« Neon Indian adds 3rd show in NYC (which may be their new home), Vega signs to Fool's Gold? (home of Kid Sister) | What's going on Wednesday? »

Tim and I stopped by the Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros show at Music Hall of Williamsburg last time they were in town (8/30). I was especially curious to see what all the fuss was about. The show, much like the two Ed (aka Alex Ebert of Ima Robot) is playing/played in NYC this week, sold out well in advance. I left the show with mixed feelings. It was a while ago, but the thing I remember the most about it - besides the theatrical aspects of it (I mean that in a school play kind of way) (actually if I had to review the show in one word, I would choose "Hair"), was the insane crowd. I barely knew they existed, but the extremely packed Brooklyn venue was going crazy and singing all the words. It was one of those rare shows when the audience honestly demanded an encore - the cheers for the barefooted, hippie/Devendra-Banhart-like frontman to return to the stage were deafening.
They played Bowery Ballroom last night (11/17) and do it again at Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight (11/18). As previously mentioned, openers on the tour and at these shows are the great Local Natives and Fool's Gold (both bands that got plenty of attention this past CMJ). More pictures from the August show below...

They were good, but the openers were great. Local Natives and Fool's Gold both killed it.

"killed it" is officially the lamest, most played out way of describing anything.

heroin kills it.

This band is wack, as mentioned, "Edward Sharpe" is the old singer of this major label shit sandwich:

I also despise the term "killed it" and have mentioned it here before.

"Hair," huh.
Really?
I've seen them a couple times, and I never got "Hair." I like listening to their music - it sounds cool, plus I think it's honest and wierdly relevant. Imagine that, listening to MUSIC...
So it's "Hair," and their passionate (read: mindlessly devoted) fans, and their openers were big with the CMJ Indie Rock guys... Waaait a minute, is there anything even IN this sandwich?

Comparing these guys to the musical 'Hair'??? Are you being serious? For the amount of stuff that gets fluffed on this site, I am surprised at your need to write a piece on these guys that sound like it was written by a third grader. As someone that is a big fan of this blog, I am kind of surprised by the way you have chose to cover these guys. Commend you for you honest opinion, but this review of this band is awful.

@6:16, saying "officially" before a statement is the lamest, most played out way of introducing an argument

at first i was a bit offended by the high school play comparison but I thought about it for a while and although I usually describe it as some kind of revival I'll accept the theatrical nature of the show. But let's bump it up to broadway level at least. BV is definitely right on about the crowd though... I was shocked, surprised and smiling the whole time at the spectacle and energy of the crowd back in august. It was definitely a love fest, these bowery and music hall shows were no differnet. It's fun and wild, i love it.

I saw the show on the 18th. All three bands cooked but as I say on my BLOG, Local Natives were my favorite. As for Edward Sharpe and the MZ's, Alex is a great front man but I especially loved Jade.
