Gil Scott-Heron now on XL (2010 album), was @ Bowery Ballroom to see labelmates/remixers? The xx (now a trio)

xx

When I got to the xx show at Bowery Ballroom last night (11/11), I was told by someone reliable that Gil Scott-Heron was planning on joining the headlining UK band on stage for some songs - both with them and on his own for a few. At first I thought that was completely random. Then I realized that the xx's label XL Recordings recently announced that they signed Gil. They'll be releasing "I'm New Here", his first album since 1994's "Spirits", on Jan. 11, 2010. And according to jamespenycate, "The XX are remixing the entire Gil Scott Heron album". You can listen to four song clips, and watch video of Gil in the studio, at imnewhere.net.

Ends up Gil didn't join The xx on stage, though I saw him there after the show and apparently he did sound check with them (it's unclear why the change of plan). Ends up Baria Quresh didn't join The xx on stage either. The band performed as a trio and XL confirms that Baria's hiatus is permanent.

Fellow UK musician Jon Hopkins opened the show with a set of solo electro that had him pushing all kinds of buttons on stage to the delight of those that bothered to check him out. "Hopkins's third album, Insides, was released by Just Music in conjunction with Domino Records on May 5, 2009."

I'm in love the xx album, so seeing them live can't be that bad, which it wasn't, but it's nowhere near as good as the album. The young band will hopefully improve their show over time. The annoying crowd (people were talking through the performance on every side of me... and there was at least one person who answered her cell phone) generally appreciated it though - there was lots of clapping especially for favorites like "Basic Space". The band said it was good to be back in NYC which they said was like their second home. It's true. They played a bunch of shows here before CMJ and then a bunch more during CMJ, and they'll be back again in December with Friendly Fires. Tickets are still on sale for that Webster Hall show.

It used to only be the CMJ shows that dickheads would talk loudly through, but the past decade or so it seems like pretty much any band with a little bit of buzz attracts douchebags *solely* interested in being there for bragging rights. Or maybe it's because it's one of the only places in Manhattan they can get good reception on their iphones .

They look like Glasvegas rejects... uh?

duh, this band is complete garbage. the only d-bags that would show up to this are pitchfork staff and the people that blindly follow pitchfork.

The XX are a total snoozefest.
Some of the weakest, most amateur junior high school girl/boy vocals I've ever heard.

Saw Gil Scott-Heron at BB King's a couple of weeks ago. It was very good although kind of short. Glad to see that he is getting out there and broadening his audience.

Good on XL.

The xx (still good on record) have turned into a live powerhouse ever since they added Green Squiggly Line to their act. Dude tears it up.

that's a win for 4:06.

I saw The XX last night, and I seriously don't get it… Sure, their album is somehow interesting but they certainly don’t deserve all the attention they’re getting. And they seriously need to work on their live performances too, it was almost painful to watch/hear.

nah, this band is hyped fo sho. seems like a boring live show. too many sheep going to the cmj shows

Posted by Anonymous | November 12, 2009 5:07 PM

I can't get into this album. No hooks, boring songs, weak production. a promising demo, but all this hype leaves me baffled.

I thought the show last night was better than expected. I like the album, agree there is an unfair amount of hype, but was worried the songs would be awful live. Not the case in my opinion. The crowd was lame, but they sounded good, and the DJ did some cool things. Overall not a bad show given thier youth and that the only have a single record out.

This band is so fly-by-night that they didn't even bother giving themselves a name, just two letters.

They are a Skiffle band right?

"another perez hilton'd photo. what gives BV?"

Perez Hilton'd? Green squigglies are and always have been pure BV.

This band is now officially too white.

I think they have something. Not fully developed yet but they'll be really good in a couple of years.

Posted by Richie | November 12, 2009 8:45 PM

"they'll be really good in a couple of years."

when will people learn that ridiculously over hyped bands are never around in "a couple of years"

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2009 1:24 AM

BV was Perez Hilton before Perez Hilton was Perez Hilton

"They are a Skiffle band right?"

Hahaha, yea I hear the tall one plays a mean tea chest bass.

good record. forgettable show.

Posted by myatomicpolygon | November 13, 2009 11:02 AM

Their show at Mercury Lounge at the beginning of CMJ was excellent and the crowd was respectful. Maybe the band got tired after playing all those CMJ shows and started playing less good? Also, another theory as to why Baria Quresh is on haitus--she couldn't keep up with her bandmates with her instruments. She was always a little off.

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2009 11:30 AM

there are way more overhyped bands than these guys. they got a better pitchfork score than cymbals eat guitars, but CEG gets 20x the coverage they do. i agree that their sound isn't fully developed yet, but anyone who can't hear their hooks is tone deaf. they have much more potential than the sea of todd p approved cute girl three chord "lo-fi" bullshit

I saw a documentary on Gil Scott-Heron last week on the BBC. I felt really ignorant and wondered why I'd not paid more attention to his work. The Revolution Will Not Be Televised is sheer genius. He is a wordsmith of Shakespearean insight in my view. Awesome.
