Posted by Anonymous | November 20, 2009 11:03 AM

Mary Louise Parker seems to be the only saving grace to these whole proceedings.... if everyone else at this thing fell off the face of the earth I really wouldn't miss them...

Posted by Anonymous | November 20, 2009 11:04 AM

I get the feeling none of the people commenting here were actually at the event. It was well-executed, short and sweet, and you saw Roseland in a different light than usual. There are so many shows in NYC that a production/spectacle like this - sort of a lighter version of the VMAs, I guess - was a nice change of pace.

And what's with all of the Jack White hatred? The man's got talent. The Dead Weather is a weird project, for sure, but he's been in so many bands and is a good enough musician/songwriter to expose his more experimental side to a larger audience.

Posted by Vicki | November 20, 2009 11:26 AM

a bullshit event invented for the press wall. all of the above artists, if you didn't know already, have just sold out.

hope the ride was fun - b/c you're shit from now on

Posted by Anonymous | November 20, 2009 11:48 AM

talented or not...I agree with the Jack White / Sigourney Weaver look alike comment. Also, Alison/vv, or whatever she wants to call herself, has the most obnoxious look going these days.

Posted by Vicki | November 20, 2009 11:26 AM

No their not a weird project or experimental. He has a big head rock star attitude. This belongs on top 40 radio for those of you who dont have a critical thinking bone in your body. Reminds me of a lot of bands from the past.

Its nice when underground or independent bands dont care about image, whoring themselves out, and being shallow turds because thats not what other music is suppose to be about at all.
I smile when theres Jesus Lizard posts, or even Dylan doesnt have the bloated rock star swagger as these guys.

P O S E R S AWARDS. This looks like a totally stupid show. I've seen both Passion Pit and Friendly Fires play as opening bands and they suck, I do not like them.

I went to this show!! It was as stated above well executed as well as short and sweet. Trust me no one at the awards took themselves very seriously. It was just another silly award show and no one was under any other impression. I suggest all of the people that are so critical do the same. Also these tickets were completely free for general admission on onsetproductions.com .

Posted by Anonymous | November 21, 2009 5:20 PM

The Dead Weather are the biggest sham this year - shame because each of them have come from legit, quality acts (well the Kills aren't THAT good...), anyway...it's also a shame that Jack's mental quirks have taken a toll on his appearance...shame shame shame

Mary Louise Parker has to be the second oldest person in these pictures (behind Cyndi Lauper) but DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN the best looking person BY FAR. Even Zooey doesn't hold a candle this time. DAAAAAMN.

Posted by Anonymous | November 21, 2009 5:21 PM

The fact that MTV tries to put this off as an "indie" kind of award show for indie music kind of makes me sick. i drove 8 hours across state to see Death Cab For Cutie and it was completely worth it. they play amazing live and never dissapoint me other than the fact they made a song for a twilight saga, and agreed to do anything for MTV, still much respect to them. Passion pitt, and Matt and Kim are a sad excuse for what mtv calls music. matt and kim didn't even perform live. i spent the night wedged next to snotty girls who only came for a song by asher roth, and a girl who wouldn't stop flipping her hair in my face. the tickets were free but i was expecting something other than a dance club. i saw death cab for cutie so i cant complain i guess. worth the 8 hour drive.

I'd rather listen to a David Cross album than read about how much a few rogue hipsters dislike him. The man is legendary. Everything he touches (Mr. Show, Arrested Development, TAEASGA!, etc) is amazing. (With the exception of the gigs that are just gigs).

Also, I brushed shoulders with him a few times at ATP and he didn't seem all that blimpy.

The rest of these 'musicians' are pure shit. i hate chromeo, fall out boy, asher roth, death cab. 3oh3 is the worst excuse for music ever. they should be drawn and quartered for the garbage they create. thing is though, the masses nowadays loves the bullshit, so horrible music is gonna get more and more popular.

Finally saw this on Palladium. Wow. I applaud MTV for thoroughly co-opting such an amorphous "style" as indie. Not a moving performance in the bunch. Hate to trot out the old "you'll never know any of these bands in 10 years" saw, but really. Those goofy kids in the audience make me fear more than ever for this generation. What the hell were they cheering? Being swept up in a marketing maneuver that lays bare the fact that when push comes to shove, the indie kids want to be glitzy and important, too, with their own awards show? Suckers.
