Julian Casablancas played the Downtown Palace Theater in LA (pics), playing NYC shows in January
photos by Darren Kim

"In his stage show, which [began] Friday at the Downtown Palace Theater in Los Angeles -- a New York residency is planned for January -- this song will be represented by a multimedia landscape of videos and sets depicting the neighborhood, which Mr. Casablancas will stroll through. It is over the top by design -- he compared it to the "Radio City Christmas Spectacular" or a Disney show -- so he can charge higher ticket prices, he said, to offset a series of free concerts he hopes to do." [NY Times]Julian played his first LA residency show on Friday (11/6).
"The relatively short set was broken up with an intermission, which the band used for a costume change, slipping into some '70s-style white suits and unveiling an all-white set makeover that could have been ripped from "American Bandstand." The visuals impressed, more so because the giant sliding screens allowed for the underground water shots, cartoon-ish cityscapes and kaleidoscope-like prisms that mirrored Casablancas' intricately weird arrangements. No wonder such a short performance carries a relatively high admission price, with tickets starting at $35." [LA Times]More pictures from the show below...

$35! Get off your high horse.
Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2009 3:42 PM
Yeah I'm sure the $35 price is meant to offset the cost of upcoming free shows. Probably just meant to offset the cost of cheeseburgers fatty

Please don't ever compare this douche to Pete D... Speaking of Pete, what are the chances you think he will play here in the states? Libertines reunion would be nice...
Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2009 4:43 PM
I seriously don't think Pete D would be issued a work visa over here.

Has anyone heard anything about the Ramones reunion?
Posted by aaanonymous | November 9, 2009 6:42 PM
you mean the one that's happening thirty years ago when half of them weren't dead?
Posted by 6:42 | November 9, 2009 7:10 PM
No one is saying Julian isn't talented but he sounds like a moron in most of his interviews.
I think there was a Strokes reunion in the balcony of the theater.
Can't wait for the NY residency. He can tell everyone why he moved to LA and why he hates Brooklyn.
Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2009 8:02 PM
Shannen Doherty cleaned up?
Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2009 8:26 PM

TRUST FUND BABY!!! Life's a fucking bitch right julian?
Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2009 9:07 PM
anons/douchebags 8:02 and 9:03 he's renting a place in LA and is coming back home to new york in a couple weeks. he didn't move there. and he never said he hated brooklyn. he said he doesn't want to move there even though that's where most of the music is right now. in fact, he said worst things about manhattan while lamenting how most of it has changed drastically in the last ten years. get your facts straight blowhards.
Posted by to awful anon. hipsters | November 9, 2009 9:47 PM
fuck all of you hipster douchebags.
Posted by Hanan | November 9, 2009 9:53 PM
"is that JP on guitar?"
Yup.
Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2009 10:24 PM
9:47-too bad he's coming back. it would have been just a tad nicer in NY with one less talentless, hipster, douchebag, trustfund baby.
Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2009 10:45 PM
i love all the julian haters. dude is unbelievably talented and dedicated to making music (other than 1 or 2 songs on FIOE, no filler). the strokes never tried to make it huge despite RCA trying to make them (unlike the White Stripes who tried with much more professional management and pretty much succeeded in becoming huge). Come back to NY Julian, NY loves you.
Posted by bp | November 9, 2009 11:04 PM
>>the strokes never tried to make it huge
Clearly the dumbest thing ever written...The Strokes wanted and seeked out all the attention they craved...the reason middle America didn't respond is because they can't relate to spoiled brats who reek of thinking they are better than everyone else.
Julian in this new press blitz has revealed himself to be even a bigger douche than his 2001 peak
BTW...it's 2010 soon, better music is being made by more deserving talents
Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2009 11:36 PM
strokes are so overrated and i wouldn't be surprised if some strings were pulled to get them where they got to.
Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2009 11:40 PM
dude is unbelievably talented-11:04
what are you on? he has absolutly no voice. the strokes wanted all the attention they could get. all they did was put out shitty music and get drunk all the time. all wanted to be rockstars. the only good bands that came out from early 2000's garage rock was the white stripes and the hives.
Posted by Anonymous | November 9, 2009 11:59 PM
>>strokes are so overrated and i wouldn't be surprised if some strings were pulled to get them where they got to.
NO SHIT
Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2009 12:16 AM
didn't we stop doing this shit in like 2005? they made a good album... get over it.
Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2009 12:17 AM
11:59 - white stripes & the hives? You must love gimmick rock - what about the Donnas and Slipknot - more 2000s era acts with terrible music and an easy to spot gimmick
I guess slipknot ain't garage rock though...

Posted by gov. bobby jindal | November 10, 2009 1:43 AM
he made it sounds in p4k interview like stage show was incredible hence the high ticket price doesnt look like it, $15 extra for some backdrops and a few lights, NEXT!
Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2009 2:23 AM
Wow...Anyone who says he cant make music or that hes a douche, i'll belive you as soon as you make better music than he has. If everything gets handed to him and the strokes then why in the fuck are they even doing all of this. Wouldent you just lay around at home insted of working on albums and touring. You ppl are so narrow minded and ignorant, dont you nottice that julian is making very unique music. most if not all of these new bands all sound the same no soul no passion and they're voices sound exactily alike as well. Anyway... keep bitchin to yourself about julian cuz fact of the matter is that his music is damn well made and his shows are packed and his album is selling.
Posted by Troywilliams | November 10, 2009 5:28 AM
he doesn't write a lot of songs. he wrote maybe 3 or 4 real songs for First Impressions, and that's it for his output since 2003. he was young & hot & snotty and that's what he had to express. so now he'd be better off joining a strokes cover band rather than attempt to establish himself solo on the basis of subtlety and craft he doesn't have.

He also made one of the most perfect debut albums ever. The guy's got the goods. Get over it.
Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2009 11:52 AM
His record is awesome. Period.
Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2009 12:23 PM
The guy can write a good melody. I don't hear a lot of good ones these days, and Julian has plenty.
Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2009 12:24 PM
LEAVE JULIAN ALONE!!!
Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2009 12:28 PM
ANYONE KNOW WHO IS IN JULIAN'S BAND? ARE THEY FROM OTHER BANDS?

Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2009 1:44 PM

Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2009 2:08 PM
"anyone thinks that this douche is talented needs to get their fucking head examined."
i've never been a strokes fanboy or anything but this dude is insanely talented. wrote the best pop/rock songs of the decade.
Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2009 2:25 PM
i bet the strokes are done for good
Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2009 3:57 PM
i sure hope they are
Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2009 5:29 PM
you people are pathetic , have nothing to show for yourselves so whadda ya do? hating on this guy cuz he took indie music to the mainstream. Go back to your apartment and snack on stale crackers and keep living your miserable lives.
Posted by Anonymous | November 10, 2009 9:44 PM
anyone that went to the show would testify that julian is incredibly talented and the ticket price was not inflated.
Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2009 2:52 AM
people who say they hate the strokes , they secretly like them but can't get themselves to admit it.
Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2009 8:55 AM
this show was overpriced by $20
Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2009 10:01 AM
why didnt they allow photos of the second half of the show with the fancy stage setup? bad publicity move
Posted by Anonymous | November 11, 2009 10:11 AM
People are so pathetic. All these comments hating on Julian, fine, everyone has their own opinion, but jeez focus on the fucking music.
I personally love his new album AND The Strokes, even FIOE. I guess that's just my own personal opinion.
So all you stuck up people, go get laid. Maybe then you'll get the sticks out your asses.
Posted by shirey castro | November 13, 2009 9:57 PM
Some of the comments here are very harsh. Julian, I don't think, has permanently moved to LA. He'll be back in NY. If he doesn't like Brooklyn, well that's unfortunate but then again, he called Yankee fans some pretty harsh names as well..I think he said Yankee fans are idiots or dickheads......
He is a very talented guy who should think before he speaks.
