Echo and the Bunnymen @ Mercury Lounge (more by Bao Nguyen)
Echo and the Bunnymen

If you caught Echo and the Bunnymen at Mercury Lounge last month, well, you aren't just lucky for getting to see the UK band in such a small venue, you're lucky for getting to see them at all! They say that the IRS has some rule that bands needed to pay a lot of the money if they already toured here within 30 days. Due to this unforeseen restriction, Echo can no longer make their upcoming tour work and so they say they were forced to cancel all dates including Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC.

One tragically funny outcome of this is that UK band Hatcham Social was supposed to be opening the whole tour. They landed the gig after losing their slot on the Charlatans UK tour that was also cancelled before it ever happened! Maybe they should team up with Free Energy who just suffered a similar setback after The Rakes decided to break up after booking an entire US tour too.

Affected dates below...

CANCELLED ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN DATES
Nov 15 - Masquerade Atlanta, Georgia
Nov 17 - Black Cat Washington, Washington DC
Nov 18 - The State Theatre State College, Pennsylvania
Nov 20 - Kewsick Theatre Glenside, Pennsylvania
Nov 21 - Stage One Fairfield, Connecticut
Nov 22 - Hammerstien Ballroom New York, New York
Nov 23 - House Of Blues Boston, Massachusetts
Nov 25 - Metro Chicago, Illinois

The Oakland date was definitely not affected by the cancellation. Unless our writer lied about going, which I doubt.

"The Oakland date was definitely not affected by the cancellation. Unless our writer lied about going, which I doubt."

Oops. I didn't mean to paste those two October dates into the list of affected dates. It is only dates going forwarded that are canceled. thanks!

jesus, are we really expected to listen to the absolute crap American bands that exist? hearing yesterday that the new regulations are going to kill touring by overseas bands soon. $4000 per visa only good for one tour not for a time period. going to kill the three day trip to NY, LA and SF.
I thought Obama was trying to promote entertainment spending.

They're really cancelling because they ceased to be good after Ocean Rain. Nobody wants to see them. Sad, considering U2 stole their sound (the Edge totally copped Will Sergeant's style) and those born-again creeps are huge. But Mac is a sad cokehead who can only dream of better days gone by.

excuse my cutter friend but you're a complete
idiot that doesn't know what he's talking about.
every line in your post is pure BS,
"nobody wants to see them", "U2 stole their sound","Mac is a cokehead"....
i love it how every little person thinks he knows
what's going on in others life.

6:55 where did you hear about the visa fee's? That sucks if that is the case!

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2009 7:34 PM

Mac IS a cokehead, I partied with him before.

>>They're really cancelling because they ceased to be good after Ocean Rain.<<

Whatever. Evergreen was awesome and I've been listening to the Fountain nonstop. Maybe they aren't MGMT or something?

OOOOOOOHHHH IT JUST GOT REAL

Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2009 1:44 AM

Why are the still selling tickets on TM for the Hammerstein show?

Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2009 8:57 AM

Does someone have a link to some kind of documentation about this Visa change? If that's true, it will totally kill overseas touring. Laugh it up with your snarky quips all you want, but when bureaucracy involves itself in the arts in this country, it usually is for reasons that in no way benefit the arts. Say hello to higher ticket costs and smaller British/Euro bands just bypassing the US all together (as a lot of them already do). I'm sure lawmakers spin it as promoting American music and art, but really they just see it as an easy way to juice some cash out of all of us.

Well said 9:35 this is what I am affraid of. Will have a major impact on touring for overseas acts...

Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2009 11:01 AM

Guess what i'm not doing!

Believing an anonymous post on a blog about 4000 visa fess for bands who want to come here to play. Not until I see evidence at least.

But the rest of you can go ahead and pay attention to the words of an unknown without them even backing it up with documentation.

Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2009 11:02 AM

11:02 several people asked for proof. No one took it at face value. Read again!

Where did you hear...do you have a link were both mentioned!

Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2009 11:18 AM

I was just talking to the kid from Hatcham last night. He was so stoked to see America! Big bummer for them.

"I thought Obama was trying to promote entertainment spending."

O, Obama promoting more spending? Gee what a fucking surprise! but wait, he "created" hundreds of thousands of jobs (nevermind the fact unemployment is now at 10.2% and consumer confidence is at an all time low, with no end in sight whatsoever)

it's going to be a glorious day when us Republicans take back congress next year, followed by the white house in 2012.

Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2009 12:55 PM

i also heard their tour manager quit after the merc show. there's probably lots of reasons these dates aren't happening.

Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2009 1:37 PM

Posted by timbuk2 | March 24, 2010 8:14 PM

Wow, that's a lot of tour cancellations. How are they going to promote their band if they always cancel. Anyway, are they good?
